The setting for this realistic fantasy, Balcony Scene by Donald Slser, is a church balcony during the funeral of a young ne’er do well. First of all, there is the spirit of the dead Man himself, Richard Herrema, his Friend, Donald Culver, (who seems to be an escort), a Gangster, Ray Kennig, (also going on the ”journey”), a Mother and Daughter, Gayle Wincentsen and Barbara Lemke, (friends of the Man’s bereaved fiancee), a Husband and Wife, James Cannon and Betty Fremming, (neighbors of the dead Man) and lastly, the Girl, Claire, played by Eloda Gast. The Man pleads with his Friend to be allowed to talk to the gir], because he maintained he had so much to tell her, so much to explain. Then the people begin to arrive for th.j funeral. The thoughts- brave, pathetic, and petty, but always honest—begin to flow out and the spirit of the dead Man flails back against the unconscious judgements that he cannot reach. Husband and Wife arrive, with their Remember-when-he” remarks. The Daughter sees a former suitor of Claire’s in the congregation- and the Man mutters resentfully, ’’He’ll never have a chance”. Y hen he turns to the friend for reassurance, his reply is ”1 have seen people live an entire life of loneliness just because they didn’t have the strength to forget”. Gradually the people leave, exhibiting all the lettle annoy- ances and frustrations that clutter up so many lives—and fade away with death, just as the voices in the balcony fade away with the closing of the curtain. Under the able direction of Mrs. LaVon Kopitzke we were given an A” rating at the league contest, an A” rating at the district contest and a ”B” rating at the sectional tournament.
