The Bihiscan Presented by Senior Class Birnamwood High School Bi mam wood Wiscons in 1 )70 We, the graduating class of 1970, dedicate our annual, the Bihiscan, to our departed friend and classmate, Patricia Skodinski. Even though she left us early in her life, she made a mark we shall always remember. Pat's cheerful face brightened all our lives, and when she left us, she left a gap never to be filled. We offer our deepest condolences to her family, but leave those to whom she was near and dear with the consolation that she had many friends who include her in their prayers, and we shall never forget her smiling face. Knaak Junior Prom The Birnamwood High School Junior Prom was held Saturday, Kay 3, 1969 in the gymnasium. Our theme was Strange Enchantment and Bill Lasso and his Orchestra provided the music. The Grand March began at 10:1 5; leading it were crownbearers Becky Beckett and John Szews. Immediately following the March was the crowning of the new King and Queen, Lester Praaza and Rhonda Kopitzke; by the 1968 King and Queen, Craig Koerner and Vicki TenHaken. The gymnasium was decorated with an array of crepe paper and flowers. The false ceiling came to two centers, and from each hung a ball of cut mirrors that sent rays of light in all directions. The center featured a water fountain with an overhanging umbrella of evergreens and flowers. The stage was decorated with bushes and a statue which gave the effect of a garden. The entrance featured a trellise that was entangled with vines and flowers. The Court of Honor consisted of a couple from each class. They were as follows: Seniors, Don Pappenfuss and Linda Voltz; Juniors, Jerry Katsche and Dianne Liethen; Sophmores, Danny Lex and Karen Frederick; and Freshmen, John Karpf and Jan Beversdorf. Class History Eight years down, four to go! As freshmen, we thought graduation was a thing of the far, distant future. Little did we realize that the time would pass so quickly. In August, 1966, thirty-six freshmen entered Birnamwood High School. We felt like pilgrims on a foreign soil. That is, we didnât know where to go first. On September 16, we were initiated by the sophomores. In October, we gave the return party. Officers elected for the year were President, Linda Pietz; Vice President, Sue Nousen; Secretary, Joan Korbisch; and Treasurer, Rhonda Kopitzke. Student Council representatives were Lester Praaza and Sue Nousen. We entered our sophomore year with thirty-six students. Our first order of business for the year was to elect officers. They were President, Rhonda Kopitzke; Vice President, Josephine Fischer; Secretary, Jerry Katsche; and Treasurer, Sue Nousen. Student Council representatives were Alvin Kruit and Dorothy Resch. In September, we initiated the freshmen and they gave the return party in October. On April 1, we ordered our class rings. How could we wait until September for their arrival. Two years left....time surely flys! Here we are, thirty-three juniors anxiously awaiting the arrival of our classrings. On September 11, the rings arrived. Class officers for the year were President, Josephine Fischer; Vice President, Rhonda Kopitzke; Secretary, Lester Fraaza; and Treasurer, Charmayne Lex. Student Council representatives were Marilyn Jensen and Marvin Uttecht. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom, held on May 3. Lester Fraaza and Rhonda Kopitzke reigned as king and queen. The theme of the prom was Strange Enchantment. Bill Lassow and his Orchestra provided music. A good time was had by all. August 28 marked the beginning of one of the most exciting and eventful years of our lives. We started our senior year by electing officers which were as follows: President, Alvin Kruit; Vice President, Sally Rew; Secretary, Vickie Marten; and Treasurer, Bob Ecker. Student Council representatives were David Szews and Josephine Fischer. The next step was to elect the Bihiscan Staff. Our class colors are green and gold and our class flower is the yellow rose. On September 30, we had our senior pictures taken at Wausau. In November, we held a Harvest Carnival. It was very successful. We planned to take our class trip to the Northernaire. Today, the thirty-two members of our graduation class have mixed emotions happiness for reaching our destination, but sadness for reaching it so soon. Today, Tomorrow, the Future depends on us Class Prophecy Tine: I960 Scene: Dianne Lie chan and Josephine Fischer raeet in the hall of the 3irnamwood City Hospital. Why, Dianne, what are you doing here?-' Jo, long time no seei Diun't you know that I've been head nurse here at the hospital for almost two years now? It s my coffee brea.c, how aoout coning into tne lounge to reminisce for a while? I came here to see about a part-time joo, out I guess that can wait, have you heard from any of our old school chums? Yes, Gladys hurt and Joyce doth are noth nurses here as the hospital, and Xarlayne .ietzel works with tne handicapped children. I saw Joanle Korolsch, or I should say Cummings' Just aoout a month ago, sue had her third child. Oh, really] Marilyn Matz is a success in her field, too. She started an old maidsâ home on the other side of town. ÂŁa_t leirzba and Sue Mousan are her longest boarders. Have you nef. d from 1 GroovyT mean, Alvin Krult? He and David Cast are research technicians at the nearby research laboratory. They played a big part in that mars mission of a year ago. You know, the one where 3oo Scker was command pilot aboard the spacecraft. You donât say] I knew iob would go far, but not that far] Just a few days a?o I received a letter from Audrey Hitz. She and her husband tick are operating a very prosperous beef cattle farm. Speaking about farming, Jim and John Karpf have gone into partnership and are the top producers of milk in the entire county. What ever happened to hark Schroeder? Last week my husoand and I stopped into his bar, Schroederâs Tap. Larry Opper is Mark's top bartender. Marvin Uttecht and David Szews have gone into business, too. They are in partnership selling snowmobiles. Last winter they held the top selling record in all of Wisconsin. What ever happened to their good pal, Lester rraaza? He turned his brother's junk yard into an antique car lot. Gary Muench is his sales manager. You'll never gue33 what Steve llante does] He is a wild game hunter in Africa. He has the largest collection I have ever seen, with everything from elephant tusks to tiger paws. Last week I went to make a de osit in the new First Matio: al 3ank, and you'll never guess what I found out] Charmayne Le and H-.-h.n ar secretaries there. We got to talking and they told me that Linda Pietz is on the 3oard of Directors. . no says a woman can't go far in tne business world.â I see that Vickie ?-?arten is doing well in the world of high society, too. I read last week's society page in the paper and it said that she'd be entertaining Wisconsin's first woman governor, Marilyn Jensen, in her fabulous colonial style home. What ever hap- pened to Sally dew? The last I heard, she started a gambling casino in Las egas. Dorothy ftesch has become a great comedian. She sometimes puts on a show at Sally's cluo. Did you watch the Indianapolis 500 this year? Leiand 3arke won first placeJJ Alfred Carlson and Jerry Hat ache are his pit crew.'' Well, it looks as though my break is about over. BHS History The citizens of the village of Birnamwood will always remember that wonder- ful day when their small village erected an education center for their children. The first school in Birnamwood was a small, one room, building located on tne northwest corner of the present school yard. This building was equipped with a rude desk, and benches for the children, and was also used as a civic center for all public meetings. On Sunday religious services were held there. When the larger building was erected, the old school house was moved down the hill and across the street to serve as a village hall and jail. The new school building was a two department graded school. Then in the fall of 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew P. 'Cady came to Birnamwood to take charge of the department grade school. In the fall of 18914., agitation for further education of graduates from grade school hopes grew for the possibility of a high school for Birnamwood. The citizens of the village of Birnamwood had a vision of larger things for their children--a further education of the world----a high school. The dream became reality. The State Superintendent of schools issued a charter in 1895 for a Birnamwood High School. In the month of May 1895, an examination was held to determine if the village of Birnamwood had at least twenty-five qualified to do high school work. Twenty-six met the qualifications. As of that time, a three year course was required in order to graduate. The first to receive a diploma of a three year completion was Ray N. Van Doren. At the time of his graduation, he held a first grade teacher's certificate. In the spring of 1897 there were nine graduates from the three year course. In 1898 THE FOURTH YEAR WAS ADDED and five of the three year graduates returned for added qualifications. Principal Cady did all the work and supervised grades until the last two years of his eleven with Mrs. Cady. Mrs. Cady was an assistant teacher during the first year for the eighth grade. The next year she devotedly donated her time to high school work. Then four years later returning from Chicago, where M. P. Cady had finished the medical course, Mr. and Mrs. Cady decided to remain in Birnamwood, and Dr. Cady became clerk of the school board until his death, December 29, 1921. In 1898, the school consisted of the primary, intermediate, grammar, and high school rooms. Since then the teaching stafT had tripled, the building enlarged and modernized. The increasing enrollment and extra curricular activities had become important features of school life. The lyceum was purchased to afford the room for athletics and forensics. Principal Grant Cook organized the first basketball team in 1905. At that time the girls also played basketball and had an outstanding team. Football was given a trial, but never developed. High school basketball continued to thrive and was one of the major interests of school athletics. There has been many changes in the school during, the years, and steady progress, new ideas, newer methods of teaching, new activities, keeping pace with modern advancement. In the old days each graduate composed and delivered an oration for Commencement day. This has given way to a modern speaker for the entire class. The class day exercises remain almost unchanged. There are still the will, prophecy, poem, and song that has continued onward. Many men and women who have reached the top of the ladier in their chosen vocation, laid a foundation for their success in the classrooms of the Birnamwood High School. Hundreds of interesting stories center about the old school. And when the old Birnamwood High School classmates meet after a long separation the big question of the day will be Do you remember? Yes, as long as this high school has stood, we will always love, rever, and salute with great pride, Birnamwood High School--our key to the future. As the first students of Birnamwood High gave to its school a song of depth and meaning, we tne last students of Birnamwood High would like to revive it as a historical momento to all those who have ever walked through the doors of THE BIRNAMWOOD HIGH SCHOOL. SCHOOL SONG As Freshmen first we come in school, We look quite green and take it cool. As Sophomores our work is dear, We work sometimes when the Principal's near. In Junior year we take our ease. We visit, laugh, and sing our glees. In Senior year we act our parts. In making love and winning hearts. And then into the world we come. We've made good friends and studied some. The saddest tale we have to tell, Is when we bid our friends farewell. As long as this High School has stood, We've loved, reverenced, Birnamwood.
