There are so many different ideas and interests; it is the variety, the differences in people, that make BSC the very special place that it is. Freedom to be different, to think what you want, and to express yourself openly is freedom to be yourself. SOLITUDE Spare time is something that is very rare at B-SC; even more rare is that time spent alone with oneself. Learning to interact with other people is an integral part oi growing as an individual. Learning to be alone is just as important. Although solitude is rare, many B-SC students have found sanctuaries all their own: in their rooms, by the fountain, at the academic quad after classes, or in some hidden place. CONGLOMERATION m The ability to accept a person and his ideas whether or not your ideas concur is an important part of growth as an individual, a part that takes place during the college years. With Birmingham-Southern ' s variety of people, the school is a perfect setting for such growth. COMPANIONSHIP Everyone needs to be with another person sometime. College is the only time that there is always someone available. We were walking across the quad in a drunken stupor leaning on each other; that was the only way. We ' re so unfamiliar and unaccustomed. We ' re always getting into screwed-up messes that our parents never find out about, but that we have to get ourselves out of. You want to fill life to the brim until you can ' t feel and then you don ' t want to move for fear you ' ll break the surface tension. You get full of ideas, hope, inspiration, and then just sit and feel full. People who say campus life is boring simply lack imagination. They expect entertainment. You ' ve got to make it yourself. These are probably the tenderest times you will have. iIIkJRBI ' ■ One thing that I can say is that I ' ve really matured as an actress since I ' ve been here; you know ii s inspiringjust to be in that building . . . to have the opportunity to be on that stage . . . Arnie Powell and Lynda Linford are simply brilliant. It seems like I never go anywhere fxcept the art building. Every waking loment I ' m workina on somethinsi. or joy. Well, not always; studying either effuses with spirit and vibrancy or smothers. It ' s really exciting to see people breathe in knowledge, and then breathe out kindness, compassion, and understanding — a natural, free respi- ration. I killed an ant walking across my book and it writhed in pain. I felt bad. I get excited when I have an oppor- tunity to relate things learned in school to real life, but my experience is so lim- ited, I can ' t relate too much. Being in school prevents it. The lovely and eter- nal truths imparted by greats of the past are lost on me because I ' m forced to seek only dry words. TTie rigors of my schedule keep me from enjoying them to the fullest. I ' ve been studying like hell. You learn from your contemporar- ies, picking words — gleaning knowl- edge. He sat in class with sleep sticking in the corners of his eyes disgusted with the molecule madness, wondering with a poet ' s gaze what he was doing there. It ' s really fun when we get all together equally, mutually unprepared, throw our arms around each other and scream, ' WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO!?! ' Some are fiippish. some an ibrant. The careful thinkers are th w We were sitting in the Student Center al 4:00 a.m.. . .just talking. We went to see a mo ie. came back, and went into Sna elyto. . . iimm . . . talk. The guard caught us and asked us what we were doing. I guess we lost track of the time. Sitting by the fountain at night is cme of my favorite memories. The fountain ' s a nice touch to the atmosphere on campus. Ii s reall neat sitting in the amphitheatre in the dark with the roses and Martians. We sat out on the bleachers in the amphitheatre the night before graduation. It ' s so cozy when it ' s bucketing rain outside and you can see the campus becoming pock-marked with Once it was raining so hard it looked like gray bars on the windows. 1 could hear recorder music filtering out of the corner window: it seemed almost medieval. If 1 had a rowboat I would love it when it rained. I had two pairs of shoes ruined and one umbrella torn to shreds. ' ■ ' ' ' ■ R._.__ .J mi On days when I don ' t have lab, I Hke to lie beside the fountain and soak up sunshine. It ' s a nice change from the smelly inside of the organic lab, and sunshine doesn ' t eat holes in my clothes either. I like to lie around in the grass, except for the bugs. Whenever I need to get away from j f the mad rush of life, I go and lie down near the chapel and do nothing but watch the clouds go by. We couldn ' t wait until Friday to leave, so we left about midnight Thursday night and drove all night. It felt so good to be baking on the beaches when everyone back at good ' ol B-SC was sweating through Friday classes. It ' s funny that in my P.E. class I ' m ready to pass out after running V-i mile but on the beach I can run ten miles easily. The rhythm of the ocean waves affects me like a truth serum. While we were walking on the beach we told each other things we normally wouldn ' t say. The beach draws you closer. ' ria?,- a .aaife atofoaa -..-i ' Sometimes F ' ll be sitting in class and suddenly be hit by an uncontrollable urge to run out of class, off campus, and out of the city. To me the woods are a revitalizing balm. We canoed through the Bankhead National Forest last Interim. It was just gorgeous. There were these huge ice sculptures dripping off bare, craggy bluffs. We got all wet and almost froze. The next week we all had bad cases of the flu, but it was well worth it. We took off Saturday morning before dawn and made it to Mentone by 9:00 a.m. The snow was powdery and great. It ' s amazing that snow skiing would be only two hours from Birmingham. Walking in the woods during the fall is like walking across a great bowl of Rice Krispies. We sat by the fountain half the night talking. To fall in love with that quaint, essential madness makes you want to speak French. We made a deal not to talk except in French; we looked up words all night and drank wine . . . The practical benefit of an impractical course. I ' m just looking for my M.R.S. Fall is the time for having affairs. Sometimes the affectation and expedience gets almost ludicrous. There are a lot of these transient, cosmetic problems, but they ' re artificial, imposed on the essence of this place — no basis for affection or dislike. This place has an ineffable quality that warrants affection. In spite of the nasty air, it has a lingering beauty that defies words to wrap it with. The trees between Munger and Phillips are always there, always a friend: the gingko, that harbinger of fall and spring, with its sweet ginger smell; the steep hill by the chapel rudely planted with grass with bare roots for stubbing your toes. I ' m not as shocked by the behavior of my fellow students . . . it ' s all so commonplace. You know, when I came to ' Southern I couldn ' t say ' sex ' . Sitting at dinner one night I almost had to leave the room because somebody said ' sex ' . Then I went around for two weeks and would go up to people and say ' sex, sex, sex ' . m i f A « , It ' s funny. Late at night we make idiotic espousals of universal truths and then wake up the next day feeling prosaic, dull, and hollowed out. The purpose of college is to realize the mystery and awe, and respond. It ' s a loss in innocence and a gain in wisdom — not in the sense that we know more but in a measure of humility. I have an affection for the school even though it is nasty in a lot of ways. I enjoy my friends . . . You know, it ' s a really neat idea — a small group of people getting together to grow wise. We ' re here for four years, for fruition, growing, learning. ORGANIZATIONS SGA The purpose of Birmingham-South- ern ' s Student Government Association is to serve the needs of every student on campus. Specifically it represents the students ' interests in entertainment, publications, social regulations, food service, recruitment, and academic evaluations. The SGA is a strong, hard working organization. The success of the SGA lies in the support of each stu- dent which it represents. Each year Circle K sponsors a Blood drive for the Red Cross. This was the second year for the annual ' Red Hot Prof contest. Dr. Hoyt Kaylor won the contest in which all proceeds were donated to the Leu- kemia Society of America. Baptist Campus Ministries PSSO The PSSO — President ' s Student Service Organization — is involved in many areas of college life.
