Life here, though, is set within boundaries of time: September and May, Christmas and Spring, and when the threads of continuity and rapport are broken by absence, short or long, you may never find that same person again. Neither is this the place for permanence nor the time in your life for lasting, and the sadness lies in knowing that the difference from the way it was before is really within yourself. It isn ' t very hard to figure out what to do then; follow the old routine. Everything has waited, conspiring, knowing that you would come full circle back to yourself alone again. Then draw yourself up into the smallest space onto the most easily defended ground. There, still, are the books and the long, long walk across the quad, past the concrete circle where the sun dial used to be, between two ugly build- ings made bearable by the night. I. '
