AUTHORITY COMPETITION BEAUTY EVEN FUN DEDICATED TO Mr. Newman Mantey Yeilding Responsibility, business acumen and devotion are the qualities that Mr. Newman Manly Yeilding has demonstrated during his long career at Birming- ham-Southern College. Since 1926— for thirty-six years — he has rendered distinguished service to the college first as bursar and in recent years treasurer. Mr. Yeilding has always shown great considera- tion in helping all worthy and needy students with their financial problems while they were seeking an education. Furthermore, he has followed the ca- reers of the graduates with keen interest. In every new building constructed on the campus he has had an important part in every financial campaign launched since 1926. For his many accomplishments, for his abiding interest in the church, for his civic interests and for his personal integrity, we respectfully dedicate the 1963 edition of the SOUTHERN ACCENT to Mr. Newman Manly Yeilding. 10 ■■«S S ' ««  !W!« N M. Howell Raines, Business Manager; Bruce Hulberg, Editor 7A 1963 SOUTHERN ACCENT Contracts, picture schedules, copy deadlines, page lay-outs, choice of theme and dedication, ad sales — all these and many more factors enter into the production of a school annual. THE SOUTH- ERN ACCENT, employing a small and well-trained staff, attempts to synthesize these mechanical ele- ments with the activities and lives at Birmingham- Southern to produce a lasting pictorial documenta- ■tion of and for the college community. The staff this year has cut the campus as a whole. Perhaps we have been too cutting in some cases and not cutting enough in others. Whether what we have done in the 1963 SOUTH- ERN ACCENT is acceptable or not can only be de- cided by you the students. We hope you will accept this annual for what it is — a conscientious effort to p ortray Southern ' s past year of events in a light- hearted vein. In addition to strictly news items the NEWS con- tained commentaries on current events, essays of fashion, social tidbits, humor, weekly calendars of events, stories on intramural and intercollegiate ath- letics. The major innovation of the 1962-1963 staff was the publishing of an eight-page paper alternat- ing with a four-page paper. ■PP jjg,, s PAT OHNICH, EdItor-ln-Chief L. to R.: Ann Middleton, Pat Ohnlch, Kathy Savage Pat Bolle, George Sutton r STAFF Pat Ohnich Editor Lynn Luther Business Manager Pat Bolle Feature Editor Chris Waddle Managing Editor David Franks Sports Editor Louis deTurro Photographer Staff: Kathy Savage, Rosanne Harpe, Leon Mor- gan, Jane Blackerby, Don Dicie, Ned Killian, Richard Weaver, Bill Bostick, Barry Wertz, Bruce Johnson, Martha Johnson, Elizabeth Willis, Bill Barnard, Peggy Harrison, Melinda Kerr, Ann Mid- dleton, Kay Caufield. 77 QUAD . . . As the following sheets are the painful elabora- tion of many years, when my language or positions shall, in a casual perusal, seem absurd (and such cases may be frequent) I request the reader to seek some more creditable interpretation. This modest request by an obscure writer of the preceding century, Alexander Bryan Johnson, is the request that Quad and its mimeographed stepchild Blurb make of their readers. Although Quad has no vast heirarchy of staff members and no imposing budget, the finished magazine represents long and serious effort, by the editors, and especially, by the contributors. Quad for 1962-63 will live up to the quality of preceding years — and hopes that its hon- est effort will be given the most creditable inter- pretation concomitant with intellectual honesty. Some of their functions are spaghetti suppers, State Conventions, and a dinner for all Baptist students. WESTMINSTER FELLOWSHIP The Westminster Fellow- ship meets each Tuesday in the Independent Room in Stockham. We enjoy supper meetings every other Tues- day. Our missions include Ketona County Home, which we visit the second Sunday of each month, and the Tal- ladega Children ' s Home, which we visit in the fall and spring. Ensley High- lands Presbyterian Church is our host church. We have a coke party each quarter, as well as picnics, a pancake supper with very excellent programs and group discus- sions. Ian Sturrock is presi- dent. 93 PRELAW SOCIETY The Birmingham-South- ern Pre-Law Society was formed through the coopera- tion of interested students and faculty. Membership is open to all students of Bir- mingham-Southern College who are interested in lav as a profession. The purpose of the Pre- Law Society is to promote and encourage pre-legal study at Birmingham-South- ern College, and to increase the students ' understanding of law and of the legal pro- fession. The president of the or- ganization this year is Hu- bert Grissom. DEBATE SQUAD The Debate Squad started the year with trips to Mer- cer and Emory, and with participation in the Birming- ham Invitational Tourna- ment, which was co-spon- sored with Howard. In the winter, they made a trip to Florida State University. This spring they are hosts to the Harvard College Debate Team in a debate held on the Birmingham-Southern campus. f N -ii « -ifn COLLEGE CHOIR Under the direction of Mr. Raymond Anderson and Mr. Sam Batt Owens, ' Southern ' s choir is a very necessai-y part of campus life. The entertaining convocation programs, the annual Christmas program, and the beautiful anthems prepared for special occasions are a fevf of the activities which make the campus proud of the choir and its members. Because of its fine reputation the choir is enthusiastically received by churches and schools on its annual choir trip. In the past few years the choir has travelled widely throughout the South. This year Tom Gibbs is the president of the choir. 95 PANHELLENIC COUNCIL The Panhellenic Council is composed of two representatives from each of the sororities on campus. They serve to promote friendly relations, formulate plans for organized rush, and supervise other policy matters relating to sorority life. Rush is opened in the fall with a Panhellenic tea for all new girls. The Council under the guidance of Mrs. Robert Cothran prepares information to be given to all girls going through rush. Kay Smith is this year ' s Panhellenic President. 96 % iS cx. INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL The Interfraternity Council functions to promote friendly relations among the fraterni- ties and to set up rush regulations. The group is composed of two members from each of the seven fraternities on campus. This organization meets each week and Gerald Ganus is this year ' s President. 97 And The BEAUTIES MISS OUTHERN ACCENT PAGEANT 100 ' f f Hubert Gives Instructions For Tiie Beauty Wallc ' . . . Our Company is proud to use it as its trade- mark. Men to remain free must provide security for themselves and their families and most Ameri- can families have found life insurance to be the best way to provide this security. Liberty National Life Insurance Company is providing a large measure of security for many families. Over a third of a billion dollars is held by the Company for the protection of policyowners.
