The 11 room elementary school, housing grades kindergarten through four, was first occupied in September of 1958. It was informally ded- icated at an open-house November 12, 1958. Mrs. Arthur Schumann General Office Secretary Chief Accountant East Entrance - Senior High School Architects for the new elementary school were S. A. Nurmi and Associates of Flint, Michigan. The building was erected by the Vollmer Construction Com- pany of Saginaw, Michigan. HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY STANDING: Benton, McGuorters, Stone, Psotka, Edinger, Thorp. Layman. His tenure has been marked by continued growth and progress in educational facilities and curriculum. A completely new and modern educational plant has been raised, literally from the ashes of the original building existing in 1934, the year of Mr. Layman's arrival in Birch Run. The district has grown in size through thoughtful reorganization details planned and executed with the future growth of the area in mind. A fleet of modern busses covers two townships to transport students. Cafeteria facilities for all grade levels are available. A small volume would be need- ed to detail the growth in faculty, the custodial staff, and other personnel needed to operate the school system. Play ground and athletic facilities have been increased by the acquisition of many acres of land. No area has been neglected as Superintendent Lay- man has worked and planned for the education of Birch Run's boys and girls. Unplanned, but fittingly appropriate, the 25th commencement ceremonies will mark the graduation of Superintendent Layman's son, Donald. Pictured on the left is an aerial view of the Birch Run Area Sch- ools taken in February, 1959. At the right is a view of Birch Run's newest school - an 11 room elementary building as yet unnamed. SEVENTEEN years of service to the Birch Run Area Schools came to an end July 1, 1958 with the retirement of Frank Cullen. Frank was employed July 1, 1941 as custodian. He served as Birch Run's first school bus driver and prior to his employment he had served as a school board member. . ... His efforts on behalf of the students and oyce ing athletics won him many friends who wish him happiness in his retirement. Joyce King, elementary school sec- retary, resigned November 21, 1958 and Shirley Sutto was employed to re- place her at that time. Donna Block E Inora Dowd Olive Reid Pnfew KAi loUonhor'L' SPECIAL SERVICE HONOR I Miss Elnora Dowd was honored by fellow teachers and school personnel at a dinnerparty December 8, 1958, for her twenty five year career of teaching service in Birch Run Area Schools. Miss Dowd was presented with a corsage by her first teacher, Mrs. Olive Reid. Birch Run teachers, Mrs. Patsy Muehlenbeck and Mrs. Donna Adomeit, presented Miss Dowd with a gift of luggage from the teachers and personnel. They were pupils in Miss Dowd's class when they were in the elementary grades and went on to win academic honors and become members of the faculty them- selves. Miss Dowd has been principal of the Elementary school for three years and was Intermediate school principal in 1958-59. Frank Cullen HOMEROOM AND ACTIVITIES ASSIGNMENTS TEACHERS J.
