This, the preamble to the constitution of Birnamwood High School tells what the student government means to do. . But, how did we happen to get this government? This has been Mr. Grosenick s pet idea for several years, and this year his Senior Social Problems class decided that it should go into effeot. A constitution was drawn up by the class and presented to the student body for ratification.lt was ratified by a large majority and then it was up to the Junior and Senior classes to select candidates. The Seniors were to nominate three candidates for student president and from their class Tom Corning, Edna Tornow, and Clarence Roepke were chosen. The Seniors and the Juniors were each to nominate one candi- date for judge. The Seniors nominated Junior Koerner and the Juniors nominated Donald Klotzbuecher. Then came the great politi- cal campaign “terminating in an all—school election Tom Corning and Junior Koerner turned up the victors. The constitution provides for a council to be made up of two members from each class—a Junior and a Senior member, the Junior member to be carried over to the next year. It also provides for a faculty advisor and it was our luck to get the man of the great idea Mr. Grosenick. This council meets once a month to plan campaigns and decide punishments. ,, , . The judicial department tries the cases which have violated council laws. The judge is aided by four policemen who report the violations of the law. Policemen are changed every month. Although this is the first year, the plan seems to have worked well, and the Seniors leave their best wishes for the future success of this student organization. The play is all about Tabbie Phillips, the youngest daughter in the Phillips family, and her pals, Midge and Pert, who amuse them- selves by joining a Lonelyhearts Club. They have been corresponding with a cowboy, using the name of the maid, Beola, and the picture of Tabbie's older married sister, Nella. The cowboy, Larry, comes to claim his bride, and at about the same time Nella, who has had a spat with her husband, returns home. Meanwhile the socially ambitious Mrs. Phillips is vieing with a Mrs. Darrington for the backing of a famous historical author in the two ladies' race for presidency of the local historical society. Mrs. Darrington, as part of her plat- form, proposes that the society buy the Phillips home, a Seventeenth Century Colonial edifice, which is controlled by the bank and rented by the Phillips family. All these various threads of plot, and a few others beside, culminate in Tabbie's hands on one fatal Saturday, and the story of the play is how she spent that day, like a juggler, saving one sister's marriage, getting a husband for another, finding her brother a job, ransoming the old homestead, and last, but not least, getting her mother elected. Mierkev Row I Hohensee, Koerner, Burke, Krull, Oatz, S , Frohman, C. Under the guidance of Mr. Kraus, the 1941-42 edition of the orange and black cage team, won the Wolf River Valley Conference championship, with a record of 11 victories against 1 setback. Con- sistency, good coaching, and team work brought the ultimatum. The squad picked up momentum as it went along, dropping their only decision in the early stages of the conference race to Mattoon 18-15. The defeat had its good points though, because it made the boys realize they would have to play steady ball right down to the wire. When the final averages were compiled, it was found that Bimam- wood had a well-balanced club, since they had doubled their opponents1 points. Although this would lead one to believe that the team had a high-powered offense, just as much success can be attributed to a high-geared defensive machine. Here the old adage that the best offense is a good defense can well be applied. At any rate, the team had a sufficiency of both to enable them to cop the top rung of the conference ladder and give Birnamwood its first championship since 1938. Page 22 The debate team of the Birnamwood High School visited several of the neighboring high schools, including Marion, Wittenberg and Stevens Point. The district tournament was held at Stevens Point. The Birnamwood affirmative won one of their debates. This one was from Wittenberg. This was not such a wonderful record, but when the fact that we debated such schools as Wausau, Rhinelander,Merrill and Marshfield is considered, we can say we did not do so badly. The declamations were all very interesting and entertaining. The orations brought forth many excellent ideas and were given in the finest manner possible. Of course, we must give a great deal of the credit to the coaches, Mrs. Nathness and Mrs. Harper.
