It is a very demand- ing test of speed and physical endurance. The race consists of a two-mile course over many types of terrain; from rocky paths to steep hills. In cross country there are no time outs and no substitutions. Once the gun goes off, it ' s mind versus body until the finish line. Unlike most sports, cross country meets are not cancelled because of rain or snow. They are cancelled only when there is lightning. The 1975 cross country season was one of the best in recent years. The team, coached by Bill Young finished above the .500 mark with a regular season record of 9-7. The team also did well in the Covington Catholic Invitational and Stuart Invitational. However, the season ended in disappoint- ment as Bishop David placed 4th in the regional meet due to injury and illness of the No. 3 and 4 runners. On October 3, 1975, the cross country team held its first home meet against Butler and won by a score of 19 to 40. Then carl I another home victory on October 15th whll P.R.P. fell 19 to 41 while the entire footbll team helped cheer the Falcons on to victotl I Gerard Senn, qualifying his third year 111 the AAA state championship, finished 15th place. Goal: break 500 In the first clash with Catholic rival, De- Sales, the Falcons fell in a close game 2-1. After more close-game losses to Manual, Butler, St. X, Providence, and J- Town, but crushing wins over Atherton and Fairdale, the Falcons had an 8-8 record with a tough game ahead with their district nemesis, P. R.P. for the first match up with them of the season. The team suffered a disappoint- ing loss— 1 2-6. They lost the next game to a powerful Trinity club 11-1, setting their record back to 8 and 10. They beat Western but lost to Shawnee and Butler giving them a 9-12 rec- ord. But the Falcons, undiscouraged, set their goal at breaking 500 and winning the - - upcoming district playoffs. The Falcons beat Stuart in a double- header and ensuing victories over Iroquois, Ballard, Ahrens, Central, and Thos. Jeffer- son, with only one loss to Valley, gave the team a more impressive record of 17-13. The team went to the city finals and lost a heartbreaker to rival, DeSales. A rained-out game at Jeffersonville and a victory over Lanesville, Indiana, brought their record to 18-13 while the Falcon team awaited the District draw. The draw for the first round paired the team with area rival, P. R.P., who had beaten the Falcons earlier in the season. The team lost that first game, but the team gained experience as they finished the season with a winning record. L-.T-TT-rv.-rri TRACK TIMES | he track season was one in which bad- ly needed experience was gained. The team, composed predominantly of freshmen and sophomores, lost many meets because of lack of experienced participants in such events as the pole vault and low hurdles. The most exciting and disappointing meet was the Bullitt Central Invitational. The highlight came when Jim Zahn broke the school record for the high jump to win the event in very close competition. This was not enough, however, as the team fell to 4th place in a meet where they had taken run- ner-up honors the year before.
