Boyle High School is one of our youngest secondary schools, but it is already well known for its loyalty to our oldest and best traditions. Hence, the honor paid me is indeed a treasured one. I would hope, however, that the students who decided this dedication will understand it in the sense which I have taken the liberty of interpreting it. Frankly, I do not relish the dedication as something per- sonal, but rather as a dedication to those values and ideals which my office as Bishop and as Superinten- dent represent. In this sense, your choice is deeply appreciated. I take this to mean, then, that your graduation theme will be a renewed determination to seek the best in your personal and common life in terms of love of the Church and love of our community, for the office of Bishop and Superintendent truly stand for these. Hence, you will be determined, as graduates of Boyle High School, to live as staunch, alert and dedicated citizens of both Church and nation. This ideal is a goal worthy of all Catholic students and quite in keeping with the traditions of Boyle High School. We expect that Boyle students and graduates will accept this lofty objective as their own and constantly strive to achieve it, and having achieved it, make their contribution to Church and nation. If they do, then the sacrifices made daily to have Boyle High School will seem as nothing to bishops, priests, parents, teachers and community. May I express sincere congratulations to the Class of 1967 and add the prayer that you will always be loyal to the principles which give meaning to the school, and have determined its unique character. These same principles will give meaning to your life and help you form a truly noble Christian character. — Bishop John B. McDowell Dedication In every age, great men have arisen to stamp an era with their character. Common to the great is a zest for living, an energetic drive, a passion for action that can be summarized in the word SPIRIT. It is the spirit of a man that makes him a leader, that makes his influence felt in ever-widening circles. Where that spirit is dynamic, properly channelled, and youthful, there is no telling how he can change the world; there is no measuring his influence on that world. Such a man, such an influence, such a force for good is Pittsburgh's school superintendent, Bishop John B. McDowell. Under his leadership, the Catholic school system of Pittsburgh has become synonymous with progress, with open mindedness, with vitality and growth. Wherever the best in educational progress is mentioned, the name of Pittsburgh’s educational leader is there. He has made the diocese the place where the action is ; in many cases, he has been in the vanguard of that action. He has dared. Because of his tremendous foresight and his faith in the future, he has had the courage to undertake tasks larger and vaster than his own lifetime. These are the qualities that we admire in our Bishop, our school superintendent. They are the qualities that most appeal to our youthful ideals, to our unhampered spirit, and to our desire for challenge. Our zest for life, like his, is great. Because he typifies for us the spirit of challenge, creativity, and resourceful- ness, the Senior class of Boyle High School dedicates this issue of BOYLE 1967 to 10 The Most Reverend John J. Wright, D.D. BISHOP OF PITTSBURGH 9 or you, 9 am a fjisf op, but cvitfi you 9 am a GAristian —c5 lucjustine Uhe Spirit of Aui iorifp is Service Father Richard L. Pilarski, Tony Russo, and Marty Finegan aren't sing- ing but discussing one of the many topics of the junior relig- ion course. This was the first class after the Notre Dame- Michigan State game. Could it be . . . ? The rest of the class listens most attentively. Sister M. Antoinette waits for the right answer which appears slow in coming with a sophomore religion class. Perhaps her senior girls will brighten up the day. 21 Sr. M. Sharon, V.S.C. seems somewhat surprised at the answers she is getting in English-literature, sophomore style. All the students in Miss Reznik's junior English litera- ture class concentrate on their assignments. All that is except Anna Marie Siket, Joe Colizza, and George Serechin, who pause for the flash of a bulb. William Chapko, Mark Turon, Bill Bingham, and MikeMroz intently study the economics and government course taught by Mr. Keally. Mr. Mannion's question in world history will be answered in a minute. Here, some freshmen take a peek of what’s in store for them in biology course during sum- mer school session. Charlotte Miller weighs the precipation while Rose- mary Pusatere works the calculations after an ex- periment in chemistry lab. Sr. Goretti prepares a surprise from her bi- ology files as she in turn is surprised. Mr. Baden explains the vector to the senior physics class. The vector is as easy as phili- dog and as mysterious as Jim- my Durante and is as fearful to encounter a s Abraham Lin- coln. 30 Sr. Genevieve explains one of the many pro- blems in A. Dolores Jacobs seems to be taking full advantage of the opportunity in the chemistry room. Sc uvaS Vocational The second year in welding finds Michael Dembskiapro in that field at Schwab. Bob Dan- kovic gives his undivided atten- tion to his assignment in the first year of auto shop. Gary Lucas looks as if he will cause an upset by the weight in his hands. Under the watchful eyes of instructor Mr. B. Ed Peretich isn’t really playing switc hboard operator though AC has a busy signal in electronics. Mr. Coder and Rudolph Sterner are try- ing to get on the line. Stan Wrobel looks like a pro at the diesel engine with Mr. Yoder. A Sound JlCincf in a Sound iody The senior girls gym classes are full of action. Mary Lee Spelman and Elaine McKinney show determination in kicking the ball to their team's side of the gym in a relay game. Urging the team onward are Mary K. Spelman, Anne Tomica, Elizabeth Hallman, Margaret Heim, Janet Bodnar, and Carolyn Lancos. The opposing team is exerting just as much energy in encourage- ment. The study of mental health is not neglected, as seen here in the sen- ior health class, instructed by Mrs. London. 38 Enthusiasm (to have their pictures taken) is shown by the senior boys during a health class. Mr. Bober lectures on health problems to the students. .. .in Jfea i i ancf G asses While I'm struggling to do twenty- five push ups, I'll bet the guy up- stairs is sleeping,” thinks Gary Lester. It gives those who produce it a spirit of oneness; it gives those who read it the feeling: I'm glad I belong. I'm proud to be a part of all this. Editor Janet Bodnar and Moderator Sister Mary Alice have the job of taking apart the paper after it comes back from the printer's. Purpose: We try not to make the same mistake twice. What does it mean? A yearbook means a lot of things to a lot of people. It means different things to different people. This brings up another question. What is a Boyle yearbook? Once again, it means different things to different people. ... To a few people it means something to move when dust- ing the bookshelf after a few goings-over. . . . To Boyle students it's a memory of their days at Boyle —1967 style. . . . To Boyle seniors, it brings back their final year at Boyle, the last year, the happiest year, the saddest year. Boyle '67 also means partic- ular things to particular people. . . . To Kathy Spel man and the senior section it means all those crazy committee meet- ings. ... To Sue Thomas it brings back the thought of class sched- ules and what do you call that whatchamacallitin science and how doyou spell Spelman Spel- lman and Kinavey Xinevey. ... To Mary Lee Finegan and her group it recalls the mem- ory of trying to identify all those underclassmen, some of whom, they'd never seen. ... To Terry Shields, it re- minds him of all those 2-minute lunches so that he could get up to 201, and the golf pictures taken in Frick Park. ... To Kathy Smith it recalls trying to squeeze all those extra activities in. ... To Pauline Bodnar it brings back those trying pic- ture taking sessions and mak- ing sure no small club or or- ganization had been forgotten. ... To Lorraine, it means trying to read often illegible and scribbled handwriting and typing it--in triplicate. ... To Wanda, it means trying to capture the right spirit and getting the picture to fit that spirit. ... To each of the section editors it reminds them of their pages into which they put so much work. Kathy Rabb and Irene Needham, Business Wanda Schlecht, Dividers Norman Polivka, Layout . . To John Urban, BOYLE '67 is a thrill of a lifetime; having proof that something has been well done, much of the credit going to him. . . . To George Kennelly, it means wearing a rut to Hill's Studio with a new role of film. . . . To Norm, it means all those 9th periods spent among pictures, pages, and layouts. . . . To Kathy and Irene, it brings back the thought of checking and re- checking those green slips and recording all those patron donations. . . . To Sister Roberta, BOYLE '67 means all the guidance, consideration, thought, and prayer that went into making it what it is. . . . To Ginny, Boyle's second annual was a dream come true; an experience and a half. . . . To Everyone on the staff it means Saturday mornings of writing copy, tedious croppings, taking pictures, and re-taking them, mental anguish of give me a heading for page 22. GRID IRON SUMMARY Although the record of the 1966 Boyle Lancers was an unim- pressive 2 wins and 7 defeats, the slate could have been 6-3 with a few good passes of the pigskin. But this was not to be. Things like pass interception, fumbles, missed extra points, and mud seemed to plague the Black and Gold. Even though they didn't show a winning record, the Lancers did make history by achieving two firsts, the first victory ever on a varsity level for Boyle High and the initial victory in the Pitts- burgh Catholic Loop. These victories came over South Public and Mon Valley Catholic, respectively. Also this year, Central knew that they had been through a game! At the end of the season four seniors were chosen to partici- pate in the Knights of Columbus ALL-STAR Game. They were John Kominsky, Frank Wargo, Ken Falce, and Gino Smalley. When these and five other seniors will be gone, the Lancers and Coach Mannion will have an abundance of lettermen returning for the '67-68 season. But all in all, wherever the Black and Gold traveled, their presence was heavily felt. Tense moments become personal gripping moments for injured Paul Weir, his fellow player Frank Wargo, and fans who hold their breath till all is right. 98 John Kominsky Paul Weir Frank Wargo BOYLE OPPONENT 24 Bishop Carroll 27 South (Pgh. Nevertheless, it did hold in store many exciting moments. In many games a few bad breaks spelled the difference between victory and defeat for the Black and Gold. The team was led by Captain Carmen DeLuca, Dave Timko, Ed Peretich, and Jerry Shuba, all seniors. How- ever, the juniors in the squad showed great promise and it is quite certain that the names of Verbanik, Milke, Tarr, Kinavey, Tener, Kura, and Balistrieriwill have a lot to do with the out- come of the 67-68 Catholic A” champions. In most matches the Lancers had to spot their opponents nearly 15 points due to the lack of wrestlers in certain weight classes. Seniors on the team were co-captains Jim Davis and Tony Amendola also John Ellis and Chuck Moulayianis. Next year’s team should improve with 5 lettermen returning. Others who are expected to see plenty of action are Jack Horensky, Nick Kopay, Jerry Shuba, and Wayne Bugel. With this experience and other players expected to try out for the first time, the Lancers have the nucleus of a powerful ball club. John Weir points to the upcoming baseball season. Jim Kontul is surprised to fine that it is almost spring. The Lancer Baseball Team (at least part of it) meets Coach Mannion in preparation for the upcoming season. Instead of the traditional party, complete with noise makers and a multiplicity of people, his plans included a midnight bowling date with a handful of friends. But the happy anticipation of a good time was never realized. It was a horrible, terrifying crash-an awful death. While we were busy meeting a new year, Tom was meeting a New Life. We don't pretend to understand; we only acknowledge the will of God. And we remember. In our prayers, and in the Spirit of our class, Tom Vojtek is very much alive.
