A vital pan of the intellectual life at Birmingham- Southern centers on Dr. Evelyn Wiley. She is a cata- lyst initiating the thought process with her perpetual stream of questions: Did the Roman Empire die a natural death or did it commit suicide? What stopped Cecil Rhodes from annexing the planets? What would you do with the Ottoman Empire? Should China have taken a different course with the West? What are you and what are going to do about the West? What are you and what are you going to do about things? No one can talk to Dr. Wiley without taking stock of the situation and trying to come up with alternatives to all sorts of questions. She is always opening up a new can of beans and, at the same time, leaving one with the feeling that she knows all the answers but would just rather wait for the student to find out for himself. 14
