KEITH SIKKEMA In recognition of 34 years of service to the education of boys and girls, the Panther Tales staff dedicates this edition of our yearbook to A. K. Sikkema. He has inspired many students, including his two sons, to go on to higher educational accomplishment and has enriched the lives of all his students with his vast fund of knowledge. All of them have been amused by his witty tales and cleverly turned phrases. He has great interest in the arts and travels to Canada every summer to enjoy the Shake- spearean play festival. His retirement is sure to include travel and also considerable attention to his Christmas tree farm in northern Michigan. His many friends consider him to be the wittiest person they know. He is respected by his colleagues for his erudition and his knowledge of the basic philosophies of educational thought. Throughout the years he has been principal, superintendent, coach and teacher. Although he has been at Birch Run for only seven of his 34 years, we all feel that he is ours ex- clusively. We pay tribute to this wonderful man. Coach Jerry Psotka awarded varsity letters to: Ron Johnson, Tim Belill, Vilas Keith, Ernie Fredenburg, John Morgan, James Harcourt, Richard Baszler, Kurt Reinhardt, Harold Johnson, Robert Jacobs and James Fawcett (Manager). The cagers played in the Swartz Creek Christmas Tournament. It’s not the kind of record setting the Tartars like. They owned the most-points yielded in the MVC when New Lothorp spanked ’em. 96-37 Jan. 25. Friday night that record went by the boards as host Birch Run set school and MVC standards with a 104-66 romp. Birch Run’s 6-foot center Ron Johnson scored 45 points on 17 field goals in 31 tries and 11 foul-line hits in 16 attempts for an MVC individual standard. The previous mark was 39 scored by Gaines’ George Gillespie Feb. 21. 1958. and matched by Byron’s Dale Walter last Dec. 21 against MSD. Jerry Psotka’s winning Panthers made 43 of 99 shots for .434 in crashing the 100-point mark for the first time. Birch Run fin- ished with a 30-point fourth period, 14 by Johnson. Johnson had 14 in the second period. 6 in the first and 11 in the third. Vilas Keith (15 points) and Tim Belill (14) aided Johnson with Steve Kovacs’ 24 and Abram Powell’s 15 tops for MSD which won the first meeting from Birch Run. 44-40. That’s the only Tartar win in 14 starts. MSD has dropped 11 straight. The box score: Lothrop 72-58 Br.
