Most Reverend Timothy Manning, D.D. Dear Graduates: In Rome for the feast of St. Agnes in the basilica named in her honor, two gaily-decked lambs are brought in elaborate procession to be blessed on the altar at the conclusion of High Mass. They are solemnly blessed and then brought to the Holy Father for his personal blessing. Subseqeuntly, they are cared for in the garden of some convent. When their wool is shorn, it is woven into a narrow circular band with two pendants. This is called the Pallium. These pallia are then placed in a casket at the tomb of St. Peter. When an Archbishop is elevated to an archdiocesan see, the Holy Father sends a Pallium to him which is to be worn over his shoulders as a sign of his jurisdiction on the occasion of solemn ceremonies. The Pallium, therefore, represents graphically the Good Shepherd carrying around His shoulders the lamb that symbolizes His tender care for His flock, especially the little ones thereof. It is eminently appropriate, therefore, that this issue of the school annual edited under the Pallium should adopt for its theme the relationship between the little ones of the flock and the Good Shepherd, the Light of the World. May each and every one of the pupils at Bishop Conaty Memorial High School be ever worthy of the affection and tender care of the Master Whom they pledge to serve. Very sincerely yours, 5 yxkg LU F k Q ct Ave :Q--1-' L-'VN S vxL7X TIMOTHY MANNING Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles Vicar General

This Is a concept that stretches out far beyond the sphere of human vision, and which encompasses the supematural that is equally real and so much a part of our every day lives. Christ, the Guiding Light of the World, Christ, the Sustaining Llght of the World, Christ the Sanctlfying Light of the World, should ever be our Beacon Light. Most Reverend Alden Bell, D.D. Dear Students of the Class of 1958: To know that on this whirling bit of burnt-out Stardust that we call this earth you have a mission from Almighty God and for Him, which no one else in the uni- verse can discharge, is a challenge to the best that is in you. A few short years ago you were absolutely nothing. Now you throb with life that you may reflect God among men. You, who by many are regarded as completely negligible in importance, are on this earth by God's command, and thanks to His continued action, that you might show forth some shadow of Omnipotence and make manifest in your own particular way that goodness which is the very essence of God. What a mission is yours! May God bring you to its understanding and to its fulfillment. Sincerely in Christ. 'ff l 'r . , , ,. .41 - AI.DEN j.
