. LIBRARY OF J BIRMINGHAM- JTHERN BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE 5 0553 01001652 2 ArcliiV ?3 The f outhern Accent 1956 ■P X- 1 ■A i ' . 1 ? ] I, DEDICATION ... To all the students who never made Mortar Board or 0. D. K., or the Student Council . . to all the students who were never greeks, or preachers, or independents ... to all the students who were never presidents of any group ... to all the students who quietly came, quietly went, and quietly changed the world, we dedicate this annual . . . ' Thy walls have fallen, Thy once-tilled fields lie fallow. Thy very world los died. But thy halls forever will echo the sounds of spring. Man can ask no more of bis castle. This is where it all began, once upon a century . . . Take an old and proud university struggling to re- cover from Civil War wounds; add to it a small city- bred college with the brashness of youth; mix well with Methodist guidance. Keep the mixture on a wind- swept hilltop overlooking a smoggy valley for a few years. Age it with fire, sun, rain, and money. The result will be a college like Birmingham-Southern. For one hundred years, students have come and gone, playing their parts, speaking their lines and making their exits. This annual is the story of the 1956 edition of a never-ending play full of students, faculty, grades, knowledge, diplomas, and memories. To all those who enter here we say, Welcome to the Hilltop. 1 PRODTCTION CREW What ' s a non-lab science . . . Where can 1 get a transcript? . . . How do 1 complete my registration? . . . But what is there I can take next quarter? . . . How much this time? ... No matter what the question, there is some one to answer; a mem- ber of the faculty perhaps, or in the Bursar ' s Office . . . one of the first things a freshman learns is the old maxim: If you want to know anything about the Hilltop, ask Mr. Glenn or Mrs. Hale ... the second thing a student learns is that his adviser is his best friend and, incidentally, one of the most important elements of our ploy . . . LEE GETS ADVICE and settles his bill in the one place visited by every student ... the Bursar ' s Office. n f- w THE PRODUCER Dr. Guy E. Snavely returned to the Hilltop to act as president. Dr. Snavely, already chancellor of the college, come back after the resignation of George R. Stuart. Dr. Snave- ly was Southern ' s president from 1921 until 1937. His return is particularly significant in this centennial year . . . THE Dean Henry T. Shanks works with students and faculty to keep the learning process work- ing smoothly. It is his job to weed out those who foil and to congratulate those who suc- ceed. Without him, the Hilltop would lose a great deal of its Southern accent and gentility. HENRY T. SHANKS Dean of the College DIRECTORS N.M. YEILDING Treasurer of the College The tremendous task of paying the cost of operating a college is the chore of N. M. Yeilding. Mr. Yeilding has been associated with the college long enough to be an intergral part of its scene. Without him, there would not be much of a Hilltop. 11 PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS People make the college what is it and the faculty, in spite of the opinion of some students, are people. They are the most human of all the inhabitants of the Hilltop be- cause they remain when most of the students leave. The faculty are always willing to help a student with o problem; they laugh at the same jokes; they like many of the same things in life. In general, they ' re the greatest. 12 ! The show opened with the AOPi chorus line and included a little of everything, including ballet, both legitimate and the Hurt-Looney ver- sion. Master of Ceremonies Looney, himself a candidate, kept the show moving smoothly. Mr. Hilltopper was indeed a showcase for ' South- ern ' s most talented youngsters. Candidates for the title, shown opposite with Gloria Spruill, lucky girl, were: Dick McClung, sponsored by Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Allen Per- ry, Theta Chi; Dan Roper, Pi Kappa Alpha; Richard Lee, Kappa Alpha; Bob Bowker, Independent Women; Charles Graffeo, Gamma Phi Beta; Don Paty, Alpha Chi Omega; Gor- don Alford, Kappa Delta; Joe Bled- soe, Theta Upsilon; Harold Fought, Zeta Tau Alpha; Barry Anderson, Pi Beta Phi; Grady Looney, Alpha Tau Omega. AND FOLKSY artfully arranges a group shot ...THE FINALE... Actually the play does not end with gradua- tion. The only difference between an ending and a beginning is the viewpoint. Commencement, then, is only the beginning of another act — not the finale. The play will run as long as there is a cast available. Faces may change, but the plot does not. Students will come, frightened, a little less than mature, and not quite sure where they are going. They will gather in the Bookstore, fight valiant battles with the registration system, be persecuted by professors, encouraged by ad- visors, and led astray by their friends. They will pump nickels into the jukebox, complain about the cost of college, sleep through Convocation, laugh at a Cat ' s Paw joke, fall in love with a pickled frog, and possibly learn to ploy bridge. They will wonder how Cafeteria food and Book- store coffee got that way, how they can obtain ping-pong equipment without a deposit, and how they will ever be able to reach their mailboxes. Their uniforms will range from sloppy joes, jeans, and saddles, to shirts, jeans, and loafers; their hair styles from crews and poodles to long-hairs and page-boys. They will order Commencement invitations, mail them two days after graduation. They will leave a little less frightened, a little more mature, and perfectly certain of where they are going. We do not know what the second hundred years will bring for the Hilltop. We will leave the prognoses to those who know more about such things.
