1972 BOYLE HIGH SCHOOL HOMESTEAD, PA. 15120 VOLUME 7 You are standing on the High Level Bridge. Below, the muddy waters of the Monongahela flow, carry- ing with them the sands and silt churned up in the pa- tient coming and going of barges. Here is Homestead built on the backs of men seeking freedom. The huge steel mills belch orange smoke into the blue sky, and steelworkers inside sweat before the blazing bars of metal. Ten months of experiences continued through the summer break for the hundreds of Boyle students. Football, which in- volves a quarter of the male population of Boyle and the interest of the other three quarters, kept the ball moving as the buses rolled for ex- hausting practices at McBride Park. 500 yards of dry dust, hot sun, and demanding coaches barking out orders and advice to the team that made Boyle in '71. Linemen, backs, and coach- es went through the motions of offensive and defensive plays, preparing for the first scrim- mages weeks away. Above the United Candy Store on Eighth Avenue began another summer happening of Boyle students--practice for the marching and concert season of the Lancer Band. Sessions that began on a field across from St. Michael's ended in a week-long experience of music, marching, fun, and hard work at Zelienople. Eight hours a day practicing, and practicing, and re-practicing formations that were to make the Lancer Band one of the best in the Valley. Groups lived in farmhouses, waking early in the morning to revelry and a full schedule of work. Mr. Robert Galvin, direct- or of the band, culminated the week's work with the Lancer's presence in the 1971 County Fair parade at South Park. Other students were involved in a Summer Theatre. Mr. Bobinsky directed scenes from VIRGINIA WOOLF, MAN OF LA MANCHA, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, MY FAIR LADY and other popular works. Summer jobs, though hard to come by for most, kept many of the students and faculty busy. Boyle people were scattered around the county in restaurants, libraries, golf courses, department stores and small shops. About 30 Senior girls who had nothing to do, got togeth- er one Sunday for a football game. And so the year that had ended jumped vig- orously into the next--1971-72. 10 ACTIVITIES 13 14 FRONT ROW: C. Smith, R. Modero, C. Gress, S. Fisher, D. Pavasko, M. Kajsak, J. Corcor- an, B. Crunch! Crunch! We won five and lost four. It was a long, hard- fought campaign. Football at Boyle has always been a rough road. When the bus made it to the practice field, the coaches did and we did too... the train- ers and water didn't always get there. We anxiously awaited game time to ex- perience the soft cushion of a grass field. All right you guys, get moving! That's horsefeathers! Out of the shade into the heat: off your fannies and on your feet! Shout! Shout! Shout! Coaches try to reach your brain through your skull, rather than your ears. We made it but it wasn't easy. For every action there was an equal reaction. We're dead tired coach; let’s call it. You do the playing; I'll do the coaching. Let's try it again. 34 Wham! Schweinberg, that was 34 Wham! Let's try it again. Let's try it again. The statistics tell the story. New Brighton trounced us. They were big. They were better. The re- maining three losses to Greensburg, Mon Valley, and Carroll could have been ours. Look at the record: 1st. D. Yds. R. Yds. P. Success may be determined by game scores but its true measure is in the hearts and minds of the coaches and players who gave their best. They can relate the personal dis- cipline and long hours of practice to self-fulfillment. Boyle had a successful season. Boyle Homecoming 1971 means coming home --a return to what once occurred in the lives of students who attended Boyle. With this return, countless memories of the past are relived that will never be forgotten. This fact, combined with spirit and weeks of preparation, is what made October 15 and 16, homecoming week- end 1971, a most enjoyable affair. The activities began on Friday night with the vi- brant burst of flames from the bon-fire. The excite- ment was then carried to a dance in the school gym. Saturday, the day on which the football game was held, proved to be the highlight of homecoming for all. Not only was it a time when senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members were honored, but their parents as well. Even though we lost a fan- tastic game, it did not seem to put a damper on the evening. 24 26 HOMECOMING QUEEN CANDIDATES AND THEIR ESCORTS: FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, Susan Becze and James Sluganski; Kathy Carson and Edward Laughlin; Janet Erleba, Queen, and John Fajerski; Lynn Wonsock and John Gidel; Carol Neitznick and Ron Cassidy. The most important re- sult is the announcing of the 1971 Homecoming Queen. Everyone in attend- ance waited impatiently as the court approached the stands. Surely, no one person could have been as happy as Janet Erleba was, for she was chosen as the Homecoming Queen. The closing event of Homecom- ing 1971 was a social for the seniors and alumni. 27 CAGLES WITHOUT FEATHERS CAN'T FLOCK TOGETHER and Jr. Homeroom, 106 Freshman Homeroom, 306 29 When everyone entered school on Nov. 5, they were curious spectators of the Black and Gold doors. Homeroom doors were decorated in honor of the Lancer game with our ri- val, Serra. Winning doors were announced during fourth period. A massive pep rally was held after this. Band, cheerleaders, and spirit-filled students took active part in the rally. This was only the be- ginning. The end came on Saturday, Nov. 6, when the Boyle Lancers defeated the Serra Eagles, 6-0. 30 On a rainy Wednesday night, December 29th, a group of cheerful students passed through the doors of Hospitality Inn and into a night filled with magic. The graceful hallways and open staircase led to a glass-enclosed corridor where the delicate scent of food and a bright Christmas tree greeted arriving couples. Outside, the dome-covered pool lay glit- tering in the night; inside, the hauntingly reminiscent Theme from Summer of '42 began a night of wine and dance. Slowly the hall began to empty as students left for the numerous parties ahead. As the last couple left, all that remained was a silent room, quietly echoing the laughter of happy people and the magic moments which are now the memories of the 1971 Semi-Formal. 35 His Excellency, Our Bishop The Most Rev. Vincent M. Leonard, D.D. BISHOP OF PITTSBURGH A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP LEONARD I welcome the opportunity to extend greetings to the faculty and students of Boyle High School. In these days of concern for the continuation of Catholic education on a secondary level, it is encouraging to know that Boyle High School continues to be of service to the Catholic children of the community of which it is a part. There is no doubt that secondary education in the Diocese is facing a grave crisis. It will only be through the full cooperation of students, parents, faculty, and diocesan officials that continuation of secondary education will be assured. There appears to be a tendency today on the part of youth to be adversely critical of previous generations. Yet, if one carefully considers the advancements that man has made over the years in the fields of health and education, there is sufficient reason to speak well of past generations. However, we cannot be wedded to the past. We must move forward in Church and Community confident that if we are true to the principles of our faith our endeavors will be as successful as they have been in the past. To a certain extent, the future of the Catholic Church will be in the hands of young people like those graduating from Boyle High School. The issue of the moment is not whether past generations have failed or not. It will be your responsibility to so live in openness, sincerity, and honesty that the generation which follows you will not be equally critical of you. May the Good Lord grant faith, courage, and perseverance to all the students and faculty of Boyle High School. Bishop of Pittsburgh 36 June, 1972 Mr. John T. Cicco SUPERINTENDENT OF PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC SCHOOLS Diocesan Superintendent A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT I am, indeed, grateful for your kind invitation to be part of the 1971-72 yearbook for Boyle High School. June 1972 marks the end of a decade of service rendered by the administration and faculty of Boyle High School — a service for which the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Schools Office is extremely grateful. During that time, the students have performed admirably in academic achievement, character development, physical accomplishment and, most important, moral stability. In short, Boyle has been a school of which we are justly proud. 1 offer my sincere congratulations to the graduating seniors. I am confident they will continue the living witness of the Catholic philosophy of education exemplary of previous graduates. I pray that Boyle High School will continue to function as a viable Catholic educational institution perpetuating the Catholic objective — For God and Country. uperintendent of Schools 37 History is on no man's side; the question is will we allow ourselves to be caught in today's strong undercurrent of change, or will we hold tenaciously to that which is good, that which is our heritage, until something more effective emerges to replace it? Boyle High School is good; our faith can preserve it. We can make this school indispensable by standing up and declaring that we have a better program; we offer a way of life. History will favor us if when the children of the 1972 graduates are ready to enter high school, Boyle will be waiting for them. 38 MR. ALLEN MIKACH Junior-Senior Counseling GUIDANCE MR. I've been anticipating my freshman experiences for two years. At first, I was afraid; then I was unsure; now.. .I'm very bold. Perhaps tomorrow I'll be very, very bold. But then again, tomorrow I may be a Sophomore in which case I'll have a right to be bold. OR WILL I? Before this, it was Sister, may I do this? Sister, may I do that? But in this maze at Boyle, I'm told to do this; I'm told to do that; and, you guessed it... I don't have time to do anything. Busy, busy, busy!! Boys, boys, boys, when will I ever get my work done! As you guessed. I'm a Freshman girl who hopes soon to be an upper class Sophomore. 62 HOMEROOM 311 Mark Michael Raymond Patricia Cathy Frank Doubt Dougherty Fonos Fonzi Franlis Giordano Michele Phillip Bernard Julie Susan Susanne Gress Howell Hruska Jenkins Katilius Kominsky Elaine Richard Robert Patricia Kraszewski Mader Marcone Matey Janice Mary Lou Mayni McCafferty 63 HOMEROOM 308 Mary Ann Richard Flaherty Hanus Sheila Herward Duane Hess Rose Marie Kovello Marianne Kuklinca Kathleen Barbara Magliere Manning MR. ANTHONY FALVO Maureen Marianne O'Reilly Patterson On the other hand, my name's Joe. I thought I could play foot- ball until the Football Coach told me that I have to remember plays. I can't even memorize the numbers, let alone the plays. But then, I always wanted to be a weight lifter, and I heard you can get academic credit for weight lifting at Boyle. I soon learned you can't. I can understand why boys like to play basketball, but why must we take Latin??? Algebra is a MYSTERY... English composition.. .WHEW! My dad said maybe I'll be a newspaper reporter. I think my talents are limited to delivering newspapers. Oh well! I'm here at Boyle to be taught. I'll just leave the job of education up to my teachers. 64 Cheryl Robert Thomas John Stephen Popik Sokolovic Sweeney Szuch Tima Elizabeth Michelle Tovlin Unrue Here I am, the Freshman girl again. I wanted to be a cheerleader or a majorette. The competition has been difficult. I'll sure be able to tell my sister to go to a smaller school where there aren't so many talented girls to compete with. Oh, SHOOT. I didn't want to be a cheerleader anyhow. I think next year. I'll apply for student foot- ball manager. Who said the boys should do this job? Woman's Lib, you know! I've heard of working one's way through college, but here at Boyle, you have to work your way through High School. Someone's always capping down on you. Survival of the fittest seems to be a way of life. Ever go through days without lunch? It can only happen to a Freshman girl at Boyle. Uniforms, uniforms... Young lady you better get your uniform cleaned... young lady, walk straight, please... Young lady this, young lady that!! I'm so tired... I'm not sure I'm young.. In fact. I'm not even sure I'm a Lady. John, Freshman boys are not to dress sloppy. Keep your books in order, keep your clothing in order.. keep your mind clean and in order. Grade School was never like this. If this is education, why must we pay for it? MR. LAWRENCE TOMASIC DUKE Rita Borkowski HOMEROOM 313 My dad says Boyle students have been very successful after graduation. My only problem is how will I ever make it to graduation. I'm not even sure I'll make it to my sophomore year. All my teachers are threatening to flunk me. But I'm not worried. Last week, I at- tended a senior assembly for Future Army and Navy Recruits. With a little luck, I'll soon be old enough to go to the service. We have learned how to think differently than we did before. We've learned to love our teachers, who, we hope, have learned to understand us. We trust that with time, we will be able to understand ourselves. We're looking forward to going ahead with our studies in our sophomore year. Geometry and chemistry will be lots of fun, learning all of the new tricks to find the answers. We've made nice friends among our classmates. Most of us can barely wait for September, 1972. Looking back on the season, our record (2-9) was somewhat disappoint- ing but it might easily have been 6-5 with a few breaks. Inexperience, as well as our inability to fill all the weight classes, meant the difference be- tween victory and defeat. If the ]. V. team is an indication of what to ex- pect next year, we might surprise a few people. The J. V. team posted a record of 9-1-1. In closing, I think the entire team deserves credit for a great effort and the courage to stick it out. -Dave Chalfant- 73 PATRONS SPECIAL Most Rev. Anthony G. Bosco Msgr. Vincent Burke Rev. For three months the administration and faculty were making plans for the evaluation of the academic program at Boyle High School. For a period of two weeks in March, the faculty members were evaluated by a team of spe- cialists in each field of academic endeavor. The reason for this evaluation was to measure the extent of implementing the school's phi- losophy of education; to receive commenda- tions and recommendations in order to reor- ganize the 1972-73 school year. The teachers conducted classes as usual. Students behaved naturally. In some classes the students were unaware of any spectator and very natural responses were made. Among the evaluators were: LIBRARY.. Sister Linus Brown, RSM, Librarian at Cane- vin High School, Pittsburgh; RELIGION.. Rev. J. Patrick O'Brien, Diocese of Pittsburgh and Rev. They have their business honor experiences to add to the asset side of their data sheets. When it's time for a mailing to be sent out, the Business Honor girls know all about it. Keeping busy with all the jobs involved are: M. Mayni, K. Tunney, K. Simon, R. Rushe, R. Marcinko, M. Bodnar, and K. Demko. All the studying Rose Rushe did paid off when she placed third in the Wheeler Schol- arship Test sponsored by the Business Honor Society. 117 VARSITY s E N I O R S Judy Mayni Rosanne Smetana 118 FRESHMEN JUNIOR VARSITY 120 This year, 28 students selected from History classes, literally packed up and left. They were on their way to Erie to attend a student U. N. held at Gannon College. They spent a weekend debating, discussing, and at times, arguing current problems such as Red China's en- trance into the U.N., The Problems of Nuclear-dis- armament and pollution. Sister Joan and Sister Theresa Martin kept a close watch on the group as they caroused thru Erie.. Mr. Marko, the group moderator, got it together when the group was seri- ously debating. U.N. DELEGATES SERVICE CLUB 121 FRENCH CLUB The Spirit of France was alive and active this year at Boyle. Members of the French club worked hard to start a French newspaper that would be made available to all French students and all others interested. CA ET HA, the new courier, made its debut on St. Valentine's Day, quite appropriate for the romantic spirit of the country. The newspaper contained articles of interest, cartoons, crosswords and recipes. CA ET HA became quite a success and to all those who contributed their efforts Thank you. Another activity sponsored by the French club was a FONDUE party given for senior French students. The party was hosted by Mrs. Tackas, the mother of Mariann Tackas. A cheese fondue avec vin blanc was served. Guests used long-pronged forks to spear crusty pieces of French bread which were then dipped into the steam- ing sauce. Appetizers punch and une- fondue au chocolat served with fruits and cake completed the repas. This year proved to be one of great interests and fun for Boyle's French scholars. 122 123 Searching... The dreary weather, as the Seniors entered the church for their last mass together, was similar to the spirits of many people in the class. Roderic Gress, Senior Class President, served as the lector. The mass was said by Father Habe, the Headmaster, who delivered a very appropriate ser- mon on Respect for Oneself. The mass was followed by a social, given by the freshmen, in the Boyle gym. 140 SENIOR HONORS DINNER On Wednesday, May 31, the Mothers Club sponsored the annual Senior Hon- ors Dinner which was held this year at the American Legion Head-quar- ters in East Liberty. This dinner was held to honor not only those whose achieve- ments made them excel in their par- ticular field, but to honor all Seniors. It also gave the chance to say goodbye to fellow classmates and friends. 141 142 VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS -- June 4, 1972 by Mark Juba Good evening, Reverend Clergymen, Members of the Administation and Faculty, parents and friends, my fellow classmates: If life, as Robert Frost suggests, is a road, then education is part of the process of traveling that road. Today when we pause at a fork in the road known as commencement perhaps we should think of the people who-have assisted us in our journey and prepared us to travel to new places with new people. For we have arrived at this position, today, be- cause the concern, enc purpose and direction to 01 despite all we had learned ence rested with the invol brought then to life and f I considered how our School, and encouraged us administration and faculty challenge for involvement, various activities. The unique contributions of each of us, when added, become more valuable dian all die lifeless facts learned from books. As we carry this wealth to the fork in die road, our parting cannot make us poorer because die time we have traveled together has made us richer. This richness is not an end in itself, but rather an investment which we are obliged to share with others; becoming for them what die people at Boyle have been for us, what we have been for each odier. As we become die future parents, teachers, travelers... sharing this value of people with odiers, our experience at Boyle is not ending but merely expanding and continuing. We must consider well the words of Robert Frost and find at the fork our own special road, not nec- essarily the one taken bv everyone else, but the one which will make all the difference. ----------' gr.il Mil bo ol-W I hope that years from now | because all diat you have dc resents that value of people wl Boyle. can dc is parents, admiuistratoi ■ SALUTATOR I AN Good evening.
