William Raines Battle, Jr., graduated from Bi- rmingham Southern College in 1930. While at ' Southern he was a member of Kappa Alpha frater- nity, Omicron Delta Kappa, Kappa Phi Kappa, and was a three letter man. Coach Battle received his master ' s degree from Peabody College in 1935, and returned to BSC in 1940 as Director of the newly de- veloped intramural program. Coach Battle stayed at ' Southern until 1949, and then returned in 1952, where he remained until his death in December 1974. Coach Battle was regarded by the college commu- nity as an excellent coach, a dedicated teacher, and a remarkable man. Few people have contributed as much to the college and its high standards and ideals as has Coach Battle. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts . . . William Shakespeare Blow, blow, thou winter wind. Thou art not so unkind As man ' s ingratitude. Thy tooth is not so keen. Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Heigh-ho, sing heigh-ho, unto the green holly! Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then, heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. William Shakespeare BRINKLEY: Q: What is your opinion generally of President Fonl? Well, he ' s no Thomas Jefferson. I think he ' s straight. I think he ' s honest. And it used to be that we took those qualities for granted on- the part of the President. But to be straight and honest nowa- days-that ' s something! The way to be popular with the audience is to put on what they want to hear and to put it on in a way that they like. The trouble with that is that you please one side and antagonize the other. I ' m well aware of it. I deal with it ev- ery day, every time I write a line, write a sen- tence, I can say with almost perfect precision what the complaining mail will say four days later. A NATIONAL POLL For the first time since Athens a govern- ment would know precisely what its people wanted. You know, in Athens they used to go to the town square and vote by raising their hands. It would help give people the feeling of having some say, of being asked instead of al- ways being told. Congress would still have its constitutional powers, of course. It would still vote to pass or not pass laws. But for the first time in their lives, they would know precisely what the people in this district and in every district wanted and didn ' t want. Now I have to think up something. Which is hard work. Ev- erytime I think of something good, then I remember I ' ve already done it. ■f : ' - ■ ■ mm f ; 1 • 1 -i 1 - te - rlSl 7mr ' • — 11 HoKvl . ' -T QUEST II David Brinkley The New York Camerata Trio h mQ m B h r Editor: Rob Paul STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION 104 The Student Government Association exists as the official representative organization of the student body. Composed of students elected from different segments of the campus, the SGA performs a role on the campus which has become more ex- panded in the past two years. It not only employs its lobbying power and its budgeting means to meet the needs of the stu- dents, but also has undertaken to contribute financially to the future life of the college. Student Government is directly engaged in almost all areas of student life including entertainment, publications, social rules, food service, politics, and recruitment. In these functions its members attempt to promote the organization as a dynamic force for students on the campus. 1974-75 BSC Student Handbook 105 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Members of the Legislature Senior Class Representatives . Membership is open to any Bir- mingham-Southern student who is interested in service to the campus and the community. The club ' s projects include spon- soring campus bl x)d drives, working with a slow-learners class at Gibson School, and participating in the American Red Cross Home-a-Month program. Officers are: Phil White, President; Frank Wilson, Vice- president; Rick Turpen, Secretary; Al Smyly, Treasurer; and Terry McElheny, Project Chairman. The Circle K faculty advi- sors are J. Mitchell Prude and Andy Wilson. Mr. Robert E. Palmer is the Kiwanis advisor. TRIANGLE CLUB The Triangle Club is an honorary service organiza- tion composed of thirty sophomore men and women. The members are elected at the end of their freshman year by the out-going Triangle Club members. Criteria used as the basis for selection include outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service to the college com- munity as exhibited during the freshman year. Among the various duties of the Triangle Club are such activi- ties as helping with freshman orientation and registra- tion, and assisting with the high school visitation days. Officers: Tom Porch, President Laurie Howell, Secretary Steve Davis, Treasurer 109 :i -1 m. -.c meC:. BLACK STUDENT UNION The Black Student Union was founded during the fall term of 1972 in order to create a more secure bond between the black students enrolled at Birmingham-Southern College. The Black Student Union was also de- signed to put more black students into the flow of campus and community activities. In total, the purpose of the Black Student Union is not only to make the college more aware of the black student ' s capacity to function for the benefit of the college, but to make the student himself aware of this capacity. Since the fall term of 1972 the BSU has twice given its annual Tribute To Black Heritage Scholarship, which is based on need, academic achievement, and extra-curricular interests. A benefit is sponsored by the BSU each April to secure funds for this scholarship which is given to an incoming black freshman the following fall and spring terms in the hopes of encouraging academic and social excellence. Since its formation, the Black Student Union has succeeded in obtaining a special position for a minority representative in the Student Government Association of BSC. This representative mediates, informs, and negotiates between the two organizations to assure maximum cooperation and a wider span of communication between all the students of Birmingham-Southern College. In the fall of 1974 the BSU, in collaboration with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, sponsored a campus-wide talent presentation that reflected a successful and well spent effort at campus and community communication. Membership in the BSU is automatic and accompanies enrollment into the college. 110 1974-1975 Officers: President-Rondal Glasco Vice-president-Sandra Cooper Recording Secretary-Renee Jackson Corresponding Secretary-Sherry Blaci burn Treasurer-Florence Eldridge Business Manager-Gary Moore Chaplain-Thomas Bentley Program Chairperson-Marcia Rogers Talent Show-October 1974. 111 AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY The Student Affiliate of the American Chemical Society functions for the stimulation of all students and faculty mem- bers interested in the field of chemistrj-. We ' ve tried to put together a professional annual for you, rank amateurs that we are. There are omissions and outright gaps, caused by an early completion deadline and the inability of me and my helpers to be everywhere all the time. Speaking of my helpers, I don ' t want to forget Terrell Finney, Steve Meigs, and David Crowder. I must extend a very special thank-you to Ray Martin and Charles Franklin III, without whose help this annual and my role in it would have been nonexistent. Lastly, there is the one person, my wonderful editor Sally, for whom no words can express my gratitude. Suffice it to say that without her I would have given up very early. Hope you enjoy the scrapbook. Allen Sumner Annual Photographer 255 In any undertaking as large as the creation of a yearbook there are many people who deserve a special thank-you. I would like to use this space to express my gratitude to those people who helped produce the 1975 Southern Accent. I would like to express my appreciation for the coop- eration on the part of the students, faculty, and administration. A big thank you goes to the Southern Accent staff, and to all of the contributing photographers. I would also like to thank Janet Pullen for helping label the underclassmen pictures, and to Janice West for always being there when I needed her-with encouragement and advice. Special thanks go to Ray Martin our yearbook advisor, who was always ready to help. And there is one person without whom the 1975 Southern Accent could not have been produced. Allen Sumner, the yearbook photographer spent an incredible amount of time taking pictures, developing film, and printing the vast ma- jority of the pictures that appear in this book. To Allen and all of the others Thank You! Sally Ripatti Editor 256 LIBRARY OF BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE
