BIRCH RUN HIGH SCHOOL PANTHER TALES 1960 THROUGH THESE PORTALS A GENERATION OF BIRCH RUN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE PASSED AS THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM SERVED AS A STAGE FOR THEIR DRAMATIC, ATHLETIC AND MUSICAL EFFORTS. PARENTS OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE WATCHED WITH PRIDE AS TWENTY TWO GRADUATING CLASSES HAVE CROSSED THE AUDITORIUM STAGE TO RECEIVE DIPLOMAS. Birch Run Area School Birch Run, Michigan THROUGH THE MAGIC OF THE PRINTERS REPRODUCTIVE ART I LA MAE BEACH, BIRCH RUN'S STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT, INVITES YOU TO FLIP BACK THE PAGES OF 1960 AND ONCE AGAIN IN YOUR MEMORIES SEE FAMILIAR SCENES AND ROAM THE HALLS OF THE SCHOOL WE LOVE.. . BIRCH RUN HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Edwin Matzke, trustee; Edward Cusick, trustee; Gilbert Berg, president; Chester Hubinger, secretary; Arthur Schumann, treasurer SUPERINTENDENT Harry Layman MARSHALL GREENE High School Principal (Upper Right) (Right) IDA KELLER Elementary School PRINCIPALS (Above) ELNORA DOWD Intermediate School DEDICATION When School Board President Oscar Block retired last summer it marked the end of twenty one years of service to the school district as a member of the Board of Education. These twenty one years have been marked by reorganiza- tion of the Township into one school district, three building programs and the provision of a great variety of educational facilities. Mr. Block's wise counsel and loyalty to the best interests of the boys and girls of Birch Run Area Schools more than warrants the dedication of this edition of PANTHER TALES to him and the memory of his cheerful, jovial service. THE STORY OF PROJECT TALENT On March 1-2, 1960 all students and faculty members laid aside their regular school work and engulfed themselves in PRO- JECT TALENT. For two days visitors to the Birch Run High School could almost hear the mental gears turning as students struggled through the maze of tests designed to help the nation and the stu- dents. A National Inventory of Aptitudes and Abilities Project Talent has been carefully designed to fill an important national need for facts regarding the identification, development, and utilization of our human resources. This information is intended as a basis for manpower policies and as a basic resource for the many individuals responsible for the education of our children. BELOW - These students puzzling over one of Mr. Thorp's first semester tests may have looked back from PROJECT TALENT and decided that Bookkeeping wasn't so hard after all. ABOVE - Pat Weston wasn't working on PROJECT TALENT when this photo was taken but that stack of textbooks would have been helpful if available March 1-2.
