He who follows Me does not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. - john 8:12 The source of shadow is light, and on the intensity of the light depends the strength of the shadow We, the followers of Christ, dwell in the light of His divinity and draw our strength from His infinite power and radiance. And as we bring ourselves nearer to Christ the Light, we more perfectly mirror His image to others. Our years at Conaty have not only enlightened our intellects, but have also revealed that the only light which can fully illuminate our 1ife's purpose and destiny is Christ, the Light of the World. This Is a concept that stretches out far beyond the sphere of human vision, and which encompasses the supematural that is equally real and so much a part of our every day lives. Christ, the Guiding Light of the World, Christ, the Sustaining Llght of the World, Christ the Sanctlfying Light of the World, should ever be our Beacon Light. Praying for you all, the blessings and protection of Our Lady, I am Faithfully yours in Christ, I ARCH B ISH OP F Los Aangeles S Most Reverend Timothy Manning, D.D. Dear Graduates: In Rome for the feast of St. Agnes in the basilica named in her honor, two gaily-decked lambs are brought in elaborate procession to be blessed on the altar at the conclusion of High Mass. They are solemnly blessed and then brought to the Holy Father for his personal blessing. Subseqeuntly, they are cared for in the garden of some convent. When their wool is shorn, it is woven into a narrow circular band with two pendants. This is called the Pallium. These pallia are then placed in a casket at the tomb of St. Peter. When an Archbishop is elevated to an archdiocesan see, the Holy Father sends a Pallium to him which is to be worn over his shoulders as a sign of his jurisdiction on the occasion of solemn ceremonies. The Pallium, therefore, represents graphically the Good Shepherd carrying around His shoulders the lamb that symbolizes His tender care for His flock, especially the little ones thereof. It is eminently appropriate, therefore, that this issue of the school annual edited under the Pallium should adopt for its theme the relationship between the little ones of the flock and the Good Shepherd, the Light of the World. May each and every one of the pupils at Bishop Conaty Memorial High School be ever worthy of the affection and tender care of the Master Whom they pledge to serve. Very sincerely yours, 5 yxkg LU F k Q ct Ave :Q--1-' L-'VN S vxL7X TIMOTHY MANNING Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles Vicar General Most Reverend Alden Bell, D.D. Dear Students of the Class of 1958: To know that on this whirling bit of burnt-out Stardust that we call this earth you have a mission from Almighty God and for Him, which no one else in the uni- verse can discharge, is a challenge to the best that is in you. A few short years ago you were absolutely nothing. Now you throb with life that you may reflect God among men. You, who by many are regarded as completely negligible in importance, are on this earth by God's command, and thanks to His continued action, that you might show forth some shadow of Omnipotence and make manifest in your own particular way that goodness which is the very essence of God. What a mission is yours! May God bring you to its understanding and to its fulfillment. Sincerely in Christ. 'ff l 'r . , , ,. .41 - AI.DEN j. We, the Highlander class of 1958, in gratitude ro Father Weyer, dedicate our Palliumto him and pray that the lightyof.God's grace may be cast upon his priestly life. EI II E EI I In the shadow of His hand Symbolizing the powers of the priest, the benediction blessing falls on over 1,100 girls daily. Maintaining positions as principal and vice-principal, Father john Reilly and Father Joseph Sartoris serve as Conaty's head administrators. Providing material counsel and spiritual guidance, they lose no opportunity to advise and direct their students. Instructing classes in apologetics and marriage, Father Reilly and Father Sartoris turn their teachings toward the spiritual and mental development of every soul placed in their care. He hath protected me and hath made me as a chosen arrow. Isaias 49:2 IO Reverend John Reilly Principal My dear Seniors: As the shadows of each day fall, the world looks forward to the morning and its brightness. You are about to see the last shadows fall in the corridors of the school of your youth. The brightness of tomorrow always de- pends on the personal outlook of each individual. You will cast many shadows, but the important matter is how and where you will shadow yourselves. The world today looks forward to the good that people can do. The shadow of goodness is indeed a desirable effect for all of us. The Faculty of Bishop Conaty High School here attempted to lead you to the things which give of good- ness. It is now your responsibility to take this goodness and through your actions shadow to the world the good which is in you. The Church of which you share is the principal source of goodness because of its Divine founda- tion by Christ. It is then the source of all goodness. There is nothing more effective in the society of men than a good woman. A woman who is for all the ful- fillment of God's wish and desire constitutes the concrete good in the world. Wtmnianhood is by its nature in God's desire the instrument for goodness. Each of you shares in this sacred heritage and as Christian women, the world will be better for your influence. The Shadow of Our Lady in this year of anniversary is one which we hope and pray will constantly dominate your lives. With Christ as the Image and His Blessed Mother as the Mirror, no woman can abandon the influence of such a striking shadow. God bless you, Q E gf , Father Joseph Sartoris, vice-principal , leaves no room for a shadow of doubt when teaching his senior apologetics and marriage classes. To keep attendance records straight, Sister Mary As- sumpta, S.M,, records the daily attendance. As Dean of the Upper Division, Sister also spends much time advising and assisting girls in their day to day problems. Of the many influences which aid in shaping the student at Conaty none casts a greater shadow than the guiding hand of the faculty. So it is that each graduate looks back with gratitude to the understanding and interest of her teachers, religious and lay. NTill the day break, and the shadows retire...N Canticle 2:17 Looking through the kaleidoscope of her four years, every Conaty girl recalls the pattern of lights and shadows which will ever remain silhouetted in her memory. Illuminating rays of spiritual vision cast by retreats, Mass, sacraments, Marian devotions shaped her halo of holiness. Penetrating the darkness of ignorance, streams of light etched the sharp outline of wisdom as she pursued scholastic achievement in quest of truth. Glimmering beams Hickered gaily to reflect her excitement during Spirit Week, class games, Field Day, various campaigns and drives. Momentary shades of disappointments and discouragement could not dim the spirited brightness of united activity. Leaving these lights, now the cherished shadows of the past the Conaty girl looks to the challenging rays of the future. Control Members Strive for Safety Under the direction of Sister Mary As- sumpta, dean of the upper division, the Senior Control sets the pace of high stan- dards for Conaty. Taking their posts daily these staunch seniors are found before school and between classes, in the yard or cafeteria, on rainy days or in June's heat on duty. For the purpose of maintaining order, Highlanders give of their time and energies unselfishly. Membership on the Senior Control is considered an honor by all Conaty girls.
