FOOTBALL '69 This year the Panthers had an upsetting season finishing in seventh place with a 1-8 record — the only win was over Deckerville. The Panthers were hurt badly by injuries, ineligibility, and lack of depth. The Panthers look forward to a better season next year with 12 lettermen returning. This year the Panthers elected Jim Doll and Jeff Kline as co-captains for the '69 season. The Panthers had two members of the team on the Greater Thumb All Conference Football Team — Rick Wendzik at defensive end and Jim Doll at linebacker. Jeff Kline and Dick Woodward were given honorable mention. 80 Coach Peters and Coach Schilke reviewing pre-game plans with the team. BASEBALL 1969 In spite of bad weather and long road trips, the 1969 Panther squad put together a very fine year. In post- ing a 16-9 won lost record, this Birch Run nine captured the Greater Thumb Conference co-championship, and advanced to the Regional finals at the Mt. Pleasant Invitational tournament. Moments to remember from the 1969 season are: winning the Conference championship in spite of early season losses; the way Brady Gray's 15-game hitting streak came to an end; placing 5 players on the All Con- ference First Team; two horseshoes at the game that meant the championship; Ron Reed's performance on the mound; minus ten for bad bus running; and two great catches. Varsity letters were awarded to Dennis Keith, Bob Ross, Curt Porath, Brad Matzke, Jerry Kline, Steve Viau, Ron Reed, Bob Tune, Dick Crandall, Brady Gray, Rick Tanner, Craig Matzke, Dwight Bailer, Gene Hadsall, and Jeff Kline. 89 Varsity Baseball STANDING: B.
