In this Marian Year, which officially proclaims your glory, your beauty, and your dignity, O Virgin Mother of God, we praise you! Commemorating as it does your Immaculate Purity, we especially beg of you to assist in bestowing the grace of purity and chastity upon the students of our generation. During our school years you were al- ways present to comfort us when we finally realized it was you whom we needed in times of uncertainty. In the future years, when we are no longer under the guidance of our former teachers and sisters, we implore youwith utmost sincerity to make our lives--like yours--grace-full. Here at Baraga, the Glee Clubs are carrying on that tradition as anyone who has heard them practicing for such events as the Christmas Pageant, the St. Patrick's Day Concert, or singing just for the sheer pleasure of singing will attest. The Freshmen Girls' Glee Club, al- though new, has shown the sweetness, freshness, and eagerness characteristic of the young. The Sophomore Girls. practically old hats, have been able to render surprisingly difficult songs with en- viable beauty and charm. Quick to catch on, though oftimes difficult to keep attentive, are the girls in thelunior-Senior Glee Club. Their knowledge of music, backed by their experience, enables them to blend their voices in a real tribute to this important phase of joyous living. 7fqww4af77 ' Our voices have come from God, and it is only fitting that We should have rais ed them in a beautiful Christmas tribute to Our Redeemer and His Mother. The Christmas Pageant, depicting events before and after the Savior's birth and culmi- nating with a tableau of the Light of World in the arms of His Mother, who holds out her r o s a r y to the needy world, was backed entirely by the singing of the combined Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs. Charlotte Brainerd took the part of Our Lady. After all, it's a man's world, and nothing in the world can compare with the deep, calm full- ness of a man's voice. The Boys' Glee Club. though only a few years old, has already begun to rival the supremacy of the Girls' Glee Clubs atBaraga. Father Otto Sartorelli trains the boys, Sister Marie Celine. the girls. Q , 7a and Um! Under the direction of Sister Mary Xavier, who came to Baraga three years ago, dramatics have come to play a prominent part in our extra-curricular activities. This year was an especially busy one with the Centennial Pageant in the fall, the Christmas Pageant, and finally, the Senior Class play, A Con- necticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The Centennial Pageant was presented in each of the seven deaneries of the Upper Peninsula as a cli- max to the first 100 Years of Growing in the Dio- cese of Marquette. In the See City of Marquette, the task of portraying the history of the diocese fell to Baraga. Members of the cathedral parish repre- sented the bishops in the final scene which pictured the Savior as the Eternal Priest. The pageant, Written by Father Thomas Ruppe, depicted events in the life of Frederick Baraga, first bishop of the diocese, and the history of priests and religious orders who have servedherethroughoutthe century. Also portrayed were such historical events as the discovery of the New World and the martrydom of Saints Isaac Jogues and Rene Goupil. , - ig? 24 , ' , . .4 , 'v f, 5 ' .WW ,. . pr . 1. . .V- , t ,,, . Yes, we are really and truly seniors, and. if we seem a bit cocky and superior, the hard work we spent in turning out a really good BARAGAN should more than make up for it. The yearbook begins as no more actually than a financial headache! Ads mustbe solicited. ex, patrons and boosters obtained, and the whole budget carefully worked out. This was done by business managers, George Raish and Mike Hayes. The ad section was our first deadline. Mike and George worked it out aided by Francis Reynolds and Carol De- Rusha. After the finances had been taken care of, the work of the publicity managers began. This year's managers, Jerry King and Sharron December, were able to make tl'1e 1954 BARAGAN drive the most suc- cessful ever held at Baraga. Om wwjmecfa 44524214 Then came the big job--that of deciding and working out a theme, taking the pictures, fitting them on the pages attractively, and writing interesting copy. This was the job ofthe editors. There were times when Con- nie Jorns. editor-in-chief, wondered just what would be the answer to the query Georgia Parker, underclass editor posed: Will our s Q BARAGAN win the All Catholic and the Al1 State awards merited by the '53 an- nual? Margaret Riopelle, make-up editor, had trouble getting a layout for those senior pages to suitMary Courtney, the Senior Class editor. The heaviest portion of copy writing at the busiest time of the year fell to Ellen Thoren, editor of the activities section.
