That time out from the ordinary. Spend Januar writing a paper on the eco- nomic development of Birm- ingham, working fort} ' hours a week at the hospital, teaching children, exploring the busi- ness world, seeing Russia, or loafing. Interim is many things to many people; perhaps it is one of the times when we can best see and en- joy the diversity that makes ' Southern special. 29 Chapel Plus! It seems there ' s always something happening at the Chapel. Indeed, the activities planned by Stewart Jackson, along with the other campus ministers and the Religious Life Council, seem to provide a ministry for almost everyone in the college community. Worship services, fellowship groups, the weekend-off, and the Last Lecture Series are but a few of the contributions made to life at Southern. 30 31 33 .1 0 Ti t SHMTr jw Signs of the Time You Still Have Time ..,,j; To Make Brlk ' n Days of Fre edom ' y- ' 3-T rcth btcavst ii tloor creak ' :r ' ' - ' : WA t L liFjMi ok A1 lvk Dr. fanios H. It was a time for fun, fellowship and worship at Camp Sumatunga. Students from many religious denominations and from various groups on campus got together to get to know each other and to enjoy the beautiful weekend. The weekend was carefully planned with activities such as hikes, bonfires, and worship services. The Retreat was sponsored by the Religious Life Council and most of the activities and services were lead or planned by students. The theme of Weekend Off ' was appropriate because of the rela. ing atmosphere of the retreat. The retreat was a great way to begin the Fall term. It united the group of students and created new friendships and happy memories. The weekend was an inspirational time for renewal of body, mind, and spirit. — Diane Holliman 49 Senior Art Exhibition Kathleen Real Jeffrey Ritch (bottom left) Paula Andrews (bottom right) 50 Jeffrey Mitchell Freda Selma Doris Clark 51 Bands Provide Music Throughout Year Wind Ensemble 52 53 Musical Notes Megan Wells wins Stephens Steve Kimbrough begins Bach series 54 55 THE CHILD IN ALL OF US ... 56 57 FIRST ANNUAL OPEN CAMPUS FORMAL Featuring Back Door Rhythm CPEN CAMPlJS rCFAUL Saturday May 12 8pm in Simpson 58 59 Nurses Receive Caps Perhaps one of the most exciting moments for a student who is studying to become a nurse is the moment when that student receives the nursing cap. On Wednesday, Febru- ary 8th, sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students here at ' Southern were given caps in an assembly in Mun- ger Auditorium. The Capping Ceremony is a tradition that goes back to the davs of Florence Nightingale and recognizes the stu- dents ' official entry into clinical nursing practice. The caps are traditionally designed by the institution which the stu- dent attends. The Birmingham-Southern College caps were designed by Professor Tucker in the Art Department. The sophomore level caps are designated as plain white, whereas, the junior level cap has a wide gold band around it and the senior level cap has a wide gold band with a black band in the center. This design recognizes the school colors. At B-SC the nursing cap is to be worn as part of the official uniform in the hospital. Nursing caps, traditionally, were worn as protective devices to cover the hair; now they are svmbols rather than functional. Following graduation, even if a student goes to graduate school, it is the cap that was worn in basic training that a nurse will wear throughout his or her career. — Pam Forsythe 60 61 clunking Anyone? Birmingham-Southern ' s new organization for spehmking. Southern Cavers, has had a bus and exciting year. Students in this group have spent their weekends exploring caves in the area. Stella McCall and the student leaders of this group have made it one ot the fastest growing and most interesting on campus. 62 63 OUIDA B. KINZEY RETIRES? uida Blackerby Kinzey, popular instructor and scholar, was honored by ii friends, colleagues, and students on April 29, 1984 with a reception marking her retirement. The reception included an exhibition of a part of Professor Kinzey ' s extensive work in photography, including prints from her slide presentation Patterns. The College also announced an endowed scholarship in her name. Professor Kinzey ' s love for math and concern for students has made her a favorite at B-SC; she will be missed. But those who know her are certain that retirement will bring new and exciting projects for this warm, enthusiastic human being. 64 HONORS DAY The valedictorians were honored. That could he an American beauty rose or a siuun spring da ' or even the Pieta. However, wiu ' ii Dr. David Johnson utters this phrase, he is referring to a matheuiatical problem. W ith his exclamations of Now isn ' t that beautiful? and Do you believe that? his excitement about mathematics cannot help but spill over to his students — moti ating them and introduc- ing them to the wonder of mathematics. Birmingham-Southern College welcomes Dr. Johnson from Louisiana State University where he had been a professor of chemi- cal engineering for the past twenty-one ' ears. During his career at L.S.U., he published twenty books and forty-two articles dealing with various topics in chemical engineering. Not onK ' is he well- recognized in engineering literature, but he is also revered by his peers. Last year at L.S.U., he won the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award, a teaching honor. In addition to his B. A. in chemical engineering, Dr. Johnson also holds a Masters degree and Ph. D. in applied mathematics. This year the newest member of the mathe- matics department has taught lower and upper level math courses ranging from pre-calculus to calculus I and II to differential equa- tions. In addition to his engineering books, he is also co-author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House. His newest book presents a comical look at funny things said and done in presidential elections from the election of our first President to our fourtieth President. Having always been interested in politics, he chose his topic because he had not seen man - books written on the subject. The New York Times Syndicate bought the rights to his book and will re-print the entire book in five to six installments beginning this coming October. As evident by his latest book. Dr. Johnson ' s interests are not solely academic. In his spare time he enjoys sports but as a spectator more than a participant. His favorite spectator sports are baseball and tennis. In addition, his hobby is collecting old coins. One of his most prized possessions is an 184 9 Dougle Eagle worth twenty dollars until mintage ended in 19.3.3. Anyone who has taken a Johnson course or has one on a future schedule will see that ' Southern is lucky to ha e him! — Karin Johnson I Mrs. Scad Helmi, Assistant Professor in Accounting, was born and raised in Gisa, Egypt. She received her undergraduate degree in Accounting at the University of Cairo, and her masters degree in Business Administration at the University of Michi- gan. Mrs. Helmi joined the facultv ' at Southern this fall as an Accounting professor. She chose a career in teaching because of her love for the academic life. ' iewing her students as serious and above average in intelligence, she feels that her time and resources are effective- ly put to use which accords her much job satisfaction. When asked how she hopes her students will remember her, Mrs. Helmi replied that she wants them to remember her as caring about them, personally as well as academically. She hopes her students gain from her class the self-confidence which comes from knowledge. -Vlrs. Helmi, who came to the U.S. in 1963, says she appreciates the greater freedom and opportunities available to women in this country. When asked about Alabama, she replied that she enjoys the climate and the people; the climate in Alabama is almost identical to Egypt ' s climate, and the people are warm and courteous. Mrs. Helmi likes spending her spare time with her family — her husband and three sons and their German Shepherds, Champ and Crystal. Her hobbies include international cooking, especially French and Chinese, sewing, reading psychology, and listening to music — ranging from Beethoven to Kenn ' Bogers. Students compliment her on her warmth and kindness toward them; her ' door is always open for those wishing to stop by and visit. 189 Dr. Paul Bailey, well-known professor of biology at ' Southern, amazes freshmen and upperclassmen alike each ear as he lectures without any notes. His extensive knowledge of biology, years of experience, sharp organizational skills, and a fantastic memory are some of the factors enabling him to do this. Dr. Bailey has published several books, including the introductory biology text which he used in BI 101 until last year. He is now in the process of publishing another textbook. Human Biology, which will be released within the next year. Dr. Bailey ' s love for biology is accompanied by a keen interest in American primitives, which include artifacts from .Amer- ica ' s past that Dr. Bailey collects. He is especially fascinated by the Civil War and artifacts from this time period. The appeal of American primitives stems from his rural background in Baileyton, Alabama (near Cullman), where he now lives on the farm on whic h he grew up. Dr. Bailey has a down-home friendliness toward everyone, and he expresses an interest in his students that extends beyond the classroom to their interests and concerns. The caring attitude which Dr. Bailey exhibits toward his students is related to his sincere desire not only to teach students but also to stimulate the interests ot students in learning. The way he brings biology to life, so to speak, is a big step toward accomplishing that goal. He is encouraged by those students who are indeed eager to learn, which is why he particularly enjoys freshmen who usually approach his class enthusiastically. — Carol Anderson Mira Popovich, head of BSC ' s Dance Department is originally from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She came to America in 1973 after danc- ing as a soloist for eighteen years with the Serbian National Ballet Company. Mira trained for eight years at the Yugoslavian State Ballet School under Nina Kirsanova, a principle dancer of Anna Pavlova ' s company. Mira made her debut with the Serbian National Company in a production of Faust, and went on to star in the compan ' s production of Swan Lake for over ten years. Although the dual role oi Odette Odile in Swan Lake was her favorite, Mira iiho enjoxed dancing the principal roles in such ballets as Giselle, Esmeralda, and Don Quixote. Mira enjoys the working atmosphere at ' Southern, especialh ' ha - ing a staff that is open-minded and receptive. In her opinion, this is necessary for a liberal arts college. Although she feels that intensive training in any area of the arts can sometimes conflict with the responsibilities of a liberal arts institution, the growth in the Dance Department here at ' Southern gives many talented people a chance at a dance career that they might not have possibly had. Mira is a self-proclaimed optimist. She says dreams are important t o the life of the individual as long as they are balanced with reality. As a child in Yugoslavia during the war, she had to define what was important in her life, and she tries to guide her students with that philosophy. Teaching is fulfilling for Mira; through it she can see the results of her experience and live vicariously through her students. I believe in tomorrow. It ' s sometimes hard to get through today, but I believe in tomorrow. — Scott Musgrove 190 Dr. Barbara Lester, professor of Sociology , joined the faculty of Birmingham Southern in the Fall of 1975. Dr. Lester received her undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and Doc- torate of Sociology from Vanderbilt College. Recently, Lester has completed major research work in the areas of Sociology and Religion. Not only is Dr. Lester an excellent professor, but she is also an involved and a caring friend to her students. Her enthusiasm is communicated to her students in such a way that it soon becomes contagious. Students who have had courses in Criminal Justice, Contemporary Social Problems, or Intro, to Research know this to be true. During the past January interims, she and hubby Dr. Paul Franke have taught a course on the prison systems and prison reform. Dr. Lester is also known for her collection of newspaper article clippings. She seems to be that certain type of pack-rat who cuts out articles and funnies of all sorts of issues religiously. A student can be sure to spot something new tacked on her office door or her bulletin almost every week. She laughingly told her SO 202 class that her house will collapse soon under the weight of all those newspaper clippings. Her students really enjoy this frequent treat, so please keep on clipping. Dr. Lester! During the interview, when asked about her life outside of a classroom, she answered with a grin, Is there a life outside the classroom? However, she did confess that on her days off, she does enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and keeps her youthful physique by jogging. She also enjoys very much restoring and refinishing old furniture. But her and Dr. Franke ' s favorite hobby seems to be cooking, especially experimenting with new recipes with their Wok. She and Dr. Franke may be brown- bagging for lunch everyday but it is rumored that the two of them can cook up a mean dish of Mongolian Beef One of the most important things to Dr. Lester is that her students enjoy her classes and learn to share some of her enthu- siasm. Through her classes and her willingness to just sit and chat, she helps her students to rel ate to others and to their social problems. By incorporating her delightful sense of humor and enthusiasm into her method of teaching. Dr. Lester is able to present social theories and ideas in an enjoyable atmosphere as well as making Sociology classes a truly delightful experience for her students. — Kimi Yim i Did ou know that one of our Birmingham-Southern professors is quite an authority on Latin-America, and the history of Latin- American — United States relations? Well, Dr. William Nicholas is er ' much an authorit ' on Latin-America, and continualK interested in our southern neighbors. In case ou are not familiar with Dr. Nicholas, he mainly teaches recent, American Diploma- tic Histor ' courses; during interim of this year he and Dr. Archer led a group in reading English translations of famous Latin- American literary works. Dr. Nicholas grew up in South Texas, and he believes this is where his interest in Latin-America and its culture began. Mex- ican Americans make up a large part of the population in South Te.xas and are an important minority. Coming in contact with so many Mexican Americans created an interest in their culture and background. Dr. Nicholas furthered his interest b - obtaining a Bachelor ' s Degree in Latin-American History from Trinity Uni- versity. He then went on to graduate school at Tulane Universit ' where he received his Ph.D. in Latin-American — United States diplomatic relations. During his graduate studies. Dr. Nicholas traveled to Guatama- la partly as a student and partly as a tourist. Since then. Dr. Nicholas has traxeled quite a bit. Four years ago, he decided to learn to speak Spanish fluently. In the summer of 1982, Dr. Nicholas went on sabatical to Mexico. He lived with a Mexican- ' ' ?? ,-? ' « Students often wonder about the man wandering around the computer labs who looks like a classical sooth-sayer or Biblical prophet. He mutters at the computers, talks to himself as he thinks, and laughs much when speaking with others. Those who have been fortunate enough to meet him or to take one of his classes recognize him as Dr. Roy Wells, Professor of Religion. Dr. Wells graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 1957 with a degree in classical studies; he received his Ph.D. in 1969 from Vanderbilt University with an emphasis in Old Testament studies. Indian family while studying at a university in Mexico. During Dr. Nicholas ' summer in Mexico, the country was experiencing very difficult economic times. According to Dr. Nicholas, this proved to be an interesting trip. Not only was he able to observe the effect of economic distress on the country as a whole, but he experienced it on a personal level as well. Dr. Nicholas ' wife, Mary Ellen, is a Spanish and French teacher at Homewood High School. They are both interested in the study of Latin-America and its culture. Mrs. Nicholas has accompanied her husband on quite a few of his Latin-American trips, but Dr. Nicholas says she has never taught him Spanish. When Dr. Nicholas is not teaching or traveling, he is still very busy. He is a member of the League of Women Voters, a non-sexist, non-partisan organization. This year he put together two programs for the League of Women Voters. One was on nuclear arms control, and the other was on national security. Along with being a member of the League of Women Voters, Dr. Nicholas enjoys playing the piano and cooking authentic Mexican dishes. Dr. Nicholas has several ideas on present United States-Latin- American policy. He feels that the success of the United States makes it hard for us to identif ' with third world nations such as El Salvador, Nicaraqua, and Mexico. According to Dr. Nicholas, these countries need time to develop, and trying to impose our form of government and policies on them could do more harm than good. He cites a favorite quote to sum up his feelings; Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States. ' — Mary Beth Kiker His recent achievements include an article, Indications of Late Reinterpretation in the LXX of Jeremiah 2LT-23, to be published in Zertschzift fur die Alttestamentliche Wissenschat; he is working on The Massoretic Redaction of Jeremiah. which will be published in the Journal of Biblical Literature. Beyond his professional interests. Dr. Wells has spent much time co-parenting with his wife their three children. During a past phase of his life, he was marginally in ol ed with social activism: issues sur- rounding the Vietnam conflict and civil rights movement, especially the voting rights bill in 1963. In another past phase, he enjoyed photography, a hobby which led him to build two darkrooms; he gave up this interest, though, when he realized that his tastes exceeded his ability. Dr. Wells describes himself and his wife as nomads. They enjoy buying old houses and restoring them. In this process, he has become a second-rate carpenter, plumber, painter, and electrician. Another favorite activity of Dr. Wells ' is traveling. Being lost where no one speaks English is, for Dr. Wells, great fun; he claims to model his lectures on a similar pattern. He likes traveling in Jordan and Israel best because of his taste for wallstumps. Dr. Wells is also an avid movie fan. He complains about the low qualit) ' of today ' s films, but praises the Italian neo-realists and British working class movies which were made in the late 1960 ' s. Perhaps it is Dr. Well ' s love for the screen which calls him back, not only to the theater, but to the computer, where he continues to spend hours writing about old Hebrew and Greek texts. — Don Camp 191 STAGEY PATRICIA ACKER Birmingham.
