Scfwwg ,8ce Quack CaM wuhj mi The L. K. WILLIAMS MINISTERS' INSTITUTE le the brain-child of the late Dr. Joseph J. Rhoads, the flret Black president of Biahop College. The first session was h ld in the spring of 1931. Its purpose waj five-foldt (1) to provide a program of continuing theological education for ministers of the Christian Gospel; (2) to expose our ministers to the hose religious thinkers of the dag JCY KIRK WILLIAMS (3) to provide the leadership of our churches the opportunity to visit and know first-hand the condition, goals, and aspirations of Bishop College; (4) to provide opportunities for the churches to contribute to the on-going and gtovth of the College bg way of financial gifts and bg granting bishop the nolle distinction of training their goung people at Bishop College; and (5) to enible our churches to realise that our future aa a people Ilea in Christian education at home and in our churches aa veil as in institutions such as Bishop College. The Institute was named tor the Reverend Lacy Kirk Willises, a native of Eufala, Ala.,one of the most illustrious sons of Bishop. Dr. William was President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., Iron 1922 until his death in an airplane crash October 29, 1940. He also served as Vice President of the Baptist World Alliance. Lacy Kirk Williams was an outstanding preacher whose seraons exhibit an excellence of scholarship and of homi-letical expertise worthy of emulation. Ke pastored in such Texas towns and cities as Tonple, Marshall, Neva sota, Dallas, and Fort Worth. He began his pastorate of the Olivet Baptiet Church', Chicago, 111., in February 1916 inaugurating what a biographer refers to as the moat stupendous church program in the world (Theodore S. Boone, Lord! Lord! Dr. L. K. Williams, Detroit! Karlo Press, 1942, p. 181). His eminent associate pastor for nearly twenty-five years was Dr. Joseph H. Branham, Sr., father of Dr. John L. Branham, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Los Angeles, Calif. Lacy Kirk William ' record as a Christian minister-leader at tha local, national, and international levals, his concern for Christian aducatlon and for tha davslojoent of competent ministry within our churches, redound to the viedom of President Joseph J. Rhoads in naming this Institute--the LACY KIRK WILLIAMS MINISTERS' INSTITUTE. 199
