Mary Riley was born in Adams, Tennessee, December 13, 1924. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Riley, Sr. She attended Bell High School in Adams, Tennessee. She received her B.S. Degree at Austin Peay State College and a M. A. Degree from the University of Mich- igan. She came to Birch Run in September of 1945 and married Harold Irish in 1950. They lived in Birch Run until 1955 when they moved to Mt. Morris. She taught typing and commercial courses, she was also a study hall teacher. Mrs. Irish was a member of the Birch Run High School faculty for ten and one-half years. Although most people never got to know her well, those who did found her understanding and helpful. Those who knew her, respected her as a teacher and a friend. It was such a sad loss to lose our teacher, Mrs. Mary Irish. She will always be remembered here at B. R. H. S. She died unexpectedly on January 8, 1957. Helen Courtney was born May 28, 1938, at Birch Run, Michigan. She attend- ed the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Birch Run for eight years, then she attended Birch Run High School for three years. She was a member of the Glee Club and the Keyboard Klub at Birch Run High. One outstanding thing that we all remember Helen for was her role in the Junior Play of 1956. We will always remember her as Mildred the Maid. She was a girl who had a wonderful sense of humor and was always friendly to everyone. She was a friend of every member of her class. We, the senior class, will always remember Helen as a wonderful girl and we are glad we had her for our class- mate even if it was for only a few years. Helen passed away on June 13, 1956. We shall miss her and we will also re- member Helen for being such a wonderful person. Mrs. Arthur Schumann, started working on Feb- ruary 4, 1947, in the General Office, replac- ing Donna Middleton. Under the direction of Coach John Blight, Birch Run developed a well coached football squad that won two, lost four and tied one game in a season that saw them wind up in a tie for third place in the Motor Valley Conference. In their first season in the new Conference the Panthers placed George Tanner at guard on the AI I-Conference team, Gil Berg at half back on the second team and Robert Remender at guard on the second team. Lyle Pickel- mann, Don Reed and Robert Moore earned honorable mention on the All-Con- ference team. tie. Both Gaines and Birch Run picked up nine Conference wins against one loss. The season was highlighted by a non-conference win over Michigan Lutheran Seminary, ranked No. 1 in the State in class C at the time. The Panthers were honored at an All-Conference party in New Lothrup April 2, 1957, where they were presented a sterling silver trophy by the Flint Journal. The squad was also honored at a Basketball Banquet provided by the Athletic Association at the Rainbow Inn March 28th where the following boys were awarded letters: Norman Breiler, Lyle Pickelmann, George Tanner, James Morse, Leo Bilill, Donald Layman, and Anthony Miller. Robert Moore and Fred Hauck were awarded Varsity Reserve Letters. Leo Belill and James Morse were elected co-captains of the squad at a special election at the close of the season. Hutchinson, F. Lobodzinski. BASEBALL - 1956 Coach A. W. Thorp's diamond squad completed a disastrous season in 1956 with one win against seven losses. The Panthers lost to Hemlock and Seminary twice last season. Their only victory was over New Lothrop. The losses were due to weakness in hitting, fielding, and wildness in pitching. There were only five hitters with batting averages of .250 or better. The team should improve this year. Belill, Hauck, and Berg with some pitch- ing experience last season should be better this year. G. Tanner and L. Pickelmann were last year's best hitters, they will be back this year. The infield should be much better this year because of the experience gained last year. The win over New Lothrop in the last game of last season was the outstanding event of all the games played. Last year was the first losing season that Coach Thorp had in about ten years. Letter winners were: Robert Benes, Norm Breiler, Gilbert Berg, Leo Belill, George Tanner, Fred Hauck, Robert Garfield, Robert Remender, Dale Woolworth, Larry Hadsall, Leonard Pickelmann, Gerald King, Ken Duby, Anthony Miller, Herman Mat- zke, Claude Tanner, Max Polzin.
