We started in our Freshman year as a riotious group, but now, as Sophomores, we have reformed considerably and hope to continue doing so in the future. Most of our boys participate in basketball, base- ball, and in the future will take part in football. The girls take part in most of the extra-curricular activities, such as, G.A.A., Girls Glee Club, Chorus, and Library Club. On October 2, 1947, we gave the Freshmen their Initiation Farty. MIXED CHORUS The mixed chorus which was organized this year, under the direction of Mr. Steven Cotone, made its first appearence at Christmas. In the fall we enjoyed ourselves by form- ing four baseball teams and playing each other. During the winter we participated in volley ball and basketball. Due to the fact that we had difficulty in securing the hall, our periods had to be given up. There are steps yet to be taken in the spring. V e hope that next year, there will be as many girls joining as there was this year. THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Senior Class Play, The Atomic Blonde was presented under the direction of mr. Pappenfuss and Mr. Weihrouch. Its a howl—hurricane in three acts, packed full of fun, thrills, excitement and suspense. Bob Nickerson and Skid Werling are co-owners of an old broken down summer resort hotel. The boys must pay off a mortgage note in ten days or else . They be- leive all their troubles are solved when Maisie de Wolfe, the famous novelist, writes she is coming as a guest. Maisie has been publicized as The Atomic Blonde , end the boys think she will draw customers like flies. Guests start pouring in, including rival club women, who are determined that Maisis de Wolfe shal lecture before their clubs. The Atomic Blonde’s trunk arrives—but no blonde . At the beginning of the year we had been in debt, but the One-Act Play Contest held in Birn- amwook helped bring the club in the clear. This year's One-Act Play was Doctor Decides. During the first part of the year, members of the club attended the Speech Clinic a Rhine- land pr. At Christmas time the Drama Club and the Chorus shared a caroling party. The residents of the curamunity appreciated the caroling by giving many much appreciated gifts of candy, cookies, fruit, and pop corn. Page 26 0N£ ACT 1-LAY On Monday, November 3, Birnamwood was host to the Wolf River Valley, One Act Play contest. Gresham received first rating with I’m A Fool. Bowler pre- sented, In Spring A Young Man’s Fancy , and Mattoon gave for us Trifles . Birnamwood’s play was a comedy, The Doctor Decides . The F.F.A. is an organization of vocational agriculture students who will be farmers or are in- terested in agriculture, and which also helps to build moral character and leadership. The program of work is pruning and planting trees, treating seed, two radio broadcasts, public speech contest, fertilizer demonstrations, and var- iety demonstrations. It was decided that we meet every second luesday of each month. The F.H.A. gave a nre-lenten dsnce and a Leap Year Valentine party. Fifteen of our F.H.A. girls attended the rally at Antigo Februery 7, 1948. There being little money in the treasure the F.H.A. sold candy bars during the noon hours down at the lyceum. The student council was organized in the fall for the purpose of governing the activities of the students and assist and promote discipline in the school. Carl Luebbe was elected president, and Robert Hettinga was elected judge. The representatives and classes they represent were as follows: Frederick Fuss and Ray Vollmer, seniors; Mildred Steebs and Peter Kaufman, juniors; Joanne Chapman and Richard Herrema, sophomores; Romona Roblier and James Cannon, freshmen. The Junior Promenade was held at the Mayflower Lake Pavilion on May 9, 1947 with music furnished by Gliff Hoene and his orchestra. A garden setting, with blue streamers covering the ceiling 8nd glittering stars, gave a very beautiful effect. The theme song, The Old Lamp Lighter ,, was featured during the Grand March, which was led by the King, Ray Vollmer, and the Queen, Regene Krueger. The coronation ceremonies succeeded the Grand March, which W8s held at 10 o clock. The couple was crowned by last year’s King and Queen, Newton Reopke and Pstricia Tierney. David Tierney 8nd Nancy Vollmer were the crown bearers. Others in the court of honor were Clifford King and Carol Platta, Roy Mosier and Violet Lemke, Marvin Reiss- man and Bette Terras.
