We'll all go forth, some far, some near For some there will be strife. Some will go onward and upward To the highest field of fame, Some will start slipping, go backward, But, do not be put to shame. V.e'll find a path or make one, We'll follow the narrow way. Until our goal we have won At the climax of life's day. We'll all have to battle with hardships, But don't lose your grasp or let go, For we have a guide and a leader, Who will help us o'er come the foe. We will all be contented and happy, When we've found a path or made one. When we will put our cares aside For our battles we have won. —Merna Schoenike -11- Left to right: Junior Class Row 1: Rastl, Szutkowski, Fremming, Krubsack, Pukall, Miller, Klotzbueker, Row 11: Brown, Meverden, Nearing, Brumm, Falstad, Holtz, Matz, Spanbauer, Janness, Roepke Klinner, Head, Corrie, Hamilton, Roloff, Wheeler. The G.A.A. started off with a bang this year, after its great success last year, with the enrollment of 24. The officers elected by the club were: Doris Wahlers--president, Ruth Roepke—vice president, June Krubsack—secretary and treasurer, and Miss Fuller as our advisor. The prupose of the club is to give those interested in athletics a chance to play various games, and it aims to develop good sportsmanship among the girls. At the end of the year each receives a reward if they have the required amount of points necessary. Last fall we went on several hikes. We took our lunoh with us, and after we ate we played softball and then re- turned home. Our softball team was a great suocess this year, going undefeated throughout the season. We believe a great deal of the credit goes to Merna Nearing, our pitcher. In the winter we played volley ball and cage ball. Due to the faot that we had difficulty in securing the hall we had to forget about basketball, but we hope to take it up again next year. We are planning more hikes to be taken soon, and are looking forward to the opening of our softball season again. In all we have had a very successful and enjoyable year. -20- BAND Row 1: Voigt, Schoenike, Postler, Y ojtasiak, Gatz, Krull, Grosenick (Director). The class of 1940 presented a thoroughly modern drama- tization of Mary J. Holmes world famous novel, Tempest and Sunshine at the Lyceum, April 20. The entire action of the play took place in the living room of the Middleton family cn a plantation in Kentucky. Here Joshua Middleton and his wife, Nancy, lived with two daughters Julia, whom Joshua had nicknamed Tempest because of her fiery nature, end Fanny whom he called Sunshine because she was so sweet and lovable. When young Dick Wilmot came to Kentucky, to teach school he was inclined to like Sunshine, but Tempest made up her mind to attract his attention and did, succeeding in winning a proposal from him. Suddenly there arrived upon the scene a handsome young physican from New Orleans named George Lacey, who fells in love with Sunshine. With the help of Mrs. Ida Carrington, a socially inclined widow, Tempest, contrived to make Sunshine think that Dr.Lacey was fickle and tricked the doctor into a proposal. The end of the play found a thoroughly repentant Tempest who had confessed everything and in a beautiful and moving scene, the two sisters, Tempest and Sunshine, found that their love had overmounted everything. Sunshine won Dr. Lacey for her husband and the play ended with the two sisters in each others arms. The negroes fur- nished much of the humor.
