Bertie 3arrett didn't dislike girls—it's just that he became tongue-tied in their presence] Because of nis friendsnip for Steve Darnell, Bertie was placed in a position where he had to pretend to be engaged to a girl (any girl would do). Bertie finally proposed to three girls in a row and found that proposing isn't nearly the chore he thought it would be. When the three girls got together and compared notes they descended on Bertie and demanded an explanation. From tnis point on 3ashful Bertie was sitting on the edge of a volcano. Not until the very final curtain did Bertie cover himself with glory by trapping Lefty Frank, a desperate gangster, and at the same time he won the hand of the one and only girl. Whatever you say goes. Lefty. JUNIOR PROM The Birnamwood Hign School Junior Prom was held on Sat- urday, May 1 , 1968, in the gymnasium. Our theme was Gone With the Wind and Bill Lasso and his Orchestra provided the music. At 10:14-5 the Grand March began; leading it were the crownbearers, Cheryl Suess and Ron TenHaken. Following the march was the crowning of the new King and Queen, Craig Koerner and Vicki TenHaken. They were crowned by the 1967 Royalty, Larry Lex and Pat Meyer. The crowning took place on the stage under the veranda of a beautiful southern mansion. Cedar boughs and magnolia blossoms decorated the trellis which provided a colorful and an appropriate entrance. Off to the sides, green, pink, and white streamers gave the gym- nasium an outdoors touch. The ceiling was covered with blue streamers to give the appearance of the sky. The fragrance of cedar which filled the air was due to cedar hedges which partitioned the punch table and the band from the magnolia decorated tables, and framed the stone wall in front of the mansion. A bird bath in a garden of blos- soming magnolia trees adorned the center of the floor. The Court of Honor consisted of a couple from each class. They were as follows: Seniors, Joe Koerner and Cindy Bevers- dorf; Juniors, Mike Knauf and Linda Voltz; Sophomores, Dave Szews and Rhonda Kopitzke; and Freshmen, Mike Kaufmann and Jane Nemke. This is how each member of our incoming Freshman class of U0 students felt as we began our bewil- dering new experience of high school life. And, of course, the upper- classmen didn't help too muchl Class officers elected at our first class meeting were as follows: President-Donna Opper; Vice President-Helen Matzke; Secretary-Vicki TenHaken; and Treasurer-Faye Kimball. The Sophomore Class of 1965 ini- tiated us in September and we gave them a return party on October 8. At the end of our Freshman year we held a class picnic at Rib Mountain. Due to a number of students leaving our class we entered our Sopho- more year with 3U students. The class officers for our Sophomore year were: President-Mike Knauf; Vice President-Terry Fischer; Secretary- Elaine Bauch; and Treasurer-Helen Matzke. The Student Council was or- ganized this year and the representatives for our class were Helen Matzke and Donna Opper. We initiated the Freshmen class on September 16, 1966 and they gave us a return party a few weeks later. Also, on Janu- ary 27 we sponsored the Homecoming Dance. Then came the exciting event of ordering our class rings. We ordered them on March 12 and began the long wait until they would arrive the next year. The highlight of our Sophomore year was the post prom which was held May 8. The Poor Boys provided the music. That summer we made the transition from Sophomores to mighty Ju- niors and proved it when we received our class rings on September 15. The first order of business for our Junior year was the election of officers which are as follows: President-Jim Wyne; Vice President- Mary Matsche; Secretary-Donna Opper; and Treasurer-Vicki TenHaken. Student Council representatives elected were Elaine Bauch and Craig Koerner. To earn money we sponsored a dance on October 20 with the Drovers providing the music. But the greater portion of the year was devoted to organizing our Junior Prom which was held on Saturday, May !+, 1968. The theme was Gone With the Wind and Craig Koerner and Vicki TenHaken reigned as king and queen. Bill Lasso and his Orchestra provided the music. Vicki TenHaken attended Badger Girls' State and Don Pappenfuss attended Badger Boys' State. Thus ended our Junior year. Now came the most important year of all--WE WERE FINALLY SENIORS 1 Class officers selected for our Senior year were: President-Diane Kopitzke; Vice President-Mary Matsche; Secretary-Vickie Clark; and Treasurer-Elaine Bauch. Student Council representatives elected were Mike Knauf and Linda Voltz. On October 10 we went to Wausau to have our graduation pictures taken. At various class meetings we decided on class colors of green and white and the white rose as our class flower. The next order of business was to decide where we should go for our class trip. We voted to go to the Northernaire on May 26. We gave our class play Bashful Bertie on Monday, January 20, 1969. There are 28 members in our graduating class and the four long years till graduation have finally passed—only they weren't as long as we thought they'd be as Freshmen. In fact, now we all agree that there were quite short and they went quite fasti The Past Is Forever Gone, The Future All Our Own. CLASS PROPHECY The year: L976 The setting: Marie DeRoos is shopping and is in a harry to set home. In her rush out of the store she runs into an old class- mate. Why, Cathy Schroeder! It's been years since I've seen you! Oh, but it's not cchroeder; it's EussI I'm awfully glad to see you, Marie DeRoos. It's not DeRoos anymore; it's McCarty. Since when was your name changed to Buss? Oh, about four years ago. Two years after Vickie Clark got married. Speaking of old classmates, have you seen any of the other kids? Yes, I just came from the bank, and you'll never guess who I ran into. No, I haven't any idea. Vicki TenHaken is the President of First National Bank, and her secretary is Donna Opper. They make a real good team. Yes, and I saw Hope Matz and Mary Matsche last weekend at the Tigerton Dells. You knew that they bought the Dells and changed it into a night club, the Club Continental? Yes, I read of their success in the paper. I heard they hired Eugene Resch and Ron Matsche as bar tenders. It sounds like they really struck it rich. Oh, the other day I went to the library and I ran into Elaine Bauch. She's the head librarian at Wausau library. She always did like books. Yes, she did. Did you know that Linda Evans is in the hospital? She just had a baby boy. Linda and her husband are still living on a farm. I haven't seen her for a long time! While I was at the hospital I ran into Debby Opper and Helen Matzke. They nurse at St. John's Hospital now as R. N. 's. Yesterday I read in the paper that Plane yopitzke is head of the Funeral Director's Association. It appears she's following in her father's footsteps. I heard that Rita Schairer is now teaching shorthand at Lakeland. Yes, and Don Pappenfuss is the principal there. Did you hear that Aaron Cummings and Harry Korbisch are the new owners of Kidway Par? They added a Big dance hall and stage show starring David Mortenson and Linda Voltz as a comedy act. I read in the paper that two of Peg Gulke's famous paintings are on display at the Hirshorn Art Masearn in Washington. She surely did become a famous painter. Did you know that Craig Koerner is editor of Senior Scholastic? He really enjoys his work, but in school I would have never imagined him wanting to be editor of Senior Scholastic! I heard that Richard Resch and Fdwin Resch now run the funny farm for funny people.
