In Califor- nia, approximately 14,000 drums are reconditioned each working day. By reconditioning in lieu of manufacturing new drums, we save approximately a million tons of steel annually. Of all steel conserved in the U.S. our industry conserves one-fifth of the total Drums can be reconditioned for one tenth of the energy required to manufacture a new drum I he energy saved is equivalent to one billion eight hundred million gallons of oil annually in the United States. If drums were not reconditioned, millions of empty drums would end up in our already over- burdened landfills. Because reconditioners pay for empty drums, illegal discarding by the emptier is discouraged.
