Each seems the same, yet an element is absent from each that makes it different. Sister Ann Margaret served Boyle for three years as teacher, counselor, and friend. In her efforts, she offered Boyle something more, she made it something more. And we are something more for the experience. It is in appreciation for these tremendous efforts that we dedi- cate this edition of the Boyle Yearbook to Sister Ann Margaret. Junior Varsity Football Cheerleaders: Denise Balogh, Cindy Grove, Lorriane Marcone, Lorry Venego, Carol Benney, Bev Cush, Mary Jane States. 59 BOYLE IS GREAT IN 1) In their first year under the direction of head football coach Joe Scully, the Boyle Lancers made vast strides towards devel- oping the type of football Boyle Students and fans have been hoping for. The team posted an improved 3-5 record, but over- shadowing this was the fact that the team gained a great deal of respectability and recognition in the high school football com- munity.School spirit reachedanall time high. The players and coaches had pride in themselves and the school had pride in the team. The success of this year's football program was the result of months of hard work and determination on the part of the players and coaches. It all began with Coach Scully’s Physical Fitness and Summer Conditioning program which ran from March until August. The purpose was to develope agility, strength, quickness and endurance. The program was conducted on a voluntary basis and although nearly every football player attended, the program was not directed strictly at football players. In fact, of the 77 boys that attended, 51 of them came better than 75% of the time. This fine conditioning program played a large part in pre- paring the squad both mentally and physically for the tough season ahead. The team gave Boyle fans a preview of the type of football they could expect with two impressive pre-season scrimmages. The Lancers defeated Weirton Madonna, the No. 1 Catholic football team in West Virginia, 2 TD’s to 0. The team also impressed in a very rugged scrimmage with Carrick High, runner up in the tougher than usual City League this year, finding themselves outscored by only one TD 2-1. However, the determination and the hustle displayed by the players in these scrimmages was carried over into the regular season and became part of the “BOYLE LOOK for '68. The season opened on a somewhat less than happy note as the Lancers dropped their first two games to Pa. Jr. Republic, and a very powerful Donora team led to an undefeated season this year by All-State fullback Malcolm Lomax. But the team came to life as they smashed Frazier and proceeded to win the next two games over league rival Serra and East Deer Frazier, last year’s A.I.C. Conference Co-Champions. Visions of a Catholic League championship danced in the heads of the players and the student body. Unfortunately the fantastic arm of All-Catholic and All-State quarterback John Hogan of Mon Valley, and the overpowering weight advantage enjoyed by the Huskies of Bishop Carroll prevented the Lancers from capturing these two crucial games. The final game of the season was played against New Brighton, 1967 WPIAL Class A Champions. Although outweighed 29 pounds per man the Lancer line was moving fast” and the team very nearly scored a major upset, winning all the statistics, but losing in the final seconds of play with the ball on the Brighton 2 yard line! Inspired by the fine offensive showing this season, with 13 players pouring across the goal line 26 times and setting many new school records, and especially by their impressive performance against New Brighton, the coaches—the returning lettermen— and the student body are looking forward to next season and another chance to prove that Boyle High can play tough, hard-nosed, exciting football. ’68 STATISTICS TEAM STATISTICS Opponent Score Rushing Passing Ttl. Loyalty, desire and dedication are the main qualities of any team, and our team excelled in this. From Captain Don Ellis to our only sophomore, Tom McCafferty, I saw these virtues which I'm sure will lead to the makings of outstanding men. Selfishness was never present among them. Complete harmony reigned, making my year with them a truely enjoyable one. I’m going to miss our seniors next year. There’s that ready smile of Jim McCallister, our fine hustling guard, who has played for me many years; Ruben Montanez, our exciting Puerto Rican, who accepted his many honors graciously and humbly; George “Tito” Rosario, our effective rebounder, whose strength and determination were a key to whatever success we obtained; Harry Oliver, our defensive stalwart, who was the most underrated player on the team; Paul Little, our hard worker, who has excellent jumping ability; Don Ellis, the most accurate shooter in the Catholic League, who fulfilled all my expectations as an exceptional captain. I was proud to coach these fine young boys and admire everything about them. From the heartbreaks of the Canevin losses to the happiness of the South Catholic victory they showed true character. My life has been made richer through my associations with them. Truely I will miss each one. Part of the New Look could be seen in the brand new uniforms and wrestling mat which the team displayed this year. Along with these things, the Lancers showed a “New Look” in their wrestling style—a definite ability which gave mat fans plenty to cheer about during the season. Under the direction of Head Coach Ken Guerra and Assistant Coaches Tim Bober and Bill Weisser, the Lancer matmen captured three matches this year, the most in any single year since the sport was introduced to Boyle a few years ago. Early in November the team began preparing for the rugged season ahead of them with extensive practices every evening in the school gym. Over 50 boys came out for the team, but within two weeks this number was reduced to 25. As many boys learned, the required physical conditioning of a wrestler is much higher than that of athletes in other sports. Since the wrestling program is a new one, the Lancers had a hard time competing with experienced schools like Central Catholic, South Catholic, Washington D.C., and Canevin. The team started slowly, losing to Hampton and Mon-Valley but in the third match of the season they traveled to Sewickley Academy and brought home a 33-31 victory. After dropping matches to some other Catholic teams, the Lancers were able to come up with back to back wins over Serra and Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind. The Serra victory came on the Lancer home mats, a crowded gym cheering with every match. The Lancers grabbed an early lead and held on for a 31-22 win. The School for the Blind proved no competition for the Lancers as the team was still hot from their win over Serra. Although the School for the Blind displayed some fine wrestlers, Coach Guerra and his boys were able to walk off with a 41-18 victory. Post-season action saw the Lancers appear in two tournaments: The Pittsburgh Diocesan Wrestling Tournament and the Western Regional Wrestling Tournament. Although the team didn’t bring about any major upset in the tournaments, all of the boys benefited by the experience they gained by participating in them. One of the brightest moments of the year for the coaching staff and the team came when freshman Dave King won the J.V. 138 lb. championship at the Diocesan Tournament.
