PANTHER TALES BIRCH RUN HIGH SCHOOL Birch Run Area Schools 12450 Church Street Birch Run, Michigan BOARD OF EDUCATION l-EfT TO RIGHT: Louis Close Trustee; Edward Cusick, Trustee; Arthur Schumann, Treasurer; Gilbert Berg, President; Chester Hubinger, Secretary-retired 1967; Edwin Matzke, Secretary; Anthony Baszler, Trustee; missing from picture - Irvin Kime, Trustee. BOARD PLANS NEW FACILITIES Superintendent Marshall Greene holds wash drawing depicting Elementary unit of proposed three-unit $1.4 million building program on the drawing board as this year's PANTHER TALES goes to press. The expansion program, brought about by the addition of all Tay- mouth Township schools to the district on June 13, 1966, also includes an addition of high school facilities to the Harry M. Layman Building, an administration building, athletic field facilities and other site improvements and remodeling in schools of both townships. DEDICATION MR. CHESTER HUBINGER To Chester Hubinger, who faithfully and efficiently served as secretary of the Birch Run Board of Educa- tion for twenty-one years of his twenty-two year membership, we dedicate this 1967 PANTHER TALES. During his tenure in office the school district ex- panded its enrollment from 216 to 2,023 and was in- volved in the construction of over a million dollars worth of buildings. Invites you to relive the pleasant memories of the past school year through the pages of Panther Tales for 1967 JAMES WRIGHT - STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Superintendent SUPERINTENDENT MARSHALL GREENE High School Administrative Staff PRINCIPAL JERRY PSOTKA ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ARTHUR SMOCK Elementary Administration DONNA ADOMEIT Elementary Principal EUPHEMIA KONDAL Assistant Elementary Principal Office Staff LEFT TO RIGHT: Mary Doll, Helen Schumann, Sandalee Sproul, Linda Hodges. Diane Blomquist ART DEPARTMENT The Art Department of the Birch Run High School offers a course in the funda- mentals of art. It introduces the student to various techniques and media in the field. Art offers the opportunity for free-ex- pression. It brings out one's own per- sonality and advocates individuality and cultural growth. Sue Poellet, Walter Jakiemiec, Raymond Peters. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The objectives of the Physical Education De- partment are: to contribute to the physical and organic growth and development of the child and the improvement of body function and body stability, to contribute to the social traits and qualities that go to make up a good citizen and the development of sound moral ideas through participation under proper leadership, to contribute to the psychological development of the child and emotional stability resulting from stimulating experiences physically and socially, to contribute to the development of safety skills that increase the individual's capacity for protection in emergencies, both in handling himself and in assisting others and to contribute to the development of recreational skills that have a distinct place in leisure time hours both during and after school life. Kathryn VanDyke FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The Foreign Language program at Birch Run High School includes two years of Spanish. It is the purpose of the pro- gram to introduce the Spanish language so that students will be able to under- stand, speak, and write Spanish. Dur- ing both years the student learns vocabu- lary, Spanish grammar, and something of the life and customs of Spanish-speaking peoples. While complete fluency in speaking, reading, or writing Spanish will not be attained in only two years, it is hoped that Spanish I and Spanish II will provide a foundation for continued study or use. Patricia Dudewicz LIBRARY The Birch Run High School Library aims to further the objectives of the school by pro- viding personal and class enrichment opportu- nities to meet the needs of all of the students, all of the teachers, and the curriculum. SPEECH AND DRAMA DEPARTMENT The Speech and Drama Department of the Birch Run High School provides the student with a course in basic speech, further enhanced by forensics, and various theatre activities. Its purpose is to help the student speak clearly and fluently in conversation, informal and formal speech situations in dramatics, on radio and television and over the phone. Equally important, it teaches the student to listen intelligently. Dramatics develops the idea of communication and understanding of others by the study and portrayal of other personalities. Charles Martin, Diane Blomquist. Kathryn VanDyke, Pamela Elliott, Margaret Kelley. Judith Gillies, Judith Erdmann, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The English Department of Birch Run High School believes that the ability to communicate is vital in a democratic society. Therefore, the departmentattempts to offer to every student the op- portunity to develop his com- munication skills by providing classes and activities designed to develop each student's potential in reading, writing, listening and speaking. It is also the de- partment's hope that, within the classes and activities provided, the student will be led to an awareness and appreciation of opr literary heritage and of its role in the development of aesthetic, ethical and moral values. The department believes that its of- ferings will be valuable in the student's personal, social and occupational life. HOMEMAKING DEPARTMENT The Homemaking Department offers a two year program of study. During this time students learn how to be- come more effective family members. Besides practice in the practical skills of homemaking, students receive instruction in personal and social de- velopment, foods and nutrition, child development, clothing and textiles, housing and home furnishings, and home management. A broad program like this, concerning the many phases of homemaking, helps students acquire an understanding and appreciation of the basic principles underlying homemaking. Happy and successful living begins at home. Through the study of homemaking students learn to improve their home lives. Diane Berryman. CHEMISTRY-PHYSICS DEPARTMENT The purpose of Chemistry is to develop in the student a basic knowledge of the composition of substances, the changes that occur in the composition of these substances, and a general study of scientific subjects. Integrated with this, a laboratory period is provided to acquaint the student with laboratory procedure and investigation. Physics, the culmination of sci- ence in high school, is the study of matter and energy. Its purpose is to acquaint the student with the principles of mechanics, heat, sound, light, and electricity. Laboratory is provided to enhance certain concepts related to these areas. It is the goal of the science de- partment to develop in the student a mode of thinking conducive to his future understanding of science in this highly scientific world. Wallace Frank, Margaret Kelley. BIOLOGY AND SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Biology is a lecture and laboratory course in the basic principles of the living world and their practical applications to the affairs of man. The history of some of the more important biological concepts such as evolution, genetics, and a sur- vey of the plant and animal kingdoms ore included. To give the student an under- standing of the operation of the world of life is the prime objective. General Science gives a survey in depth in providing an understanding and over- view of basic science. It helps to meet the needs of students to prepare for the continuation in specialized high school courses and for the responsibilities of well informed citizens. Material from recent investigations in Geo-physics, uses of atomic energy, space exploration, and electronics helps carry the student beyond the limits of learning set in elementary science. Gerald Telgenhof, Charles Martin. James Houck INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT The aims and goals of the Industrial Arts Department include the following: to stress importance of planning and work- ing together, to develop interest in in- dustrial arts fields, to provide for skills and the development of these skills, to introduce techniques of modern industrial materials and processes, to develop habits of neatness, citizenship and safety, and to contribute generally to the aca- demic growth and development of the individual. MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The Mathematics Department of Birch Run High School offers a broad selection of courses so that a student is able to attain: a basic knowledge of simple statistics and of graphical methods, an understanding of the general properties of geometrical figures and the re- lationships among them, an understanding of the de- ductive method as a method of thought, an under- standing of the ideas of statistical inference as a method of drawing conclusion based on incomplete information, and an understanding of mathematics as a continuing creative endeavor with aesthetic values similar to those found in art and music. The department further aspires to extend and refine the power gained in applying mathematics so as to furnish a basis for an interest in future mathematical work, to meet the ordinary demands of daily life and the demands in future mathematical work. Wallace Frank, Walter Jakiemiec, Margaret Kelley, Lewis Stone. William McQuarters MUSIC DEPARTMENT The primary objectives of the Music Department are to stimulate interest in the study of music, develop a desire for good music, develop an instrumental and voice unitwhich shall cultivate worth- while leisure time activities and interest, and to represent our school and com- munity honorably. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT In a society challenged by complex and rapid change on all fronts, it is increas- ingly important that young people are fundamentally grounded in the social studies. A comprehensive study helps young people become good Americans by equipping them with the knowledge of their governments and the principles of democracy. It helps them to under- stand our world today through careful and critical exploration of the past. Larry Anderson, Mary Felton, Raymond Peters, Harry Layman. Walter Jakiemiec, Daryl Kazmier, A. W. Thorp. BUSINESS STUDIES DEPARTMENT The Business Studies Department per- ceives as its major role the training of young adults in general and particular fields. Training toward general educa- tional objectives is intended for all stu- dents taking any course in the Department. Regardless of the vocational aspirations of the students, certain personal-use training is a desirable function. Train- ing in particular fields is necessary for success in sales, office, and related occupations. Lester Ossewaorde COUNSELING DEPARTMENT It is the function of the Counseling Department to contribute steadily to a student's personal, academic and social growth. The department attempts to help the student become aware of and understand his strengths and weaknesses and then make appropriate decisions relative to these strengths and weaknesses. The student is urged to develop the ability to help himself. Each student is encouraged to subscribe to that four year program that best serves his interests and his needs.
