Robert W. Habe, M.Ed., Headmaster The Most Reverend John J. Wright, D.D. BISHOP OF PITTSBURGH . . . and year of promise The Most Reverend John B. McDowell, Ph.D. AUXILIARY BISHOP OF PITTSBURGH Superintendent of PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC SCHOOLS diocesan leaders in the year of faith . . . 8 In Recognition One position in Boyle High which requires total dedication by a person is that of vice-principal, and the one totally dedicated person who fills this position is Sister Martina. To Sister Martina, being vice-principal is no ordinary nine to five job. It is a total application of herself. Even though being vice-principal is rougher than any student can imagine, it is because of Sister Martina’s talents and abilities that she can cope with existing problems and still inaugurate future programs. Sister Martina is more than an overseer; she is involved in working with, and very much for the students of Boyle. So even though our thankfulness to Sister Martina is not always apparent we want her to know we are thankful. 9 communication . . . SISTER M. ANTOINETTE, V.S.C. Boyle High School’s varsity football team had a disappointing year. The record was 0-9 but it doesn’t show the fact that the team played with injuries to many key players. Faced with the bigger teams it was hard for the Lancers to compete. Not to make any excuses for the squad, but they were still in there trying. The team put out every effort for a win but couldn’t seem to succeed. Now with the split of the Catholic league into two sections Boyle will hopefully be able to compete now. The climax was reached when Steubenville Catholic was stopped in an exciting game at the Arena in Steubenville. The opponents had previously been unbeaten and were considered one of the best teams in the school history. This game was followed by the team losing out in the finals in the Five Boro Holiday Tournament. It was apparent, however, that once the season started, height was going to be a factor. Although out-re- bounded in every league game on the rough Catholic league the Lancers never quit and in many cases out- shot their opponents percentage wise, but couldn’t compete off the boards. During a time out, Coach Tom Jackman, illus- trates an offense on the hardwood floor. 134 Jumping in vain to stop Bull Rizzo are two unidentified Ragles. 135 frosh march on . . . Surrounded is Larry Wargo in an attempt to put his team ahead. Freshman star, Tommy McCaffcrty goes high for an easy lay-up against the Lagles of Scrra. wrestling The Lancer wrestling team completed its second year of competition with one win and six defeats. The season, although somewhat disappointing, had many bright spots. This year marked the first time a Lancer wrestler, Bob Elash, made it into the state finals. This is something that the school can be proud of. Because there was only 4 seniors on the team the coaching staff is somewhat optimistic for the years to come. Coach Guerra has 23 experienced wrestlers returning for the 68-69 seasons. With this in mind the task for next year in putting up a decent team shouldn’t be as difficult. SITTING: Bill Murray, Tom Volk, Leo Bollens, Mickey Slczak, Dave I acchiano, Tim Luxbacher, Conrad Bollcns. Jim Sunseri. MIDDLE ROW: Tim Hartz, Larry Coyne, Marty Noone, Ed Laughlin, Tony Sunseri, Joe Vickers, Rich Pasquantonio, A1 Ciuska, Ed Sage, Bob Elash. BACK ROW: Dave Oniboni, Bill Monahan, Vince Balisteri, Jim Hasek, Bob Davis, Larry Stawartz, Joe Kimbal, and Mark Ruddy. 136 senior grapplers Determination! Victory! for Mark Ruddy. Jim Hasek Caution! 137 Ed Sage ■ Mark Ruddy i Bob (Snag) Elash golf Bob Benton, Bob Dee, J im Walsh, Roger Ellis, Bob Walsh, Harry Carnegie. In its third season of varsity competition, the golf team had a rough time. Many times in their matches they didn’t score a point or only a half, but they always were close. Often their players were being defeated by only a stroke or by one hole. The highlight of the season was the outstanding performance of Roger Ellis. Throughout the season he went undefeated. He was the one who got the half point for the team. Rog- er was entered in the Diocesan Golf Tournament and won his first match but lost the second one. The other golfers did a good job, but not good enough. There are three returning letterman and the ’69 season might be the best yet for the fairway fellows. 138 senior golfers Bob Walsh Roger Ellis Jim Walsh 139 SITTING: Gene Trout, Jim Murphy, George Rakar, Steve Kura. MIDDLE ROW: Sam Gigliotti, Tom Rettger, Gary Schaming, Gary Lester, Martin Finegan, Tom Connolly. STANDING: John Weir, Bill Kinavey, John Marchinsky, Pat Barry, Nick Kopay, Steve Gress, Kevin Harris, Jim Blocher, Wayne Bugel. In a year marked with many postponements due to very wet spring, the Lancer baseball team wasn’t able to play many games. However in the games played they were able to come up with Victory over Penn Hall Academy, West Mifflin South and Thomas Jefferson. In the league the Lancers weren’t as successful. Plagued with bad fielding the crew gave away many games. John Weir, as he has for four years, has been the mainstay of the Boyle mound staff followed by Jim Blocher, on the team for the first time. Other outstand- ing work was done by Wayne Bugel, lusty hitting outfielder, Gary Lester, slick-fielding shortstop and speedy Gary Schaming in centerfield. This has been the most successful season for the Lancer nine. It was the first season the team has scored over 10 runs and posted over 1 victory. So you see the season was more success- ful than some may think. Jim Blocher John Weir Sam Gigliotti BUI Kinaevy baseball “Lancer bench” looks on as their fellow players take the field. The Lancers wait in alley behind school for an upcoming game. i.V Tom Connolly Gary Schaming Gary Lester Martin Finegan in and out of season . . . Lifting his knees high, Sean Kelly, shows that he hopes hard work will eventually lead to a victorious Lancer team. Mike Mulvihill shows his shooting ability in the faculty varsity game. The revitalized look includes a new coaching staff of the Lancer Football Team. Shown above are the Head Coach Joe Scully, Rich Erdel- yi, and Tim Bober. Determination covers the face of newcomer Chris Scully. Varsity star Dave Tener, guards the speedy Rich Erdelyi. Brian Dougherty throws up a left handed hook shot as Barney Jackman comes in for an apparent rebound. ART A 142 new headmaster assumes charge Father Robert W.
