She received this honor from her classmates for having an outgoing and pleasing per- sonality! The Regional Student Industrial Competitions were held at Delta College on March IOth 1973. Competing for Birch Run was Ray- mond Bartkowiak and Earl Kuhn in Automotive Servicing, Steve Fent, Mat Martinus, Dennis Carlson in Beginning Drawing, Steve Sykes and Brian Raymond in Product Design, Brian Tanner in Advanced Drafting, Jim Bohlen in Architec- tural Drawing, Dennis Gray, Dave Check in Woodworking, and Carl Raymond in Home Construction. All the fellows did a fine job. The Product Design team of Steve Sykes and Brian Raymond who designed an electric paint mixer placed third, Dennis Gray who built a step stool placed first which makes it two years in a row that Birch Run students took first place in woodworking. Carl Raymond built a partial storage shed to edge out a fellow Tri-C student from Bridgeport. State competition at Central Michigan will be held at Central Michigan University, April 7, 1973. Co-captains Louie Schultz and Tom Muehlenbeck proved to be guiding forces on the Panther : team with Schultz voted Most Valuable Player. Tom Muehlenbeck led in yards gain- ed on punt and kick-off returns, with 28 and 138 yards respec- tively. Mike Pagels and Gary Morgan tied for total number of points with 18 each. Morgan had two TD's rushing and Pagels had 3. Bill Ivey led in number of yards returned on pass interceptions with 56 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Leroy Morse led with 70 tackles and assists, followed by Earl Kuhn and Louie Schultz with 68 and 67, respectively. The Panthers lost 12 Senior players, but the team will be returning for a strong season in '73. Starting at center, John proved to be a compe- tent, aggressive ball player. John’s field goal and free throw percen- tages were 34.2% and 47%, respectively. LOUIE SCHULTZ Louie Schultz won All-Conference Honorable Mention after setting a new school record of 124 assists this season. Louie followed Brad with 45 steals, and shot 63.1% from the free throw line. Louie show- ed an improved game, winning his second Varsity. letter. “STEVE GUST Steve Gust, a third year Varsity player, managed to capture a new school record of 436 points scored this season. Steve was voted Most Valuable Player and made Second Team, All-Conference. Gust led team scoring in field goals and free throws, as any captain would. BRAD WILLIAMS Brad Williams, an agile hustler, lead his team in steals with 51 this season, and an average of 2.2 a game. Voted Most Improved Player last year, Brad returned to win his second Varsity letter and gain All-Conference Honorable Mention for this season’s fine play. m S E. This year the sport was not classified as competitive, but rather as recreational. One scrim- mage against Montrose was held and several of the Birch Run girls managed to place in their particular events. Peggy Jacobs took a first in shotput competition. The interest shown and the effort put forth by the girls proves the need for a girl's sports program at Birch Run. The team wants to give special thanks to Miss Bender, Non-Varsity Sports Association, and the | Athletic Board for making the team possible. Presently she and her husband, Arthur live at 7753 Ash Street in Birch Run. When she retired on December 3l, 1972 she was Head Bookkeeper for the school. She and Art returned from 15 days in Hawaii.
