Soccer team formed by popular demand I | all began in the fall of ' 75 when en- thusiastic seniors and freshmen, Tom Cassel, Don Woodrum, Brendan Cullen, Tim Rasche, and Mike Rohleder, made out a peti- tion to form a soccer team. They got over a hundred signatures during lunch breaks. The excitement soon died down when a modera- tor was not to be found. But, in January, Bro. Carroll Posey said he would get up a soccer team and enter them in the Louisville spring tourney. To everyone ' s surprise, 65 to 70 students signed up to play. Three weeks before the tournament, a meeting was held and Bishop David had its first soccer team. After only four days of teaching and training. Brother Carroll chose his team and they were to play St. X. Everyone was nervous as the eleven men took to the playing field at our first game. In the second quarter, St. X scored. Going into the third period. Bishop David showed its pride and tied it 1-1 with a goal by Steve Brady. Then the Falcons scored again with a 40-ft. shot by Brendan Cullen, to win the game. It was a surprise to everyone. The Falcons opened the city tournament against DeSales who had beaten them in a previous game. This was the most exciting game because DeSales was rated second in the state behind Trinity. The half-time score was 0-0. Our defense played well. Through- out the second half, DeSales ' experience and skill began to show, but the Falcons held off the DeSales strike until 37 seconds to go in the game. DeSales scored in the confusion of Bishop David ' s substitutions. The Falcons nearly tied it at the end with a spectacular save by Don Woodrum and a 60-ft. despera- tion shot by Brendan Cullen. Though the season was short because of the late start, and there were only two ex- perienced players on the team, Philip and Brendan Cullen, the soccer team had a lot to be proud of. Golfers post winning season I he golf team posted a winning record of 17-6 last season. Led by Coach Denny Nash, the golfers did ex- ceedingly better than last year. Jerry Haywood, top man, finished the yeai with a 39 average and quali- fied for the regional golf tournament. He lost by 5 strokes to place third in that tournament. Junior, Barry Fallon, was close behind Haywood with a 39 average for the season. Chris Corbett and Dale Jolly, finished with a 41 and 43 respectively. Other members of the golf team were: Steve Goetz, Rick Fryer, David Martincic, and Denny ( That ' s My Boy! ) Nash. KEGLER KORNER |he mixed Angela Menci-Bishop David bowling league contained 12 five-member teams for a total of 60 bowlers from the two schools. The league ran from October to April at Rockford Lanes on Wednesdays at 3:1 5 p.m. Fust place team members were: Joni Bowman, Kevin Brown, Bill Craycroft, Tina Strange, and Tom Strange. High game hon- ors went to Mike Milby in the men ' s bracket and high series award in the men ' s went to James Hawkins. The most improved bowler award in the same division went to Robbie Sears. Few students were kept aware of the bowling action at Rockford Lanes of Wednesdays because the league was not very well publicized. But they had a good time and anyway, it was a good way to spend a GOLF Wednesday afternoon. ' TR 59
