Thirty four members of the class of 1956 saw this skyline scene from the steps of the Aquarium - they saw other scenes too - night clubs - hotels - theaters - shops - and many others. And there were probably a few scenes in hotel rooms that sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Thorp didn't see that were interesting tool FRANKENMUTH SERVICE Shellubrication - Washing - Accessories Main St. and Bridge, Frankenmuth, Michigan GALSTERER MOTOR SALES Ford Sales Service 24 Hour Wrecker Service @La55 Prophecy As we look in the future what do we see Mary Jean Ackerman is as strict as can be, Not only the kids at school does she teach But Kenny and her own all hear the same speech. Roy now is a farmer, this we can see He lives in the country, can this possibly be? He works like a dog on his run down shack Shirley's left for Missouri, but she's soon coming back. Standing at the air terminal surrounded by men We see Nancy Bamberg has done it again. An old maid she said she was destined to be But we find Nancy sitting on every co-pilot's knee. Jean never went out with any Tom, Dick or Harry But she looked around good and finally found Jerry, Now they are married and live on the farm Jean still hauls garbage but has retained all her charm. Bob Benes a youth who was college bound Cool and smart with no ups and downs. Now sits by the fire at early dawn Reciting many fables of little fawns. In a little white cottage not far away We find our poor Beverly happy and gay. She works like a dog to keep Norm happy every day She's married to him now, and that's how she's paid. Now we look in the future and see our great poet Sonnet, song, and ode, wouldn't you know it, Don Daenzer has turned out to be another Shakespeare His long hair poems we never cease to hear. Mary Bell's a spinster, no man has been found It seems that the minister is still looking around town. Now she's found a man all of her choosing And now she's sure she won't be losing. Deep in the woods in a little brown hut You could find Ken and Mary, and a thoroughbred mutt, Ken's a great sportsman, hunts fowl and game When he misses a rabbit, the dog gets the blame. Irene and Dick have now settled down In a little frame house on the outskirts of town, Dick works very hard all day on the job And at night comes home to the eight little Traubs. Bob and Sandra are married, a perfect two Each of them always has plenty to do. Bob works in the snop and Sandra at home They each have Chevies, both littered with chrome. As we look into our crystal ball We see Judy Duranseau leading us all, Instead of traveling, as she had planned She is making her living, directing a band. Compliments of BRIDGEPORT HOME BAKERY CLIO STATE BANK We Specialize in Wedding and Birthday Cakes 6169 Dixie Highway - Phone 43922 Clio, Michigan Member of FDIC 1 (?Lcl55 Ptopltecy (2on t. 1 i r Oh! The life of Riley Peggy Eagan leads She's got no worries, got no needs. She's got lots of mulla, got lots of men There are no places she hasn't been. Bob and Lois are finally married Too long, said Bob, had they already tarried, Garf bought out Hermies, that now is their home But though Bob enjoys it, you should hear Lois moan. r We see that Shirley Gaunt roams no more She's the new disc jockey for Pace Music store. She spins Davey Crockett day after day For such a hard job she receives little pay! i s As she sets her feet tapping althrough the day We see Shirley Greene has the lead in a plav. At night she is tired and weary, but not for long For she is waiting for Roy to sing their song. r r Look in the future and here is a start We see Ruth and Glenn never did part. She still writes those letters, one every night And hopes with Glenn her future will be bright. ■ r We see Bob in Texas, a sergeant is he He chose his career in the grand old Army, He shouldn't be a sergeant, but some say he ought'er It seems Hicky married the general's daughter. r Over the horizon from far and wide Comes Becky Kaufman with great pride. Quick and slick in the Britton car Wealth which starts the day with no mar. r r 1 now see a house in the country near And gosh all the noise, are those children 1 hear? Gerry has a family of nice girls and boys But as before, they still make too much noise. i r Each Thursday night be sure to tune in And see Dale Martin who is a real champion. He won the heavyweight title just a year ago As he knocked out his opponent with one hard-felt blow. r Up every morning at the crack of dawn Herman Matzke is just crossing his lawn. He plows the fields day after day Combines the wheat and harvests the hay. r i Get out your tux men, and ladies your gowns We're stepping out for a fling around town. We'll stop to hear Nellie Lou tooting her flute In the philharmonic symphony she is so young and so cute. r r Tom McNamara now lives in Washington, D. C. He's a politician, as good as can be, Tom's gained in weight, has gotten quite stout But he can't Run for election, cause he'll get tired out. f Compliments of BABCOCK'S SUPER MARKET BIRCH RUN HATCHERY Clio, Michigan Birch Run, Michigan Babcock's Realty Service CLASS PROPHECY CON'T. Donna Nass we find has a family so fair Ten little Indians, all with brown hair. From morning till night she hears the war whoops While her husband is away testing Chevy coupes. Wanda and Timothy are now on the farm It seems that he finally fell for her charm, Wanda's up early while Tim's still in bed She earns all the living, at least that's what's said. Here in the crystal ball we see a great riding stable And Joyce Papineau in a beautiful mink sable, She lives in a brick mansion way up on a hill She thrives like a queen while Dutch foots the bill. Fifteen years hence we see Lois Papineau Up in the North Woods wearing a red wool mackinaw. The Garfield clan has grown quite large When they take a boat trip, they now use a barge. There he stands so big and tall Max Polzin in the veterinarian stall. Tending to the mules, the cows, and the sheep Unfortunately, they'll soon be lying in a heap. Jean Price we notice has her degree In nursing she's known as Simon Legree, She carries a torch for men patients we hear But with all women she makes things rather clear. Five miles east and a half mile south Ursula and Wally are still keeping house, Ursula is busy from morning till night Sweeping and dusting to keep things bright. We find that our boy Ed has what it takes And one of the country's finest soldiers he makes. See him there on the battlefield now Ed remarks, This beats pushing a plow. Oh, Jerry we see is a hard working man He's trying to save all the money he can. Already he's planning to buy a new car He's going to Burt, will he get very far? Claude Tanner is very prosperous on his new farm He has a house, grainery, milk house, and barn. He works all day and half the night Trying to keep his farm managed right. Down below the border in a little white house We see Doris Trinklein and her happy spouse. Dale keeps her busy doing all the chores It seems he won't stir himself to go outdoors. Down in Kentucky on a very large ranch Barbara Wilder teaches her horses to dance. Her horses have performed all over the country And have made Barbara as proud as proud she can be. Dale Woolworth has turned to wrestling as a profession He represented the United States at the last Olympic session. He fought against the Russians, the Poles and the Swedes And received various medals for his heroic deeds. A VETERAN TEACHER RETIRES Sometimes books are dedicated to individuals and sometimes individuals dedicate their lives to service to others. This is the case this year when we are dedicating PANTHER TALES to Mrs. Olive Reid, a veteran of more than 35 years of teaching in schools of Saginaw County, and a long-time member of the Birch Run Area Schools faculty. Mrs. Reid started many members of the class of 1956 on their educational careers and has instructed three generations of Birch Run School students. Mrs. Reid was honored at a faculty dinner June 3, 1955 given by her colleagues. The pictures on this page were taken at the dinner. Mrs. Reid was presented with a gold watch from the faculty by Elementary Prin- cipal Elnora Dowd. Miss Dowd, a twenty three year veteran on the teaching staff herself, stated that Mrs. Reid had been her first teacher and also told of her outstand- ing abilities as a teacher and her remarkable record of missing only five days of class room attendance in 35 years. Mrs. Reid's career as an elementary instructor started in 1909 at the Deneen School in Maple Grove Township where she taught a nine month term for $35.00 per month. Other teaching assignments, all in Saginaw County, have been at Sloan, Burt, Becker, McGregor, Ross, and Birch Run schools. Since 1945 she has taught first grade and Kindergarten classes in Birch Run. Her long career as a teacher was interrupted by one ten-year retirement. Mrs. Reid was particularily adept as a teacher of reading. Miss Dowd has stated that she should be teaching other teachers how to work in this difficult field. Super- intendent of Schools Harry Layman attributes her success to a desire to help children, enthusiasm for her work, and just plain hard work. Parents of first graders and kindergarten pupils also entertained Mrs. Reid at an afternoon party. SPOUTS I at lity 7oot6all STANDING: L. to R. Asst. Coach J. Psotka, R. Cassiday, R. Remender, D. The Pan- thers continued their winning ways with a 25-12 thumping of Saginaw St. Joseph. In a tight battle Birch Run and MSD battled to a 6-6 deadlock as both teams continued unbeaten. Flint Holy Redeemer broke the Panther skein of five undefeated games by a 13-0 decision. The Panthers were then defeated by a smaller New Lothrop eleven 12-7 in the up- set of the year. Evidently this loss aroused the Panther gridders as they soundly trounced Flint Hoover at the annual homecoming game 57-0 before a large crowd in a rain drenched contest. In the season's finale Birch Run, playing without the services of George Tanner and Bob Benes, was soundly beaten by a strong Hemlock crew 37-0. The Panthers' season record showed 3 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Dale Martin was the leading ground gainer as well as scorer followed by Bob Benes in both departments. At a football banquet sponsored by the Birch Run Lions Club the Panther gridders received their awards and Bob Benes was elected team captain. Paul Dizzy Trout, one time Tiger pitching great, served as guest speaker for the affair. Varsity letter winners were: Leo Bel ill, Robert Benes, Gilbert Berg, Norman Breiler, Kenneth J. Duby, Dale Martin, James Morse, Max Polzin, Robert Remender, Fred Reuther, James Smith, Claude Tanner, George Tanner, Dale Woolworth, Fred Hauck (Mgr.), Ken Hickmott (Mgr.), Robert Kenny (Mgr.). Reserve award winners were: Robert Andrews, Raphael Cassiday, Duane Coppoc, Jerry Ferguson, Larry Hadsall, Richard Louchart, Duane Miller, Robert Moore, Leonard Pickelmann, George Randick, James Reuther, Donald Reed, John Tanner. Honorable mention went to James Kuhl and Jerry King. I allittj SasIcQtltall TOP ROW: L. to R. Coach J. A. Vitany, G. Tanner, N. Breiler, C. Tanner, R. Andrews, Mgr. D, Reed. BOTTOM ROW: R. The long time mastery of the Grovers over the Panthers was broken when Birch Run captured a thrilling 43 to 42 victory at Maple Grove and trounced St. Mikes 69 to 43 at Birch Run. Millington also fell before the Panthers in both games of a home and home series. The only additional victory Birch Run could manage in a 5 won - 11 lost season was a 59 to 42 conquest of New Lothrop on the Panthers home court. Robert Garfield captured scoring honors with 194 points on 83 field goals and 28 free throws. Norman Breiler was close on his heels with 186 points and Leo Belill, workhorse guard, came in 3rd scoring 150 points.
