LIBRARY OF BIRMINGHAM -SOUTHERN COLLEGE H BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE 5 0553 01001722 3 m β . ' V--j -:.v4iv BIRMINGHAM β the city in Southern ' s backyard β the city which has become one of the South ' s leading metropolitan areas. Its development took hard work and strong determination by those who saw a potential in the land. Not until the late 1 800 ' s did travelers learn the richness of coal and other minerals in the area. It was soon realized that the red rook was high grade iron ore. Thus, the development of a min- ing industry to support the making of steel was en- visioned by those around. The mining of natural resources in Jefferson County had begun, but development was limited by in- adequate transportation. Without a means for trans- porting goods between other cities, industry was un- able to flourish and take full advantage of the area ' s abundant natural resources. It was not until after the Civil War that two major railroads were joined provid- ing the transportation that paved the way for the rapid development of a new city. An increase in mining attracted the attention of the Elyton Land Company. The company soon recog- nized the potential which the Birmingham area pos- sessed. On December 19, 1871, with a population of 1 ,200, the city was officially incorporated. Shortly after the iron boom began, it was signaled that Birming- β l S. -kA. 1 ham was to be a city dependent on the stee industry. Within the city ' s first twenty years, the population Increased to 26,000. In recognition o 451 this increase, the city was given the nick- name The Magic City, This Magic City has grown from 1 ,200 to a thriving metropolis of nearly 500,000. Ma- jor industry remains dependent on the rich- ness of the earth. However, the city has be- come a major center for financial, educa- tional and medical institutions. A full range of recreational activities are now available to area residents and many places of histor- ical interest may be visited. CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES U AM CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES UhM CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES As each school year rolls around, it brings numerous changes for both students and faculty alike. All of these changes are not necessarily visible, Many such changes on campus occur within the lifestyles and rela- tionships of the student body. However, many of the changes at Southern during the 1980-81 school year have been structural ones. The Edward L. Norton Center and the additions to the Hill Music Building are two of the new looks on campus. Renovations have been made in the dorms along with im- provements and construction on the Striplin Field. As well as improving the looks of the school, these stuctural changes will aid in bringing new events and activities to the Hilltop. mi 1 Hl K H 1 Hl t n 1 J . 11 IW Ara ' - Sflfe-. I s? r::LX A YEAR FOR CHANGING As the structural changes on campus are visible, there are changes within the lives of the students v hich are not appa- rent to the human eye. Specifically, the freshman year is a time v hen nevj stu- dents undergo changes in lifestyle and relationships, For many freshmen, col- lege means being away from home for the first time. Leaving a familiar environ- ment and close friends can cause any- one to become homesick. Along with those who are homesick, there are many students who simply do not like their living conditions. With small rooms furnished for two, sharing one of these rooms in itself is a very big change for some. While the dorms may not be like home, this adjustment is soon over- shadowed by the dally shift from home cooking to cafeteria food. As the freshmen experience these changes, he or she is never alone. The minute he arrives on campus, he begins to make new friends. The pledge class, dorm, classroom, library or cafeteria are among the places where those who are sharing these common experiences come to know one another. It is throughout the entire year that the freshman is faced with one surprise after another. Not many of these students were used to paying high prices for books or staying up late at night study- ing; and who was that person who said Dr. Randall ' s courses were crip. At the beginning of the year things seemed rough and sometimes unfair, However, as time passed, the new sur- roundings and friends blended with the campus activities to provide a new world of excitement. Going from home cooked food to oofeteria meals is one of the most dramatic changes any student encounters. Generally, this change is most noticeable to the freshmen; however, each fall the upper level students must once again make the adjustment to the school food. Though Shamrock, Southern ' s food service, is not the worst, one cannot help but tire of the same ol ' meats and vegetables. In search of more satisfying food. Southern students have selected certain Birmingham restaurants as favorites. One such establishment is the Smoke- house. A local truckstop slightly over a mile from campus, the Smokehouse serves an array of fresh meats and vegetables at a reasonable price. At a little higher price and a unique atmos- phere of the 20 ' s, Spats has become a favorite with many Southern students. On the other hand, there are those time s when students simply prefer a hamburger from one of the fast food chains. While the Smokehouse, Spats, and McDonalds are all very different, each establishment offers Southern students a change from the routine of cafeteria eating. 10 As students arrive on campus each fall they see old friends and make new ones. Many of these friendships begin in the dormitories. Birmingham- Southern has six such dorms, three for both giris and guys. As school progresses, these buildings soon become a home away from home. Students soon become accustomed to the dorm room and decorate these rooms to fit per- sonal taste. While ali rooms appear different, they can generally be placed into one of three cate- gories; 1] a color coordinated room, 2] a room with simple decorations or 3} one that decorates with time. The color coordinated room is one with match- ing bedspreads and curtains. The place is always clean with never a messy closet or dust on the dresser; hardly liveable for some. Most of the other dorm rooms are arranged to show the taste of two separate students. To decorate a room the simple way Is to let each roomate do what he or she wants without trying to match each other. The final type of room is created through time. The room never appears to be clean for items such as coke cans and paper gradually accumulate. Follow- ing the law of gravitation, these items have simply fallen where they please. 12 GREEK? One of the most signifi- cant clianges a student undergoes begins wlien he or she decides to join a Greek society. Southern offers its students 12 of these societies; 7 sororities and 5 fraternities, Joining one of these groups means pledging your loyalty to that group, Along with the hard work and fun times, being a member of the Greek sys- tem can mean making life long friendships. , As students have noticed stuctural changes on campus and changes within them- selves, they may not realized the turnovers in the faculty and administration. New depart- ment chairmen are Dr. Thomas GIbbs of Fine Arts, Dr. Dorothy Ward of the Humanities, and Dr. Marjorle Gunter of Business. Aside from these chairmen. Southern has hired several new faculty members. As an exam- ple, the English department has hired three new professors to teach In the areas of American, British, and Renaissance litera- ture. Southern ' s increase In faculty Is a strong step toward furthering the school ' s high academic standards. 15 With the school year conning to a close, seniors are faced with decisions concerning their future. Whether to enter the work- ing world or continue stu- dies in graduate and pro- fessional programs is just one of these decisions. Stu- dents wait anxiously for let- ters of acceptance to schools of dentistry and medicine as well as mas- ters degree programs. The office of Career Develop- ment and the Counselling Center are just two places one can go in times like these. With a little hard work, students can hope to use their skills and talents they have developed while attending Birming- ham-Southern College to find their place In today ' s society. Three nights later, unfortunately, BSC ' s season came to an abrupt end as they bowed out of the District Tournament with a 68-62 loss to Alabama State. James Henderson led thie squad in scoring for the season with a 17.2 average. The senior from Yulee, Flor- ida also eclipsed the 1000 point mark during the regular season. Another senior. For amidst all the changes, there are some things that remain constant and seem immune to change. It ' s hard to imagine a time when B-SC will be without its academicians, its athletes, its beauties, or its preps, a time when cafeteria food will be edible, when dorm rooms will be completely free from roaches, or when an important test doesn ' t demand a week ' s worth of devoted study. 229 230 The time seems years away before the transition to college life will be easy, before making a four-point will be easy, or before falling in love will be hard. There are some things that always will be; there will always be the excitement and disappointment of rush, the satisfaction and frustration of next-to-impossible courses, and the laughter and tears of newly made friendships. There will always be Greeks, intramurals, crazy parties on Fraternity Row, kidnap breakfasts, and candlelightings. There will always be Red-Hot Professors, eight o ' clocks, and lectures that drone on and on. There will always be the hard task of going to class in the rain, and the even harder task of going when it is a sunny spring day. 232 234 M II β I 11 β II New Men ' s 2 fl ' F Annua fio Aore hnomeini ?arfy Les.l.n.l0.mi MM. 2 f c.r Qp.m. ' f ' il Rcfreihmeiili 237 From year to year the campus changes; new dimensions are added, new issues tacl ied, and old problems solved, The faces change at a frighteningly rapid pace. LIBRARY OF BIRMINGHAM - SOUTHpR|N COLLEGE Another school year has come and gone and this book has finally been completed. Those who worked on it often wondered if the many hours of hard work would ever end. Now that the effort is concluded, I can only hope that the product will satisfy the many expectations of those for whom it was created. Our theme has been change and I must mention one more. Every attempt was made to make this a cooperative effort of a staff more fully involved than in recent years. Call it common sense or a fear of going it alone, my new staff of over 15 was called upon to contribute their efforts, insights and creative ideas from beginning to end. I am deeply grateful for their efforts and support, On a personal note, this has been a year of extreme changes for me. Without the help of those staff members who refused to quit when others might and the help of my roommates and friends who pitched in when they could, the job could not have been completed on time. For their supportive attitudes, I am especially thankful. All that remains is to see the finished copy. The staff and I hope the 1981 Southern Accent will be a source of enjoyment and fond remembrances to all who turn its pages. Sincerely, i L--. ' -. -- Mark Sapp Editor 1 slliiiiPliiaiiiS
