As evidenced by the empty stands, Atherton fans were reluctant to travel to the Doss gym to play the Falcons. In a flurry of the action, center, Kevin Alexander, puts in a jumper from in under. Missed foul shots were part of the downfall of the attack against a fired-up Doss team. Bob Norris anxiously awaits the outcome of this free throw attempt. fc«jr VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM-1ST ROW: F. Sportsmanship award is consolation for District loss Finally the 22nd District playoffs came around and the team was hoping to repeat as District champs. But with little emphasis on the importance of the game to the school at the pep rally, the team did not get fired up enough. The Falcons were pitted against P. R.P. again and fell short 4 points. As the final buzzer sounded for season, the score- board read, P.R.P.-38, B.D.-34. There was consolation in the fact that Bishop David was elected to receive the sportsmanship award for the tournament for the second straight year. r FOR THE RECORD 10 wins 14 losses B.D. Fledgling roundballers have mixed seasons |he JV basketball team slipped in a dismal record of 9-13. The record, however, was not as bad as at times it seemed for the team had many exciting moments. Most of the games were lost by only a few points. As the year progressed. Coach Willie Jackson ' s team showed much improvement. It was led by juniors, Ted Willett, Jim Zahn, and Tom Payne. The sophomore standouts were Greg Alvey, Tom Spencer and Mike Ryan. Expectations of a great basketball record for the frosh were held at the beginning of the season, but after losing the season open- er to archrival, St. X, the team began what appeared to be a long season. A winning surge at the end of the year established a winning record of 10-8. Things looked dim for the young Falcon team after losing 5 of their first 8 games which mcluded losses to St. X, DeSales, and Trin ty, traditional Catholic school rivals. Then, taking a 4-6 record into the game with P.R.P., they began rolling, winning their last 6 out of 8 games and dropp ing only 2 hard- fought battles against DeSales and St. X. They were sparked by these wins up to the final game - their defeat of Shawnee. O FAR RIGHT: JVer, Greg Alvey. puts one up over the head of a St. X defen- der. RIGHT: Tom Payne goes in for a crip shot against Trinity in a hard-fought season opener. 50 J.V. BASKETBALL
