WAo n ? This year's float theme was “Comic Strips . Each class was given two weeks to finish their float. Sept. 21 until Oct. 3. The winner was chosen at half- time of the Homecoming football game Oct. 3. (See page 3-9.) C, Where Has Clockwise: Doug Periard on the drums, Steve Juillett on the keyboard, and Keith Poineau sing- ing Don't Try Sui- cide . At one of the Pep Assemblies. Lisa McQuarters and Cindy Gibson. The Cheerleaders and the Pom Pon Squad for the first time preform together. Phil Periard, Doug Periard, and Mike Haley showing their spirit on Hat Day of Spirit Week. Steve Clore, Vince May, and Steve Morris playing Let's Go Blue for the Spirit Jug. Miss Kurtz also showing off her hat for Hat Day. Gone? Why aren't there more Pep Assemblies is the question alot of students ask. The main reason is because of lack of participation. Out of approximately 800 students, barely 200 show up for the few assemblies we do have and the ones who do come want to leave early. Do we have to lock the gym doors until it's time to leave? In 1978 Pep Assemblies were only for the Cheerleaders, Pep Club members and Ball Players. They decided that the team needed more spirit. Also, the lack of students for spirit week has been greatly increasing. While the Teachers become more involved the students become less involved. Now even the Band and Chorus concerts have been taken away. Pep Assemblies, Band Concerts, and other professional assemblies are a privilege. When the Student Body fails to participate they are cancelled. The more we participate the more we can participate in. ? Homecoming Spirits Not In the climate controlled comfort of the gymnasium the cheerleaders pumped loads of spirit into tne student body at our annual homecoming pep assembly featuring their ver- sion of Hee Haw . The first annual Spirit Jug was taken away by the juniors. Because of the winter-like weather the band could not perform for the pre-game or half-time shows, but managed to endure the almost unbear- able conditions of the parade. Pom pon Squad entertained the homecoming audience dur- ing pre-game with their rou- tirae to Funkytown . Half-time started with our yearly float contest. This year the theme was Comic Stripes . The Seniors chose Star Wars with the theme Panthers Strike Back . Den- nis the Menace was selected by the Juniors with their motto Don't Menace Us . The Sophomores chose Broom Hilda with the motto Stir 'Em Up . Marmaduke was selected by the freshman with the saying Eat Em Up . The floats were judged on appropriateness of the theme, originality of thought, com- pleteness, and care in work- manship. When scores were tallied the class of 1983 won the Float Jug. Another special event that takes place during half-time is the crowning of the Home- coming Queen. This years court consisted of Mary Sweers and Fred Port; Lisa Poineau and Steve Clore; Rose Nielsen and Mike Foy; Jo Ann Remender Dampened By Rain • • • and Todd Tanner; and Gail Spear and Todd Senyko. Chosen by the students of Birch Run High for their Home- coming Queen......Jo Ann Remen- der. She was crowned by the 1979 Queen, Carolyn Trinklein. Clouding the homecoming festivities was the Panther's loss to the Millington Card- inals, 7-0. To end a very memorable home- coming was the annual home- coming dance organized by the Student Council. The music was provided by Sounds, Good Productions. Top: Left; Homecoming Queen Jo Ann Remender. Right; Queen Jo Ann and court; Mary Sweers, Rose Nielsen, Lisa Poineau and Gail Spear. Keynote Address: Seniors entered the Baccalaureate service to the music of the pro- cessional played by fellow classmate Cathy Zuellig on Sunday, June 7, 1981. Services were held in the high school gymnasium at one o'clock in the afternoon. Dana Garno began the service with an invoca- tion prayer. The Lord's Prayer was then per- formed by harpist Laura Leppien, also a graduate of 1981. The address was given by Reverend James D. Jacobs. Theme for his address was Where Are You Going? After the address, Cathy Zuellig again performed at the organ, presenting the Meditation on Beecher. Brian Grim concluded the service with the benediction. Competition for the honor was especially tough this year as 14 students vied to be selected. Of the group, twelve were members of the award-winning Forensic team, making the selection especially difficult for members of the faculty judging panel. For the first time in memory, all candidates for the Class Orators were female members of the class. Chosen to deliver messages to fellow classmates because of the clarity and sincerity of their speeches as well as for their presentation were: Laura Leppien, Linda McCabe, LeAnn Reinhardt and Dana Gamo. An outgrowth of the four speeches was the class theme for 1981: We are not afraid of tomorrow for we have seen yester- day and we love today. 51 tncl cWe Culminating thirteen years of teachers, books, classes--school, members of the Senior class of 1981 participated in their commencement ceremonies on Wednesday, June 10 in the high school gymnasium. Entering the auditorium to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance the classmates proceeded to their final place of hon- or as graduates. In- vocation was delivered by Marion Hudeck, Member of the Board of Education. Class Orators delivered messages for fellow class- mates around the class theme: We are not afraid of tomorrow for we have seen yesterday and we love today. Announcement of honors graduates was made by Principal Jerry Psotka. Seniors approached the stage to receive diplomas as Class President Lisa Poineau called their names. Presentation of the sheep- skins was made by Board members Gilbert Berg, Sr. , Ila M. Davis, Marion N. Hudeck and Roger Rein- hardt . The Benediction given by Mrs. Davis was followed by the recession of Grad- uates of Birch Run High School. The Concert Band provided all music for the event. 52 Beginning upper left and clockwise: Seniors stand before the Invoca- tion. A flag line and a drum major have been welcomed as a regular part of all football pre-game and halftime shows, as well as the annual parades. The band updated its look with new uniforms this year. To help pay for them, the Band Boosters sponsored an auction, and several local merchants offered their help by do- nating some of their profits to the band. The 5th grade band and the high school bands participated in a candle sale, which raised over $2500 for new equipment. Sophomore Sweetheart Wendy Klein, Debbie Wenn, Shelly Belill, Jill Bair and Mary Beam. Taking A The yearbook staff is taking a look back at the school year in events that happened in our community. Walking down Main Street to- ward the middle school you might notice a new addition to Birch Run. It's called Birch Run Sports. It is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pollard. Jan Pollard teaches biology, anatomy and physiology, and coaches track at Birch Run High. A gasoline explosion at Conlee's Oil Company occurred Tuesday, December 30, 1980, at 9:40 A.M. Tank truck driver Ralph Coffins was filling underground storage tanks when the tank overflowed. Coffins, 34, and Conlee employee Keith Palmer, 30, were wiping up the overflow when something ignited the fumes and caused the explo- sion. Both Coffins and Palmer were killed. Hot lunch prices rose to 75 cents on January 26, 1981. The price has been rising steadily since the beginning of the year. As many of you may have noticed in the past year the price of everything has skyrocketed. Birch Run was faced with an- other millage request for a 12.95 mills renewal and an additional four mills for operation. It was defeated February 9, 1981. The millage will be voted on again in June. A Save Our Schools committee has been formed to publicize the need for the millage. A bird making a nest in the trasformer next to Krausses Funeral Home and Michigan Service Center caught on fire which short circuit the elec- trical power and caused a Look Back blackout in Birch Run. Students were sent home at 11:00 and business' were closed down. The power returned at 6:00. Clockwise: BR Sports, Transmitter, Conlee's, Kelly Draper and others getting hot lunch. DEDICATION The 1981 Panther Tales' yearbook has been dedicated to Mrs. Linda Davis by her yearbook staff. Mrs. Davis was chosen be- cause of her ability to teach her students in an interesting, unique and exciting way. She makes learning fun and worthwhile. Before Mrs. Davis came to BR she was a co-op cordin- ator at Bridgeport High School. Classes she teaches at BR include record keeping, accounting, Typing I, and advisor to our yearbook staff. Mrs. Davis is also secretary of the Altrusa club and treasurer of the BR Education Association.
