HOGAN Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown Diocese His Excellency, the Most Reverend James Hogan, was born in Philadelphia on October 1 1, 1911. He attended St. Charles College, Catonsville, Mary- land, from 1930 to 1932. He continued his studies in Rome, residing at the North American College. He was ordained in the college chapel on December 8, 1937 by Bishop Ralph L. Hayes, rector of the col- lege. He received a licentiate in Theology from the Gregorian University of America in Washington, D.C. Bishop Hogan served as assistant chancellor of the Diocese of Trenton. Later, he was named Chancellor and then titular bishop of Trenton in 1960 . Bishop Hogan was pastor of St. Mary Cathedral, Trenton and pastor of St. Catherine Church, Spring Lake, New Jersey. He also served in many diocesan offices. He was appointed Bishop of Altoona-Johns- town Diocese by Pope Paul VI on June 1, 1966 . We consider ourselves fortunate to reside in a dio- cese of which Bishop Hogan is the head . MONSIGNOR THOMAS K. MABON School Superintendent Monsignor Mabon was appointed super- intendent of schools of the Altoona- Johnstown Diocese in 1969 and is contin- uing to serve in this capacity. During this time, the Elementary Guidance Program was organized. Monsignor has encour- aged the schools to implement the Thrust of the Bishops Pastoral to Teach as Jesus did and to establish a community of faith. Financial assistance from acts 194, 195, and 89 has been put to good use in the schools. The office of the superintendent is now located in Holli- daysburg with a diocesan education cen- ter in Johnstown. A language art consult- ant and an art consultant are now mem- bers of the superintendent's staff. We at Bishop Carroll appreciate efforts of Monsignor Mabon to enable the Catho- lic schools to educate young men and women for time and eternity . For the Sophomores, it was the honor of being accepted to attend Vo-Tech, and getting the outstanding reputation of a techer. For the Juniors, it was another year of fun and laughs together and realiz- ing the true meaning of Friendship. For the Seniors, it was being able to be last getting on the Vo-Tech bus and not having to worry about the Sopho- mores and Juniors taking our back seats. We had a lot of good times at Vo- Tech. Remember the fear we had of getting hit by good old Dugan's snow- balls, and all the protests when our ! ii ?! Ji bus never showed up. Neville. im ' rf ff W 1 3- BASKETBALL '15-ve: 4 When we started our season hopes were high for a winning season. We started out fast, coming out 6 and 1. Then it seemed like the breaks were constantly going against us. But with the losses our friend- ship grew. The season was highlighted by Koenig's K.O. , Spoon's burning the cords, Latterner and Pion's rampaging the locker rooms, Randy's tough defense, and our offensive outburst when Terry had 46 and the team had 101 against North Star. But mainly, the season was fun. We never gave up on the team or each other. - I faq f i Z 1 1 . Jug ' ' Spoons Neville Y, V, -rf A ff 9 9.1 5, Dave Latterner This one is mine! I hope you win for your sake, not mine. Because winning's nice. It's a good feeling. Like the whole world is yours. But it passes, this feeling. And what lasts is what you have learned. And what you have learned about is life. That's what sports is all about. Life. The whole thing is played out in an afternoon. The hap- piness of life. The miseries. The joys. The heartbreaks. There's no telling what will turn up. There's no telling whether they'll toss you out in the lst five minutes or whether you'll stay for the long haul. There's no telling how you'll do. You might be a hero or you might be absolutely nothing. Too much depends on chance. On how the ball bounces. I'm not talking about the game, son. I'm talking about life. But it's life that the game is all about. lust as I said. Because every game is life. And life is a game. A serious one. Dead serious. But that's what you do with serious things. You do your best. You take what comes. You take what comes and run with it. Winning's fun. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point. Never letting anyone down is the point. Play to win. Sure. But lose like a champion. Because it's not win- ning that counts. What counts is trying. Seniors ,F . H, 'fa ' fl W ga' H Y L ' V Wan Af .YA AP. 'TT' gli'l3ii3 L' w , , is i K irq, SEL Vi' ,f , vw G 5 N. S gf' it T K -l .3 , ., lr. r .4 . 1. N J. .. I want to be one of the common herd , Not live in a sheltered way, Want to be thrilled, want to be stirred By the great crowd day by day: To glimpse the restful valleys deep, To toil up the rugged hill, To see the brooks which shyly creep, To have the torrents thrill. I want to laugh with the common man Wherever he chance to be , I want to aid him when I can Whenever there's need of me. I want to lend a helping hand Over the rough and steep To a child too young to understand - To comfort those who weep. I want to live and work and plan With the great crowd surging by , To mingle with the common man, No better or worse than I. Silas H .
