L-ii as--Acfibwr--1b I 1 1. 1 1 W I Y' fEi'LAss HIST61217 Z,7 -'fbi Twelve years ago, September, 1938, twenty-three little first graders climbed the steps to the grade school. For many of them, this was the first time they had been away from home alone. It was with fear and trembling, that they saw their mothers depart leaving them to face alone the unknown dangers of the first grade room. The names of these little first graders were: Lois Welch, Warren Underwood, Elaine Underwood, Elaine Stunkel, Arlene Kuhlmann, Roland Hoffman, Dallas Hitchcock, Lloyd Burr, Helen Paxton, Naomi McGr1ffha Naomi Clark, Estella Borman, Kenneth Trout, Jerry Allen Calvin rtley, Jimmie Weeks, Darlene Hitchcock, Robert Smith, and doe Phillips. However, before long Miss Smith CMrs. Boersmab their teacher, made them feel at home and soon placed their feet on the road to scho- lastic achievement. Following a successful school year, they bade goodbye to Miss Smith and were ready to journey into the second grade. During the summer, these little folks grew into sturdy seven- year-olds ready for the second grade. As school resumed it was dis- covered that Jerry Allen, Helen Paxton and Kenneth Trout had moved to other schools. This year the class welcomed Joyce Lee, Alice Baker, Floyd Larson, Lavinna Kearns, Lois Boatsman, Austin Freemyer, and Erminia Henkel into their Jolly little group of Ulive-wires.' As Mrs. Lucille Long guided them through the second grade--Mrs. Crum, their music teacher, recognized the talent in the group and organized a rhythm band. when the goldenrod was yellow the members of this class were ready and eager to start to school again--this time as third graders. This year the following members were added to the group: Margaret Ann Hunt, Bernice Smith, Robert Smith, Samuel Woods, and Kenneth Woods. Their teacher was Mrs. Alberta Kemp-Anderson, Mr. Graves was the music teacher. During this year, a May Day program was given for their mothers. The group was sorry to lose Austin Freemyer, Robert Smith, and Lois Boatsman. In the fourth grade, Miss Phyliss Hinkhouse was their teacher while Mr. Denton was their music teacher. It was found that Naomi Clark, Neil Allen, Joyce Lee, Betty Weeks, Sammy Woods, and Arlene Potter had ceased to be members of the class and that Marion Powell at last, they were ready for the fifth grade, but alas! was a new student. This was red-letter operetta, USeason of Happiness,n was given fourth grade were uelves.H And now girls were Nbutterfliesn and year for the group as the by the grade school. The npansiesn while the boys they had n5 Miss Neihaus' room. It was a sad day when the group was divided, but during the last semester the class welcomed Miss Ella Mueller and again became a happy united fifth grade. The music teacher this year was Miss Nichols. During their fourth grade school term they lost Bernice Smith, Floyd Larson, Merrill Amsberry, and Estella Borman' the class gained Robert Smith. At last they were sixth graders--the oldest class in the grade school, consequently, they were especially careful to set a good example for the younger pupils. Their teacher was Miss Neihaus, and their music teacher was Miss Welch. Floyd Larson was welcomed back to the group this year, and Jean Wilson joined the class as a new member. Now as the sixth grade year drew to a close the class anticipated that most important step to be made in the fall--moving over to the high school building. teacherg therefore, one-half of the group was sent to +51 'qi mf 5 'i I 'I , I 'T CQNTJNUED when school started again they found seven new teachers and a few new students. This year Verna Gipe, Dallas Hitchcock, and Darrel Hubbard entered the class. Mrs. Collings was the class sponsor. The eighth grade class consisted of ten girls and eleven boys eager and willing to participate in many activities. These activities included the music festival at Norton at which the girl's chorus, under the direction of Miss Gilbert, won a Usuperiorn rating. Then, too, ribbons were won in track and spelling and the boys played seven suc- cessful basketball games that year. As eighth graders the class had two sponsors--Mrs. Cram the first semester, and Mr. Bryant the last semester. The new students added to the class were Deloris Kehlbeck, Dorothy Nelsen, Fred Magley, Layle Bowers, Bobby Glasco, and Elmer Woodard. The outstanding program for the year was given for commencement. Working faithfully and energetically, the class practiced songs, plays, and readings and thus prepared the way for their commencement--another step toward fulfillment of their education. As typical freshmen--green but eager--the class welcomed into their midst several new members as well as Mr. Hoffert, their sponsor. At the first of the year the class enrollment numbered thirty, four of these dropped out during the first semester. Later on, Darrel Purvis and Darrel LaRue were welcomed to the class. As freshmen, the class elected the following class officers: Donald Cress, president, Deloris Kehlbeck, vice president, Elaine Stunkel, secretary and treasurer, Warren Underwood, reporter. Freshman initiation was a gala affair featuring the imitation of a comic strip character by each freshman. At a special assembly held in the Little Theater prizes were awarded to Dwight McConnell, who im- itated the Lone Ranger, and Bonnie O'Leary for imitating Mrs. Katzen- jamer,A few weeks later an all-school party was held for the freshmen. During the sophomore year the class of 1950 had two skating parties at Goodland which resultedin a Joyful but uhard-fallingu time. Leonard Forbes, Chris Jensen, Edwin Lamb, Jake Nelson, and Bonnie O'Leary ceased to be members of the class during this year. Class officers for the year were as follows: president, Gene Hiltyg vice president, Jean Anne McDowell, secretary and treasurer, Gene Jensen, Mr. Becktold was the sophomore sponsor. The juniors of l9l+8-M9 started a very active year by electing their class officers as follows: president, Elaine Stunkel, vice pres- ident, Jean Anne McDowell, secretary, Elaine Lillich, treasurer, Don Cress3reporter, Lois Welchgstudent council representat1ve,Gene Jensen, The class began the new school year minus some of 1ts members-- Glenn Cormack Roland Hoffman, Deloris Meguire, and Melvin Peters. Erminia Henkel came in as a new junior. The first junior activity of the year was the selling of magazines. Prizes were won by Gene Hilty, Elaine Underwood, and Deloris ehlbeck for selling the most subscrip- tions. nDon't Take My Penny' a clever play, was presented by a class of seventeen juniors. Also, the Junior class nrigged upn the traditional spook house for the senior carnival, and closed their year of activi- ties by honoring the seniors with the Junior-senior banquet. On September 6, l9M9, twenty-six dignified seniors entered the halls of BCRHS to begin the last phase of their high school education. The year was started off with the election of the following class of- ficers: Frank Chipperfield, president, Arlene Kuhlmann, vice pres- identa Elaine Underwood secretary, Elaine Stunkel, treasurer, Deloris Kehlbeck, student council representative. The sponsors were Mr. Jones and Mr. Penny. The senior carnival this year had a Fiesta theme. Chances were sold on a deep-freeze and rifle. The lucky winners were as follows: Willard Bowers--the deep-freezes Mr. J. B. Hoffert--the rifle. The carnival was considered a successful affair. 5 'E' 1 W CQNTJNUED and then, one day in December, the expressions 'Isn't she pretty?n and uIsn't he handsome?h were heard throughout the halls of BCRHS. Movie stars? No--the seniors had received their pictures. Another highlight of this year was the production of NCardinal Tales,N the traditional senior annual. The staff was composed of the following members: editor-in-chief, Elaine Underwood, assistant editor, Don Cress, and production manager, Deloris Kehlbeckg business manager, Elaine Stunkelg publicity director, Fred Magleyg and sponsor, Mr. Penny. On April 13 and lk, the seniors gave their senior play and it was enjoyed by all. Finally the sun arose on the long-awaited day, April 22--the be- ginning of the senior trip. Bright and early the seniors gathered at BCRHS and soon a caravan of seven cars headed southward. This trip included sightseeing in Carlsbad Caverns, Old Mexico, El Paso, Canon City and the Royal Gorge. One of the many highlights of the trip was the tour through the Colorado State Prison at Canon City. The wander- ers returned home on April 27 in time for the Junior-Senior banquet and prom which was held the next night, April 28. Then came the climax and fitting end to four years of hard and diligent work--commencement. Graduation was held on May 18. 1950. The speaker was Dr. Ralph V. Coder. The graduating class of 1950 was as follows: Roy Bacon, Layle Bowers, Bernadine Bunjes Lloyd Burr, Frank Chipperfield, Don Cress Delbert Flemming, Verna Gipe, Erminia Henkel, Gene Hilty, Dallas Hitchcock, Gene Jensen, Deloris Kehlbeck, Arlene Kuhlmann, Darrel LaRue Elaine Lillich Fred Magley, Dwight Mc- Connell, Jean Anne McDowell, Dorothy Nelsen, foe Phillips, Darrel Pur- vis, Elaine Stunkel, Elaine Underwood warren Underwood, Lois Welch. And so were ended twelve full but happy years of elementary and secondary education for the class of 1950. Few, if any, of them will write their names in the Hall of Fame but the members of this class will long be remembered in the halls of their Alma Mater. 'Tis true-- they have passed out of BCRHS to make room for the others, but in passing, they have left their mark and, through the years, their memory will remain in these halls to serve as an element of encouragement and inspiration to those who may follow in their footsteps. Upon an- swering the call, his efficient secretary, Deloris Kehlbeck, learned that the call was from Topeka. The voice on the other end of the wire was vaguely familiar, but she could not quite place it. nIs the mayor in?n asked the voice. v nNo he isn't,n replied Deloris nMay I take the message?U Wwhy yes. This is Darrel LaRue. I am calling to let the mayor know that I am planning a campaign tour and will arrive in Bird City tomorrow by Trans-World Airlines.n Darrel LaRue? Campaign tour? Oh yes, of course! Darrel was Fred Magley's campaign manager while Fred was running for the gover- norship of the state of Kansas. Soon Darrel returned to the office. He had been to welcome warren Underwood the great Metropolitan Opera singer, and his wife Nina back to Bird City for a visit. When Deloris told him about the phone call he decided to meet Darrel and Fred at the airport and then take all of his former classmates for a tour of the town. The next morning Deloris and Darrel picked Warren and Nina up at their hotel and drove them to the airport. The plane was not due for fifteen minutes so Darrel suggested that they go to see Gene Jensen. UHe's president of Trans-World A1rlines,n Darrel explained, Hand has his headquarters in that large building by the hangar.n Gene welcomed them into his beautifully furnished office and they talked about old times. Before they knew it the fifteen minutes were upg the plane hadmlanded and Darrel and Fred were waiting for them. On the way back to town Fred said that the growth of Bird City in the last ten years was amazing and the visitors all agreed. nTwo of the reasons for the growth, I think,n Darrel remarked, Ware that the T. W. A. headquarters and our large new hospital are located here. I am taking you to see our hospital. Here we are now.n Uwho is that coming down the steps,u asked Warren, nHe looks familiar.n nThat's Don Cressa the doctor,U answered Deloris, nThey say he's a wonderful physician. Don greeted them cordially and invited them to come in and see the hospital. They found that the receptionist was none other than Bernadine Bunjes. Deloris explained later that Bernadine was still single and remarked that she probably could not make up her mind be- tween her job and D. L. As Don took the group into the waiting room, they noticed Elaine Rae sitting there with her small twins. The twins seemed to be doing their best to pick a fight with each other. Elaine said she had brought them in for cold shots--not that a cold would ever catch up with them. Darrel told Fred that Gene and Elaine were living on a farm north of town, and were doing quite well. nSay, by the way, Elaine have you heard from Dorothy lately?N asked Deloris. Elaine said that Dorothy was working with a fruit packing company in San Marino, California. They wondered why she chose to work in that far-away state. Could the fact that V.K. is out there have anything to do with it?? nYou remember Arlene Kuhlmann, don't you?U Elaine asked,'she is a commercial teacher in the high school and works overtime helping Roy with his elevator books. He owns his Dad's business now and, in his spare time, is still trying to build the perfect auto racer.n As time was running short the group said goodbye and moved on with the promise to have a get-together soon and discuss old times. f i. gl 1 5 'i Q 5 '1 CONTINUED Just as Don was remarking that he had a couple more surprise the group, they were nearly all knocked flat by a white blur. they had all recuperated, they found--much to their delight--a astonished redhead. Could this be Jean Anne? Don confessed that was one of his surprises, but that he had not planned it quite way. They learned that, besides being a nurse, Jean Anne was Jr's housewife. Jean Anne was just going off duty so Don asked if she would the group the rest of the hospital since he had to get back t s for when very this this also show o his office. He insisted that Jean Anne show the group the large kitchen. In the kitchen who should they find but their old classmate and the hospital's dietician, Elaine Stunkel. Jean Anne said she didn't know whether she took the job to be near home or D.C. Soon the group had completed their tour of the hospital and once again found themselves out on the noisy streets of Bird City. Jean Anne and Elaine joined them and they all went downtown to a cafe to ea. The group was discussing their old school days when Verna walked in. She recognized them and came over to greet them. Verna had finally married Neal and was now owner of her own beauty salon and was really taking in the business. Her classmates had always said that nbeautifyingn was her vocation. As Verna hadn't eaten yet she Joined the group and again the conversation turned to the class of '5O. They learned that Dallas had built a large pool hall alley a few years back. He had married some St. Francis has a family of four. Dwight had married a professional skating star and operates the largest and nicest roller-skating rink in Kansas. and bowling girl and now now owns and northwestern when Warren asked whatever hapgened to Lloyd Burr, Darrel laughed and said that Lloyd was a Jockey an was going to run in the Kentucky Derby that next fall. Their attention was drawn to the window when an old model T sliding around the corner with a black Plymouth after it. 'That be Layle Bowers, our city marshal,n said Darrel. went must 'Delbert married Doris Lea soon after she graduated? mentioned Elaine Hand they now live on a large ranch in Colorado.N nLet's see that only makes twenty-one of the class. what about 7 the rest?n asked warren. nElaine Lillich is finishing another year as Dean of Women at Wartburgh College, Waverly, Iowa,n said Deloris. nThe other day when I mentioned to Gene that she is coming back to Bird for the summer, he smiled determinedly and sa1d,YI know, but she won't be going back fall, if I have my way about itJn next Just then the door opened and in rushed Lois and Lee. They seemed to be in a hurry, but when Lois recognized her old classmates she for- got their hurry and stopped to talk a few minutes. Lee is one of those big city farmers with land scattered all over the country, and Lois is busy keeping house and raising five boys. Jean Anne spoke up, nJoe an Erminia are married and have a fam- ily. Joe is running a filling station while Erminia manages the tour- ist camp and cafe. From what I hear, they are planning to enlarge the business.' The conversation was interrupted by Darrel, 'Frank Chipperfield, our senior class president! How could we forget him? He is now a professional football player, playing for the Chicago Bears.n 'And, of course, there was Mr. Penny and Mr. Jones,u said Elaine. nMr. Penny is the professor of science, at K.U. and Mr. Jones given up teaching and returned to his band.' has When dinner was over and as the group said goodbye, they planned to meet for a reunion of the class of 1950 in the very near future and in the meantime, all promised to vote for Fred.
