NO MAN IS AN ISLAND The 1965 Carrollian is a volume in a chronicle of a destiny. Enclosed in its pages is a young generation equip- ped with resolute souls, blossoming forth from the dawn to the high noon of their lives, fulfilling an ideal-no man is an island-trumpeting toward: . . . a destiny that makes us brothers None goes his way alone All that we send- into the lives of others Comes back into our own. At Bishop Carroll' we have witnessed a two-way circuit of giving, flowing from faculty and students. ln the classroom a teacher imparts knowledge and a bit of himself while reaping the reward of see- ing his student grow and prosper in the assimilation of knowledge. In any united effort whether it be of athletic, scholastic, or musical components, each student gives ofhimself. Benefiting his fellow stu- dents and with them enioying the success of tearn- work. Yet God, the Fountain of Giving, has overpowered them a hundredfold. The perpetual flowing springs of this Fountain will always storm forth in an unself- ish love channeling the giving. Thus the infinity of love is created, where, with the blessing of God, brother will continue to help brother. Truly there is no end to the sharing of love and no man is an island.

V DR. THOMAS A. DOOLEY Dr. Dooley was always interested in the young for in'them he saw the only hope of developing nations for a better tomorrow. 8 ti- we iii- Wit ,. eq: Dedication We, the senior class of 1965 dedicate our yearbook to Dr. Thomas A. Dooley because we find in him the ideal American Catholic. Both in Vietnam and Laos Dr. Dooley's example issues a challenge to youth to pray, to think, to act. Dr. Dooley first went to Vietnam in 1954 as a Navy volunteer medical officer. ln this capacity, he treated nearly 600,000 refugees who were escaping from Com- munist North Vietnam. ln 1956 he resigned from the Navy and returned to the Far East to set up a hospital in Laos which was the first such medical center in this part of the world. ln Laos Dr. Dooley cared for thousands of suffering Laotians, al- ways emphasizing the fact that this help came from America, which indeed it did. Upon Dr. Dooley's request the American people opened their hearts and donated money, life-saving drugs and themselves to help alleviate the suffering of others. As had been his practice throughout his life, Dr. Dooley placed his faith and hope in God. Although he relied on others, his own inner strength and trust in God reconciled him to his suffering from cancer and early death. On January 19, 1961 Thomas A. Dooley died but his example lives on. He was a man who was often lonely but never alone, a man to whom much was' given but who gave even more, a modern-day ideal who exemplified the greatness which is to be found in each of us if we but look for it. ister'
