As usual they were different, but with their bright smiles and friendly faces they fit right in. All three of the exchange students had different reasons for coming to the USA. ”1 wanted to come to the US to learn the language and to discover a new type of life by understanding their point of view. said Phillipe Walker from Switzerland. I decided to travel to the United States because I like to travel. I like new adventures and fun!” , commented Sabrinal Opfer from Germany. Some people I know have spent a year here as exchange students and when they told me about it I became interested in coming over here, replied Helena Soinien, from Finland. This country is what I expected. The TV programs and the music is exactly what I imagined, said Sabrina. The people are a lot different, but I like them. The schools in Germany, Finalnd, and Switzerland are very different from the US. The school that Sabrina attends is much easier and they don’t attend the same classes everyday. Helena attends a school that is much harder than here. Tests and homework were much different. If you attended Phillipe’s school you wouldn’t be able to choose any of your classes, and you would not finish the day until Helina Soinien poses for a picture in the library. Helina and Sabrina relax in the library 36 The camera catches Phillipe in the hallway with a smile. patiently for her measurements. Mrs. Jekel measures Tracy Malecki's head for her graduation cap. Coach Vitany explained, We didn't have nineth grade football last year and was unprepared for JV this year. Over the course of the season, we improved a great deal. We ended up beating or tying three previously undefeated teams. The best thing according to Mr. Vitany about the 1985 season was, Some players learned the great amount of work and dedication to excellence that is needed for success. The worse thing was that some did not. Next fall's varsity will shine even brighter with the addition of this squad. As player Scott Rivard stated, I would have to say that learning to play well together was the teams most important goal. Caches, Mr. Periard, Mr. Ehlow and Mr. Munson did a good job coaching the ninth grade players. They had all the patience and understanding that coaches need to make a team play well. These coaches also prepared the Freshmen players for moving up to Junior Varsity Football in the 1986-87 school year. 101 Freshmen team line up for kick off. You may have also noticed that you’ve never seen any of the girls perform in year's past. All the girls were new in '85. Even the coach, Mrs. Char Gagliardi, was new this year. Well, this team has beaten the odds and given this Panther school some- thing to ROAR about. Big, white signs signifying the Home of a Panther , you can thank that to the Varsity Cheerleaders. They really went all out to generate spirit, especially at homecoming. Buying the seniors flowers, footballs on lockers, and lots of new bright signs in the hallways was their way to boost morale. The girls even made a delicious break- fast on the day before the game for the players. The cheerleaders really took control in the summer. All their hard work paid off at the DCA camp they attemded at Northwood College. They took second in a competition against may other squads. They also brought home a fourth place trophy at the DCA state competition. With their brand new coach, Mary Beam, the team took awhile to get things going. Meetings took place the first and thirk Thursdays of each month at 7:00 a.m. Being in sports wasn't a necessity for joining FCA. The meetings generally went by a sect schedule. It started with an opening prayer then moved onto a business meeting where they discussed fund raising and the like. The main FCA” part of the meeting included seeing a film, listening to a guest speaker, or having a valuable discussion. resident Angie Austin says, Beino Pres- ident of FCA gives her a chance to help others in the group. 172 JL®Mt© IS Off Ken Aldridge is seen here look- ing up information for the next meeting. Back in 1979 he began chess here at Birch Run as an interleague competition with nine other schools in and around the Saginaw County area. Team members for the 1985-36 school year were: Ken Aldridge, Tom Strong, Dave Reno, Kris Aldridge, Darrin Childs, Philipe Walker, Jim Jacobs, Tony White, and Fred McMan. 175 (Totati e Ihc firsl dnu of Mr. Telgenhof- Head of The FTA The FTA (Future Teachers of America) headed by Mr. Telgenhof meets everyday for one hour at the North Elementary with various teachers at different hours. The FTA members work in the classrooms with the young students, thus providing themselves with experience that may prove valuable in the future as they choose the work they plan to spend most of their lives in. Though most of these teacher assistants plan to be teachers themselves someday, some plan to be child psychologists and child care workers. Therefore, this gives them insight into the thinkings and actions of the youngsters. This years FTA includes 12 members. Do you want to do some research on a career through the MOIS computer? Do you need help on homework, a term paper, or just looking for a good book to read? Well, the school library is the place, and the library assistants are just the people you need. They are always ready and willing to help, and always with a smile. They know all the ins and outs of the library: where to find certain magazines and paperbacks- even when the plants were last watered. Mr. Shepard helps Brent Boyce on homework. Kelly Morse 178 They are going all out to provide easier to use information. Four Student Library Assistant Projects are in the making. They span from directories of magazines and newspapers, down to a special volume to explain just what the library is, and how to use it. They do everything they can to make the library a relaxing, comfortable place to be. All in all, we think they’re indespensable! They put up with our ignorance, our stupidity getting books, and our ability to ride the wrong bus to the wrong destination. We here at Birch Run high school should dedicate a holiday highlighting their wonderful and oh so rightious acts, which they do willingly every day. Birch Run should erect a mon- ument commemorating the hardfought efforts of our school assistants. Yes, the school assistants of Birch Run high school are a dying breed. They should very well be appreciated before going extinct or to college. YOUR FULL SERVICE CENTER GRAYS Mark Maeder helping out in Mrs. Pollard’s room. Mark also ran the darkroom 3rd hour. To the janitorial staff who cleaned up our mess, unlocked our jammed lockers, and maintained our buildings - we thank you! At times our student body forgot that those clean corridors were a result of alct of hard work by this crew. Dick, Wayne, Ed, Pat, Don, and Steve gave our buildings that extra care to make it all live- able the day after. These young men and women worked to earn money to go out on dates, to pay for cars and just to have a little spending money when they need it. While working these part-time jobs, the kids got training in discipline, how to work on a team and how to take orders from other people.
