Pkys. Bd. builds bodies $y i. Dan Leasor, head of the P.E. de- partment, received some help in teaching in the form of a student teacher named Kenny King. Mr. King liked it so well that he stayed on as a part time teacher after his tour of duty was up as a student teacher. Since all of the freshmen and sophomores take at least one semester of P.E. and Health, the extra help was welcomed. Advanced P.E. was also offered this year to the juniors and seniors and it proved to be a very popular elective. It seemed the new rage this year was soccer, especially in the fall of the year when one could look out the window on a crisp, clear day and see the strange new game being played on the football field. As spring rolled around and even during those unusually warm days in February, a teacher upon coming to school would envy Mr. Willie Jackson, P.E. teacher, running around in the fresh air all day enjoying the weather. How little they remembered those nasty days in the winter when the gym was packed with two P.E. classes doing various activities at one time and typical gymnasium ventilation was the order of the day. Business es tistiel I here were no new courses offered this year in the business department but the typewriters got quite a workout again. The freshmen were the lucky ones who got to test their skill and stamina at the keyboard. Somehow they just did not make the keys large enough for a quarterback ' s fingers. Mr. Michael Egan, however, tried to encourage them and keep the typewriters in good re- pair. The juniors took a business math course from Mr. Denny Nash and the seniors were tutored by the same business expert in busi- ness law. The seniors also learned some eco- nomics from Bro. Roland and accounting from Mr. Michael Egan, who was also the head of the business department. i t MR. MICHAEL EGAN: Algebra I; Accounting; Typing I; J. A. Moderator; Business Dept. Head. , MR. WILLIE JACKSON: P.E. Health I, II; J.V. Basketball Coach. MR. DENNY NASH: Business Math, Business Law; Varsity Football Head Coach; Golf Coach. 28 P.E. -BUSINESS

Miss Diane Vance helps David Lally and Frank Hayden with a test for salt content in boiling water in the chemistry lab. One of the most interesting courses of the math department was the junior statistics course taught by Mr. Bill Young according to some juniors. It was a difficult course but the students seemed to really learn a lot. AN of the freshmen took algebra or ele- mentary algebra under the guidance of Mr. Larry Clem and Mr. Michael Egan. The soph- omores either took a second dose of algebra or a geometry course from Fr. Caskey. The juniors were involved in either the statistics course or an elective course in drafting. Drafting was also offered to se- niors. If one could ever take a peek into the drafting room one could see the students busily bending over the boards, drawing their blueprints under the watchful eye of Mr. Bill Young. Tft MR. BILL YOUNG: Algebra I; Prob Statistics; Drafting; Cross Country Track Coach; B-Birds Basketball Coach. MR. LARRY CLEM: Algebra I. II; Photography Club Moderator; Liturgy Team Chairman. 27 SCIENCE

Spectel pto$t$m meets special needs Teaching the basics of TV camera work, Mr. Tim Hyland is perched atop the field house on field day. With him are Warren Carley, Jim Hawkins, and John Tucker, keeping watchful eyes through the viewfinder. f oom 212 was the home base of a special educational program headed by Mr. Tim Hyland. It consisted of 22 freshmen and 11 sophomores whose learning difficulties and need for special help in certain basics prompted the initiation of the program. The students took courses in English, math, science, history, and reading in Room 212 and 206, but went to the gym for P.E. and other classrooms for Health and religion. The freshmen also took art. The freshmen took English from Miss Charlotte M iller, reading from Mr. Tom McAnally, and math and science from Mr. Tim Hyland. A typing course was added to their English course on a part time basis. The sophomores took math, science and English from Mr. Hyland; reading and world history from Mr. Tom McAnally and Mr. Leo Tierney. A special crew was formed by Mr. Tim Hyland to run the video tape cam- era and recorder. These students learned the basics of camera work and recorded events for the school, such as, football games, bas- ketball games, and field day activities. The philosophy of this program was to give special help to these students but at the same time for them to cover the same courses other students in their grade level had, only in a different way. Also, Mr. Hy- land ' s constant supervision and help was guidance for them. The faculty who worked in the program sometimes considered it a family type atmosphere where students were challenged to do their very best, but given the time and individual help they needed, and teachers, team teaching together, satis- fied student needs. Mr. Hyland ' s science classes put theory to practice one day when they cleaned up the school grounds after studying a unit on cleaning up the environ- ment.
