PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION No less than other schools does the Catholic school pursue cultural goals and the human for- mation of youth. But its proper function is to create for the school community a special at- mosphere animated by the gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth grow accor- ding to the new creatures they were made through baptism as they develop their own per- sonalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith. — Declaration on Christian Education We recognize that to provide for the special atmosphere animated by the gospel spirit of freedom and charity it is incumbent on the faculty to continuously strive for a deep fraternal bond among themselves which will be extended to the students through a genuine concern for their needs. We allow freedom for the young people to make decisions, to plan and organize their activities, and to take responsibility for their mistakes without abdicating authority and responsibility on the part of the faculty. We try, then, to ex- ercise both freedom, not license, and authority in a spirit of charity in the hope of producing citizens trained in self- discipline and responsibility. — Bishop Boyle Philosophy of Education 2
