EMM! L!'fff foreword After the noise is gone and the debris is cleared away, Birmingham will stand as a showplace of beautiful, modern buildings. The old buildings, to which we have become attached, will be shipped away. Nothing will be left but their memory. Part of the tremendous spirit that we hold is gener- ated by these old structures themselves. We alternate between complaining about the buildings and defending them against the derision of other schools. However, in the near future we will be proud of our buildings as well as our achievements and our teams. Just as we watch our new school being transformed from a blueprint to a reality, we blueprint our goals today and build them into a reality with the success of tomorrow. Today's seniors are the builders of tomorrow's world. Their thoughts, their ideas, and their plans will help to determine the future of our country and our world. f ' AZEQM'-1 J 'Q g,!X 'f A 4 1 ' L A vc 1-fir f , cw ff . Being able to serve in such an outstanding high school is a privilege which few receive. May all of you upon leaving Birmingham maintain your tremendous spirit which will undoubtedly help you to reach the high standards you have achieved here at Birmingham. PRINCIPAL: Mr. Thomas D. Parry This school year saw the commencement of the first phase of our long-awaited building program. We have watched eagerly the slow and tedious work of preparation of the grounds, installation of utilities and supplemental services, construc- tion of foundations and concrete slabs, and the erection of the super-structures. Similarly, students graduation from Birmingham High School have, through time-consuming and sometimes tedious processes, laid the ground work and foundations upon which they will build their futures. For new buildings, as well as students, the basic framework is of the utmost importance. To strengthen this foundation for students, several new phases have been introduced in our educational program. This year's graduates are the first to meet the increased graduation requirements and the more exacting major sequences. The new approach in the Foreign Languages, the modern Mathematics, additional Science offerings, and requirement of work in the Fine and Practical Arts indicate that today's students are attaining a well-rounded educational experience. We hope that on this foundation each student will be able to build a life in which he can have pride and satisfaction. 34 '13 X qzqiyx . - , X f G wfazx I ' S. Yuif f frm' 'Wh . Voting for class colors, choos- ingithe name and motto, elect- ing officers and getting sweaters are the beginnings of that last year in High School. The Senior Prom, with the crowning of the King and Queen are highlights of the year's activities. Then the Play Day and the friendly competition among the teams, puts all A12's back in their childhood: Riding tricycles, tossing eggs and enjoying a game of tug-o-war. Looking toward the future and making plans 'is all part of that year. Then the Candlelight Dinner signifies that graduation is nearing. Next comes the time to be measured for a cap and gown. Rehearsals for graduation start and everyone is excited. Finally the big day arrives. Graduation is here. The time that seemed so long in coming. Then it's over. You're saying goodbye to your friends. In a few hours the all-night party will mark the end of your High School Days. The future days andwhatever they hold will never be like those just left behind, those of your senior year . ng . 93 savantiers w'65 C C C C C wabadf' K 1 ft CLASS COUNCIL, Front Row: T. Lee, P. The Veritaes song, written by Barbara Incardona, is sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne : Oh, Veritaes, the summer class of 1965, Eternally, in memory, your name will be alive. With colors bright, Of sun and White, And truth the path we're on, Let wisdom be our destiny, As the Veritaes strive on. Led by the president Chuck Halaby and vice president John Miller, the class worked with secretary Lynn Margoles, treasurer Barbara Benz, and historian Joana Miller to make it a successful year. Hush days, on April 26th and 29th, were unusually quiet and the winners were announced af- ter the exciting play day. The Candlelight dinner was at the beautiful Castaways restaurant in Burbank and was very suc- cessful. The senior breakfast, held in the school cafeteria, had both good food and good enter- tainment. That day, June 17th, marked the end of the semester and graduation for the Veritaes class. All the students and faculty of Birmingham High wish them the best of luck and a successful future. 5' ' 3 ' fa- l l ax vin? , i Q mf Judy Abbott Secretary JoAnn Abney Ouida Abney Harriet Abriel Earl Adkins Mike Allan College Beauty School Dental Assistant Political Science Minister Brian Allen Bruce Allen Cathie Allen Bernard Altman Lynn Altman Traveler UCSD Teacher Berkeley College Richard Anderson Terry Antelyes Marcie Arnold Ronald Arnold Marc Avey Walter Avila Oregon State USC College College Lawyer Chemist Susan Babcock Kristine Bailey Mary Balish Donald Ballensky Dan Barlow Housewife SMCC Airline Hostess Armed Forces Valley State Lynne Barry Hairdresser Ricky Bartoli David Barton Jerry Baruck Robert Bass Edward Bauer Law School Julliard School of Music UCSB UCLA Trade Tech. dw-'W If-5 vw? iff' Q KT' T,-ff' m. , Q J! fe? fr if as -5525. I can truly say that this year at Birmingham we have attained a goal that is the dream of every school, that dream being cooperation and teamwork. Both students and administrators have demonstrated this true spirit, know only at Birmingham, proving once again that Birmingham rules at anything that she does. On behalf of the entire Board of Control, I would like to thank the faculty and administration for the invaluable guidance they have given throughout the entire year. We, the Board of Control, cannot fully express our appreciation to the administration for their special consideration of all measures that we brought before them. And also a special word of thanks to Mr. Starer for his outstanding guidance and understanding. Without his assistance I do not believe that we could have accomplished anything this semester. Naturally, all achievements during the semester were the result of conscientious backing of every member of the Student Council and the fine support of the Student Body. A special word of thanks to all the students who participated in our activi- ties and helped make them the successes that they were. With you, the returning students, remains the responsibility of maintaining Birmingham High's prestige, scholarship, spirit, and mighty athletic teams. It is hard to relay the importance of this to you. The only way that I believe that you would understand this importance is to place yourself in my position when I represented Birmingham at conference or gathering. Myself and the other delegates from Birmingham, always felt just a little bit prouder, for we know that we are from a winning school, a school full of spirit and tradition. We were from a school that works together to stay on top, where we shall always stay. I cannot urge you strongly enough to keep taking part, and to keep Birmingham in the position where it is now, number one. I also want to thank you for affording me the honor of representing Birmingham as Student Body President, an experience which I shall never forget. To all students and graduates my sincere thanks for a full and prosperous past and my sincere wishes for a full and prosperous future. Mike Ovitz Student Body President -.4-..,,..,,,, , ,, ,f ,. Bir- mingham is truly experiencing its finest hour, for its Braves have brought it many honors, both athletically and academically. Now this finest hour is being complimented by the appearance of new classrooms, offices, and athletic facilities. However, I am sure that the old Birmingham will be forever remembered by those that were a part of it. I can't describe the feeling I have as I leave Birmingham, but it's one that no true and loyal Brave can escape. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the students, for giving me the chance to serve as your president. Being Student Body President is certainly a climax to my stay at Birmingham and I'm only sorry that I couldn't know each and every student personally. Wayne Sink took over as head coach aided by line coach Lynn Lomen. Early season losses to Santa Barbara and Reseda can by no means be attributed to the lack of talent on our part. Out- standing lettermen who lead the team were quarterbacks Craig Schusterick and Bernie Carr. Excellent pass re- ceivers were Randy Peterson, Ross McNutt, and Mike Dexter. Dave Drysdale, Dave Enrico, and Greg Buchannan made possible a strong backfield while Bill Brucker, John Cort, Don Rose, Tim O'Brien, and Pat McKelly kept the line equally as strong. Despite the fact this years championship slipped barely from our grasp, we can look forward to the 1965 season. SANTA BARBARA 19-20 MONROE 7-0 RESEDA 0-14 CLEVELAND 19-18 .' m 'Z 4 Coach W. 'isa-wa, -vt 5 cross country This year's Varsity Cross Country team, the finest in Birmingham's his- tory, tied for fourth place in the City. Lead by City champ, Kim Ellison, the Braves were Lmdefeated in league com- petition. The J-Vee team, placing third in league, was up against some mighty tough competition, as well as our tenth grade team, who placed fifth in the league. Many days went by without the school student body realizing what our Cross Country teams were doing. While everyone here slept or relaxed, our guys were out putting mileage in, for their long, hard work-outs. Team spirit and a strive for their goals were always the factors of Birming- ham's fine athletic teams. is U ..-iX,fi,':,gt:7 3z'fi',i,g1tfT.t-,,,,XS?i5:t Q T E fu f.,. . as , . With the teachers comes not only new faces, but new methods of teaching and new ideas to help to enrich the students outlook on studying and learning. In keeping with the theme, these new teachers show us, the students, new ways of learning and studying which all contri- butes to the building of a better future not only for the stu- dents, but for the school. As long as there are new teachers with new ideas there will always be a better future. KJIXIL-1. gm? f ,. - fg, 9 .1275 4 . ,.
