The Panthers last year did not mount dizzy heights of victories, but they performed in 1928 as probably the best football eleven the Hilltop has had in several seasons. Attacking the most difficult schedu ' e they had ever found, the Panthers won three, lost two, and tied four. What may be termed as the lone failure of the year was the inability to break the Howard jinx and beat the Bulldogs in the annual city classic. Truly it was Southern ' s greatest campaign on the gridiron. The Panthers tied Centenary, the undefeated eleven of 1927, and one of the outstanding S. I. A. A. teams in 1928. The Panthers defeated Mississippi College, who finished second in the association chase and who was the only loop member to beat Chattanooga. Southern ' s win over the Choctaws was the first setback for Mississippi College in two years. Two other feats stand out as high-water marks of the 1928 campaign. Birmingham-Southern held the University of Chattanooga, S. I. A. A. champion, to a score of 12-6, the closest count to which the Moccasins were held in the association with the exception of Mississippi College. The other feat was the Panthers ' victory over Auburn, the first in history over the Plainsmen. There are some other footprints that mark the 1928 Panthers as the best Southern ever claimed, despite their inability to win more than three games. Coach Gillem ' s gridmen were outplayed only once during the entire campaign. Chattanooga was the lone exception, and twice in that 81 Captain Bartlett Alternate Captain Ogle Captain-Elect Smith Alt. Capt.-Elect Battle clash the Panthers had the game in their hands, only to flivver at critical momenta and permit ' Nooga to take a bare decision. Another sparkling feature of the 1928 season -was the fact that the Panthers placed three players on the composite AIl-S. I. A. A. selection, picked by coaches from all sections of the associa- tion. Billy Smith, quarterback and captain-elect for 1929; Bill Battle, tackle and alternate captain- elect for 1929, and Shorty Ogle, giant end, were the three honored Panthers. Southern placed only John Bartlett on the All-S. I. A. A. team year before last. And, too, the 1928 Panthers accomplished all these feats in the face of heavy handicaps in ,« l.i- t, , . i4s4 C 82 O.- Manager Dill Stricklan ' d Barnes FiNNEV 83 LOTT Sargent McCULLOUGH Waller 84 Neipp COSHATT Duncan Cloiielter the form of continual injuries. First it was Harris Stephens and Chink Lott to be crippled for several games. Then it was Jack Finne ' to go out again, and then return for another injury. Later Birmingham-Southern lost its captain in John Bartlett for several games, but he managed to slip back into the finale with Howard. Another cripple was Pedro Black, smashing sophomore fiankman, who was hurt twice during the season. Other minor injuries were too numerous to mention. Jenks Gillem celebrated his return as head coach of the Panthers by sending his men into victorj ' over Auburn as the opening shot of the season. Southern trimmed the Plainsmen by 6-0 in 85 Cranford Mann Stephens Carter a night game at Montgomery. Jack Finney and Norman Pilgreen were the stars of Southern ' s first win in history over Auburn. The Panthers outplayed their foes by aggressive football all the way. Southern then opened its home season by defeating Millsaps at Legion Field, 12-0. The Majors came up out of the Delta State with one of their best elevens in history, the Majors having tied Mississippi College and defeated Spring Hill, conqueror of Howard. Billy Smith was the hero of this victory, the 1929 captain-elect galloping thirty-five and forty yards for the two touch- downs. He made both of his pretty sprints in the last half. U King PiLCREEN McNeese COREIN It was in the next appearance that the Panthers really thrilled the hometown fandom. The University of Chattanooga came down into Birmingham with a great eleven, but the men of Coach Gillem did not give way under the strain until the last tivo plays. Chattanooga won, 12-6. The Panthers scored in the third period, after Captain Bartlett blocked a punt, Pilgreen ripping the ' Nooga line to threads with two bucks from the 16-yard line. It was the first time in 1928 that the Gillems had yielded a point. Then it was that Birmingham-Southern began to ring up a string of draws. First it was Marion at Selma, 7-7 ; then Mercer University at Macon, 20-20, and Centenary at Birming- ham, 0-0. Only a few regulars were taken to the Marion game, while only four regulars 87 O ' Brien ' Black SUMMERFORD Rice finished the Mercer battle. The Panthers were in fairly good trim for the Gentlemen, who were outplayed by the Methodists. Pilgreen, Battle, and Waller starred against Marion. Smith and Lott stood out against Mercer. All the Panthers played brilliantly against Centenary. Southern ' s next move was to invade the Delta State and defeat Mississippi College, 19-7. First downs were eight for Southern and two for the Choctaws. The Panthers excelled the Chocs by far in the air, and the Panther line was unbreakable. Smith, Ogle, and Lott were the luminaries. Southern then invaded Mobile and tied Spring Hill, 0-0, upon a sea of mud. Smith, Pilgreen, and Ogle starred in a game that Southern mastered but did not win. Then came the Marne of football. Howard captured it, 13-12, in as narrow a football game H-: f 1 ' Ware Tucker Martin Jenkins as they ever stage. The Panthers outplayed the Bulldogs everywhere except line bucking. Howard ' s two touchdowns resulted from Davis ' sprint after recovering a fumble and from Bullard ' s 4g-yard dash through tackle. Passes brought Southern to the front several times, air attempts bringing about both Panther touchdowns. A toss, Smith to Ogle, climaxed the opening drive, which was first inaugurated by Smith ' s 36-yard gallop just before the first half closed. Ogle ' s catch was the most spectacular ever seen in Legion Field. Southern ' s second touchdown came in the final quarter when Billy Smith again broke loose with some accurate passing. He tossed twice to Waller for thirty-three yards, then to Ogle for ten, and climaxed it with another to Lott, who fell across the goal line. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Entering the season with a paucity of material, both in number and in size, Coach Doc Newton and Ben Englebert were faced with the problem of whipping together a combine of sufficient strength to compete with the Rat elevens of Alabama, Chattanooga, Auburn, and Howard. Opening the season against Auburn the Cubs lost, 25 to 2, on the home grounds of the Infant Tigers. A strong line attack, interspersed with some severe aerial thrusts, caused the downfall of the Hilltoppers. Next on deck was the Southern Military Academy game, at Greensboro, Alabama. Flashing a consistent line-crashing game, the Southerners won, 6-0. Following the S. M. A. go, the Kittens returned to their lair on Sunshine Slopes, there to remain for the remainder of the season. One week later they took on the University of Chatta- nooga Rats in Munger Bowl, losing 13 to 7, even though they almost doubled their opponents in the matter of first downs. Alabama came to the Slopes two weeks prior to the Howard tilt, and whipped the Cubs, 44 to 13, in a spectacular exhibition of football. An unerring passing attack counted for the greater part of the Crimson touchdowns. November 9 the Panther Cubs journeyed out to Berry Field to take on the Howard Bullpups in the annual frosh classic of Birmingham, and upset the East Lake eleven, 6-0 — the first time a Hilltop Rat aggregation has turned the trick. Which feat, according to tradition, gives them a successful season. Doc Newton ' s Cub footballers opened the 1928 season against the Auburn Rats, losing 25 to 2 on the home grounds of the Baby Tigers. Following the Auburn go, the Cub mentor carried his proteges to Greensboro, Alabama, for a tilt against the Southern Military Academy team. After a hard-fought battle the Hilltoppers won, 6-0. Returning to their home lair, the Kittens prepared for the Chattanooga freshman aggregation, vhich combine was met a few days later. The Cubs outplayed their rivals, but lost on the breaks, 13-7. The University of Alaabma Freshmen were the next opponents of the Cubs. The two teams met on Munger Bowl, and after a spine-tickling exhibition the Crimsons were declared vic- torious, 44 to 13. Finally came the Howard Bullpup clash. Playing heroically, the Cubs upset tradition by wal- loping the East Lakers, 6-0, the first time in the history of the two schools that a Hilltop first- ' ear eleven has turned the trick. So, according to tradition, the season w ' as an eminently success- ful one for the Cubs. 90 Class Football Class football was again placed on the sport calendar in ' 28, and brought with it unprecedented student interest. In the first game of the series the Frosh trampled the Seniors by a score of 13 to 6. McNeill scored on a pass on the final play of the game to save the upper classmen from a shutout. Sanders and Moore starred for the winners, while McLendon was a mainstay in the Senior line. Next on deck was the Junior-Soph clash, which was won by the Sophs, 12-0, the four horsemen of the second-year team proving too strong for the opposition. Griffin, Waller, and Cleveland galloped for long distances to give their fellows a deserved victory. A spell of bad weather, coupled with an outbreak of influenza, necessitated the calling off of the final game for the championship of the Hilltop. 91 m ' Jc;- TAie BASEBALL Varsity baseball in 1928 reached heights never excelled at Birmingham-Southern. Coach Huntley ' s edition of diamondeers last season swept down through the final stretch of a torrid campaign to nine consecutive victories and consequently to the S. I. A. A. champion- ship. The Panthers captured twelve contests in fourteen starts during the season, not los- ing a series and dropping only one game each to Howard College and the University of In- diana. In registering the marvelous triumphs, the Birmingham-Southern machine spurted out at the finish as one of the best baseball collegiate teams below the Mason and Dixon line, some experts going so far as to say that the Panthers in several departments outclassed the Auburn Tigers, who won the Southern Conference title, to nialce it two crowns for Alabama in one year. One game behind ui the city college series, and without an S. I. A. A. victory, the Pan- thers took the field at Munger Bowl just be- fore niidseason and walloped the Howard Bull- dogs decisively, 12-1. Two more triumphs were scored in rapid succession over the Bap- tist rivals, and then it was the tour down through Mississippi that shot the Huntleymen into the final drive with a fighting spirit that was never checked. Coach Huntley was parading around dia- monds in the Delta State, where he had per- formed himself while playing for Millsaps. His Panthers defeated Mississippi College twice in two days and they scored a pair of other victories over Millsaps on the two fol- lowing days, two of which went into extra innings before reaching a verdict. Then it was that the Huntleymen returned to Munger Bowl and snapped a twelve-game winning streak of the Centenary Gentlemen. The Louisiana gents of Mike Norton had lost 92 only one game before invading the Magic City, but the pupils of the former Panther went down for two counts before the battling Hunt- leymen, thereby climaxing a brilliant season for Hilltop Heights with nine successive vic- tories. The University of Indiana was the first foe en the 1928 schedule. The Hoosiers were de- feated easily by Birmingham-Southern in the opener, but the Northern crew trimmed the Panthers in the second contest. Coach Hunt- ley took his Panthers down to Clarion for their next appearances, and they snatched a pair of decisions from the Cadets. Returning home, the Huntleymen then played their final medi- ocre game in dropping a 7-6 decision to- How- ard before hitting their triumphant stride. Eight of the twelve victories were regis- tered on diamonds of opposing teams in 1928, six of which were out of Magic City. Coach Huntley ' s men did not lose a game on the road. Incidentally, Coach Huntley established a feat in road victories that will probably stand for a long time. During his last two seasons, Coach Huntley carried the Panthers into bat- tle twenty times on foreign diamonds, and six- teen of them were triumphs for Southern. Harold Beagle was the shining light at bat last year, the keystoner finishing with a .509 hitting clip. It was the swatting ability that put so much power in the Panther attack last year, the Huntleymen hitting .328 as a team. Eight of them went above the .300 mark, and two of them were beyond the .400 rate. It was the brilliant late-season showing of Shorty Ogle that pulled the Panthers into the forefront, the elongated Panther hurling four victories during the final week of the cam- paign. Coach Ben Englebert ' s freshman diamond- eers last year failed to beat the Howard Col- lege Bullpups in the annual rat series, but the Panther Cubs of 1928 give premise to lend strength to the varsity Panthers this year. 93 rTENMS Southern ' s net artists broke even in the 1928 campaign, winning four contests and losing a liive number. They defeated Howard, Sewanee, Mississippi College, and Columbia Theological Seminary, and lost to Alabama twice, Vanderbilt, and the University of Chattanooga. Chilli ' Greene, Clare Barclift, Herman Aufdehaar, and Hyron Gibson composed _the varsity four of ' 28. Barclift performed in the dual role of manager and player, while Greene captained the Hilltop netmen. All four played brilliantly at intervals during the ' 28 season. The freshman team, made up of Irving Beiman, Gilbert Miller, John Casey, and John Harbour, lost their only matches of the year to the Alabama freshman team. One match was played by the Cat netters in the fall of ' 28, in which Columbia Theological Seminar ' was beaten, 6-0. VARSITY In his first campaign of coaching varsity ' basketball on Hill- top Heights, Ben Englebert started his Panther quintet out on the road to eight rapid victories in the first nine games of 1929. Until this goes to press, Birmingham-Southern ' s quintet had been defeated only by the University of Chattanooga, a team coached by Harold D. Drew, former Panther mentor. Leading the Gold and Black cagers on a week ' s tour through Tennessee and Virginia to start the season. Coach Englebert piloted his quintet to four triumphs and one loss on the extended invasion. Returning home to make their local debut, the Panthers quickly reeled off four more wins in succession. These rapid-fire victories placed the Panthers in a top-notch position to oust the Bo ' s ' Club Comets as city champions of Birmingham. Howard had not been met, however, while the B. A. C. Blues also were to be played later. Southern opened the campaign by beating Tennessee Wesleyan easily, 42-18. Lin- coln Memorial was trimmed the next night only after two extra periods of play, when Brand Currie sank the winning basket, 37-35. Then the Methodists clipped off a 95 COACH ENSCeOERT ' • o w sur MEftPORo 1 1 -! ' 5 Ti ' BARCUIFT 39-27 win over Maryville College and a 32-25 victory over Emory and Henry College. It was the following night that Chattanooga momentarily checked the Panthers to the tune of 37-29. Birmingham-Southern made a successful debut before Magic City fandom by defeating the Y. M. H. A. quintet, 36-29. But it remained for the next game to bring the Panthers into their peak of early-season play, overwhelming the champion Boys ' Club Comets by a wide margin, 45-25. Southern College, of Lakeland, Fla., was the next victim of the Panthers, marking the first S. I. A. A. victory for Coach Englebert ' s machine. The invading Moccasins were beaten in the last three seconds of play when Pedro Black tossed a short field basket after the big sophomore guard had plaj ' ed a wonderful defensive game all the evening. The score was 33-31. Then came another thriller. This time it was the Central Y. M. C. A. that fell before a spectacular finish by Birmingham-Southern. The Redbirds had gripped the lead most of the way until the closing minutes, when the Panthers broke loose with a volley of baskets from midcourt to snatch victory from the fire. Southern triumphed by 37-34- Little Hot O ' Brien had been the great scoring star through the first nine games. The midget Dadeville demon often shot 16 and 18 points, even totaling 14 tallies 96 u M4NEIL-1- when he had an off night against the Y. M. C.A. But it remained for Pedro Black, powerful soph guard, to display defensive skill. He had been the tower of strength on defense in all cf the games. Captain Neipp was having a great spree also. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Starting slowly, but gaining momentum as the season progressed, Birmingham- Southern ' s freshman basketeers were far off down the 1929 calendar with good success as this goes to press. Doc Newton was coaching the Panther Cubs, who had been coached by Ben Englebert previously. The frosh opened the campaign in defeat, dropping a 17-7 game to Mortimer Jordan High, winners of the Prep League championship, the district and state prep crowns last year. Smarting under defeat, they came back and captured the next four successive games in the Prep League downtown to tie Simpson for leadership. Besides beating Warrior and Dora High Schools, the Hilltop yearlings also de- teated Howard College ' s rat quintet in their first meeting cf the 5 ' ear, 30-23. Then the Cubs followed this up with a five-point victory over Simpson, 29-34, to knock the Tornado into a deadlock with the youthful Panthers. Briscoe and Hopping were stars of the early games for Coach Newton ' s five. 97 ==:i =i RACK The Panther lightly-clads won two of the trio of meets par- ticipated in during the season of 1928. Opening the season against the University of Alabama Crim- sons, the Hilltoppers were unable to stem the Tide, being im- mersed in a flood of points. The score was: Alabama, 65 ; Bir- mingham-Southern, 433 2- Hugh Ogle ' s leap in the pole vault set a new Southern record at eleven feet. Alabama ' s superiority in the field events accounted for the mar- gin of victory. Following the Alabama battle, the Panther cindermen journeyed up into the mountains of Middle Tennessee, where they met the Union University team. Drew ' s proteges displayed an unquestionable superiority, winning 69 to 43. Shorty Ogle starred, accumulating 22 points during the afternoon. Included in his total were firsts in the broad jump, pole vault, and discus. Chink Lott continued his brilliant sprinting, winning the century and 220 dashes. Bob Sudderth again demonstrated his ability as a quarter-miler by winning the furlong in fifty-four seconds, on an exceed- ingly soft track. Bailey won the half and mile in leisurely fashion, while the Southern relay team beat the Union quartet decisively. Last en the Cats intercollegiate menu was the three-cornered meet with Howard and B. A. C. for the cinder championship of Birmingham. Birmingham-Southern won after a strenuous session on the bowl. The final score was: Southern, 58; B. A. C, 39; 98 Howard, 29. The Bulldogs failed to show a cinder combination that could compete with the Panthers, and were left far in the rear in the pointage. Sandwiched in between the intercollegiate tilts were two other cinderfests — the inter-frat track meet and the IVIay Day Carnival. Competition was keen in both, and the marks produced in the two meets were excellent. Theta Kappa Nu won the former by a narrow margin, while the Juniors triumphed in the inter-class races by a large margin. At the conclusion of the season the following men were given letters: Sudderth (captain). Ogle, Bailey, McKinney, Lott, Thompson, Travis, AIcLendon (manager), and Fullbright. CROSS-COUNTRY The cross-country team of ' 28, captained by Dave Griffin, experienced a fairly suc- cessful season. The Cooper Road Race, a dual affair with the Capstone lightly-clads and the Southern Methodist Road Race were the three events participated in by the distance men. In the Alabama meet the Hilltoppers battled gamely to tie the University harriers, 18-18, while in the Atlanta race the Southern five placed third in a field of seven teams. Griffin and Bailey were the outstanding performers on the squad. This pair, Ralph Henderson, McNeese, and Wallis were awarded letters for the ' 28 season. Dave Griffin copped the Cooper Road Race with Wallis and McKain placing second and third. 99 B Club Clay Bailey Dave Griffith Richard Wallis Ralph Henderson OsLER McNees Robert McKinney Mac Olin Travis Porter McClendon Edgar Moore Lee Thompson Norman Pilgreen William Smith Hugh Ogle John King William Battle Travis Black Leslie Waller Ernest Neipp Joh n Bartlett Jack Finney Edgar Lott Charles Dill 0.
