They played a variety of music, which everyone seemed to enjoy. ATSI HALLOWEEN PARTY This years ' Miss B-SC contest was a night of glitter, glamour, and talented performers. Lee Peters was crowned Miss B-SC. First runner up went to Cynthia Lamar; second runner up was Patti Wileman; third runner up was Karen Hall, and fourth runner up was Cindy Hartsell. Ml JUMPROPE FOR HEARTS i. - ■ - .... WRITERS ' CONFERENCE Robert Massie CrightJ, author of Nicholas and Alexandra, delivered the opening address of the 1 9B2 Writers ' Conference on October 22-23. The theme for this year ' s conference was Writing as a Reflection of Today ' s Culture. Other keynote speakers were historian Henry Steele Commager, poet Galway Kinnell Cleft], and author William Price Fox. More than 400 people attended the various lectures and seminars of the two-day conference. B-SC DANCE DEPARTMENT The outstanding Dance Department here at B- SD has been performing throughout the year locally, and in other Ala- bama cities. Two of the dancers won Obelisk Awards this yean for ex- cellence in dance, while Mira Popovich — head of the Dance Department won an Obelisk Award for choregraphy. %■ u r(r f irM % KLV ■ ' ; . -ill KSrf ' -XT vr ■. _ ? i Model Senate participants, above, were Delaware Senator Joe Biden and Dr. Floyd Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritus of the U.S. Senate. POLITICS Emory Folmar, a candidate in the Alabama gubernatorial race, spoke at B-SC during his campaign. Folmar, although he lost the race, was the strongest challenger that the other candidate, George Wallace, has ever faced in the governor ' s race. Folmar ' s visit was sponsored by the College Young Republicans. Former White House Chief of Staff, Hamilton Jordan, spoke at ' Southern on November 16, 1 382, as part of the Quest II lecture series. Jordan, once described by the Washington Post as the second most powerful man in this country, talked about the lessons of the Carter years and assessed the administration ' s successes and failures. When asked about his predictions for the United States, Jordan answered that he was fearful of the future of our country because we know so little about the world around us. HOMECOMING ' S3 The theme of this year ' s Homecoming was Mardis Gras, and it was a huge success. A parade was added this yean to the activities, and although it lasted only a few minutes, everyone enjoyed it. The Homecoming game had the biggest turnout of the season, where the Panthers played UAH and won 79- 70. Luanne Goodall was crown Home- coming Queen, Elaine ESesh was Junior Rep- resentative, Margaret Rubio was Sopho- more Representative, and Maria Alder- kneitz was Freshman Representative. HOMECOMING ' S3 INTERIMS IN JAPAN AND ITALY OK SGA ELECTIONS a r J CHAPEL EDUCATION AND CASTLE STUDY ■ M IMI INTERIMS IN EUROPE NURSES ' CAPPING CEREMONY A new department, which has been form- ing over the yeans is the Nursing Depart- ment. This year was the first yean fon this new program, which is wonking in conjunction with Brookwood Medical Center. It has alneady attnacted many new students to B-SC. The rigorous schedule keeps these students busy, and other students are still trying to get used to students weaning white uniforms around B-SC. THE SOUTHERN EVENT The Southern Event, A night of Spec- tacular Entertainment was every- thing it had been built up to be. Russell Levenson and Margaret Ann Rennek- er, the current directors of Phase III, realized that there was alot of talent at B-SC that was going unnoticed. Many students did not get the per- forming exposure they needed. They therefore decided that a night of tal- ent by B-SC students would benefit these students. Singing, dancing, comedy, and acting events enter- tained the audience. SOUTHERN COMFORT WEEK + s:. • tQfiEaAfc - i r m r. «-; % - A) k SADIE HAWKINS DAY 1983 Sadie Hawkins came back to B- SC this year. ATSI revived the Sadie Hawkins Day, which used to be an annual event on the Hil top. There was a carnival with booths sponsored by different groups on campus, a country fair picnic, along with the event of the day, the Sadie Hawkins Chase. Other activities in- cluded a greased pig catch, a Best Legs Contest, and Hot- air Balloon Rides. ZZ BLACK HISTORY MONTH Ml The Black Student Union sponsored Black History Month in February. Dr. Charles Owen spoke on Black Stress. The major- event was a program called The Darken Side of Enter- tainment: Blacks in the Arts. Various areas of en- tertainment, such as Blacks in Film and African Origins were illustrated by songs and spoken commentary. Pictured below are the offi- cers of the B-SC Black Stu- dent Union: Kelvin Ramsey — Chaplain, Tracy Williams — Asst. Secretary, Maxine Ford — Vice President, Duane Parker — Parlimen- tarian, Victor Powell — Treasurer, Tunja Greene — Asst. Treasurer, and Harold Owens — President. M If you ' ve ever complained of never get- ting a picture of yourself in the year- book, you had no excuse this time . . . The Southern Accent yearbook staff decided to try an experiment this year, with a new section. You could sign up and Shoot Yourself for free, get in the yearbook, and get the photo back to keep! We had fun doing it, but never dreamed it would include get- ting a phone call at B: 30 one morning to Shoot a group in the fountain! It was such a success, we ' ll probably do it again next year, altho ' our photogra- phers may get unlisted phone num- bers to avoid B: 30 calls! As students examine is- sues ranging from classical philosophy to contemporary ethical questions in his classes, he tries to make abstract ideas more understandable and practical. His in- tense method of teaching not only interests students in the subject matter, but encour- ages them to think philosophically. Cur- rently, he is doing research in business ethics for a course in the M.B. A. program. During interim of 1 9B3, Franke and his wife, Dr. Barbara Lester, taught a course on the prison system and prison reform. He spent his sabbatical in 1 SB 1 -82 at Boston Univer- sity examining the philosophy of science. In the summer of 1 372, he and Dr. Earl Gos- set lived in Yugloslavia and studied the his- tory of its political system. They also researched Yugoslavia ' s cultural and philo- sophical traditions and the way in which this Western-oriented Marxist country func- tioned. Dr. Franke ' s interests extend beyond the academic field. He is a minister in the United Methoidst Church and sings in the choir at Caunterbury U.M.C. He also performed in Fantastics, a musical done at his church. Listening to classical music and engaging in good conversation are among his favorite pastimes. He enjoys cooking and makes ex- cellent lasagna and salads. When time per- mits, he likes to work with wood, especially building furniture. One of the most impor- tant things to Franke is being able to work with individuals and communicate new and exciting ideas to them. By incorporating this skill into his method of teaching, Franke is able to present philosophical ideas in an en- joyable and fascinating way. Dr. Byron Chew is a relatively new face in the recently expanding Business Administration and Economics Department. He joined the faculty in 1 9BO as the Monaghan Professor of Management. When he is not training students to enter the complex and competitive business world, Dp. Dhew spends some time in the political arena. He currently holds a seat on the Vestavia Dity Council. Dr. David Fraley specializes in European history, particularly nineteenth century Germany. He has travelled extensively in Western Europe. He has even been mistaken for a German by a native German. When he is not expounding on the wonders of the past, he has time to enjoy the music of Al Stewart and help Dr. Sam Stayer with an Interim trip to Charleston. Students return from this trip with many stories about Dr. Fraley ' s active, but very dry [blow the dust away] wit. It seems He also knows just which wine to choose for any occasion. Ann Hamilton, Reference Media Librarian, frequently comes to the aid of distressed students desperately seeking information for papers the day before they are due. She spends much of hen time familiarzing stu- dents with the different opportunities the li- brary has to offer. Her professional interests include serving as secretary of the Alabama Library Association and studying at Emory University in 1 981 during her sab- batical with the assistance of the Mellon Foundation grant. In addition to her voca- tional activities, she is the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Genus Loci, a Sherlock Holmes Group. Ann is deeply concerned about cur- rent social issues. She is a member of the faculty advisory committee for Christians for Social Justice and is treasurer of the Bir- mingham Committee in Solidarity with Cen- tral America. In December, 1982, she went to Honduras to observe the El Salvador ref- ugee camps. Because of her vast knowledge of the library and keen interest in humanity, Ann is a vital part of our college community. Dr. Nancy Campbell-Goymer, assistant pro fessor of psychology, is known among ' South- ern students for her enthusiastic personality and concern for the individual. She received her undergraduate degree from Florida State Uni- versity and master ' s degree and Doctorate of Psychology at the University of Alabama. Nancy served her Clinical Psychology Internship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Not only is Nancy an excellent professor, but she is also an involved member of the col- lege and surrounding communities. She is co- sponsor of Psi Chi, psychology honorary, vice-president of the campus chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and has many study skills work- shops on campus. Recently, Nancy had an arti- cle entitled Academic Contracting with Emotionally Disturbed Children published in Psychological Reports. She serves in the Jef- ferson County Child Abuse Task Force. Nancy is also a member of the American, Southeast- ern, and Alabama Psychological Associations. Students agree that Dr. Nancy Campbell- Goymer teaches psychology in a challenging and interesting way and offers them both her knowledge and friendship. Many ' Southern students describe Dr. Dan C. Holliman, professor of biology, as a teddy- bean. Dr. Holliman combines his kindness with dry wit and subtle humor to make his classes entertaining, as well as interesting; however, his students often suffer severe shock after taking his first test. Outside of class, he enjoys outdoor activities, especially fishing. Each sum- mer Dr. Holliman works at a sea lab in Dauphin Island, Alabama. For 1982-83 he received grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Doastal Area Board of Alabama. In addition to his wildlife interests, he likes reading Henry David Thoreau and serves as director of the interim term. When asked what made him an individual at BSD, Dr. Holliman, true to his char- acter, replied, My students. Dr. Stewart A. Jackson, also known as chap- lain and director of counseling services, adds a special dimension to campus life at Bir- mingham-Southern Dollege. He received his un- dergraduate degree at Auburn University and his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry at Emory University. In addition to giving of his time and himself to the college, he shares his family and many talents. Frequently, Stewart gives students the opportunity to stay with his two daughters and son for an evening. People continue to be thrilled by his infamous frog im- itation. He rejects traditional and popular music and listens to the Prairie Home Companion, a comedy program filled with music for shy per- sons. I Wish that I Was Twins so I Could Love You Twice as Much and Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer are Stewart ' s favorite songs. Dining with Mohammed Ali and watching Rocky Horror with the Wesley Fellowship are his most memorable experiences. Stewart ' s hobbies include weightlifting, reading Woody Al- len, and killing insects that live in the chapel. Though he is called many things, chappie is his favorite nickname. These unique characteris- tics, along with Stewart ' s interest in students, make him a favorite at BSC. !• Cheryl Abraham Brighton, AL Stacey Acker Birmingham, AL Joseph Ackerson Birmingham, AL Theresa Adams Birmingham, AL Diane Ames Birmingham, AL Susan Lee Ames Stone Mountain, GA Arnold Scott Anderson Birmingham, AL Lee Anderson Birmingham, AL Charles E. As we look around we see artists, educators, scientists, historians, linguists, theologians, athletes, and business people. Here, too, we find the peace of the solitude and the happi- ness of laughing with friends. The diversity goes much deeper, though ... to the very heart of each of us as we experience the joy, pain, sorrow and excitement of life. Each of us has brought some dimension to life here; and each of us, in some way, reflects the facets that others have brought with them. In this way, as we live, work, play, and learn together, we grow richer and more complete as indi- viduals. ALABAMA . . .
