Clubs of Birdville is the develop- ment of a high degree of leader- ship and citizenship in the students of today who are destined to take their place as tomorrow's business- men. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, composed of twenty-five representatives from the four classes in high school, was or- ganized in 194-8. The purpose of this organization is to establish a system of student govern- ment that will furnish training in citi- zenship, develop leadership, and en- courage enforcement of the' policies of the school. The Student Council sponsors the annual Christmas boxes, Homecoming program, and ticket sales to games. Mrs. Shannon, the sponsor, has a conference with the President, Kenneth McCarty. They are a branch of the National Red Cross. Every one in school who contributes to their fund becomes a member. There is a representative chosen from each homeroom in high school. SLIDE RULE CLUB The Slide Rule Club was organized in September, 1953, with ten mem- bers and Miss Peniclc as sponsor. The purpose of the club is to teach the members the principle and use of the slide rule. Each member owns his own slide rule and each studies and progresses at his own rate. This year there are eight members, all boys. Anyone may become a member by indicating a desire to learn the slide rule and bringing his own slide rule. Senior English students delve into the life of Milton and 'll Penseroso' with the assistance of Mrs. McEwen. The purpose of English is to foster a better under- standing of language principles. These principles include the ability to speak and write pleasingly and forcefully and the oportunity to gain a wider knowledge of literature for cultural development of individuals. The Swing Band furnishes music for all occasions. Members are: Donald Bratcher, Lyndell Smith, Deverl Overman, Windel Dicker- son, ,lean Greenlee, Tafford Blessing, J. W. MUSIC Training is offered in both music and applied music. ln the vocal division, students may participate in the mixed chorus and small vocal ensembles. ln the instrumental division they may further their musical experiences by participation in the marching and concert band. The band, under the di- rection of Mr. Bohannon, practices for an assembly program. The Choral Club has furnished many hours of beauti- ful music for the school. COMMERCIAL ART The Birdville High Commercial Arts De- partment offers a variety of subjects to prepare students for the business and commercial world. Beginning and ad- vanced typing is offered, along with shorthand, bookkeeping, and junior busi- ness training. The department also tries to help the student with job placement recommendations.
