ADMINISTRATION Tf HARRY LAYMAN M. A. Univ. of Mich. SUPERINTENDENT To The Class of ’ 54 Dear Friends: That long awaited day is nearly here. Soon you can say, “I am a graduate of Birch Run High School.” That day will be a happy day but it will also be mixed with sadness, for you will be leaving those friends and the life you have come to know so well. You will be taking your place as a citizen in an adult world. Our hope is that you will always be a good citizen, a citizen that your family, school, church and community will be proud to claim. This Annual is an example of the teamwork your class has practiced. You have sponsored its publication and deserve much credit for its success. You will need to continue this spirit of cooperation in the years to come and I feel you have chosen a fine class motto in, Better Faithful than Famous.” The students and faculty wish you success and happiness for all the years to come. THE STUDENT COUNCIL The student council, instituted for the first time at Birch Run High School this year, is the representative governing body of the school, to which the school administration delegates as much responsibility as it is felt can be carried successfully. It is composed of the class officers elected by the student body. Through it both the faculty and student body can offer criticisms and suggestions. Students are urged to bring their problems and any ideas to the council or members of the council. It is hoped that during the coming year the council can assume the responsibility for parties and extra-curricular activities suggested or requested by members of the council, the student body, or the faculty advisors. It is tentatively planned that the student council will sponsor the cheer leaders, conduct cheerleader elections, and conduct pep meetings. FRANKENMUTH NEWS Job Printing as You Like it When You Want It Publishers of the BIRCH RUN RECORD HUT - TWO - FIVE RESTAURANT Good Food 701 N. Mill St. Clio CLASS PROPHECY We, of the class of ’Fifty-four, Desire to open the future’s door; Having abnormal curiosity, We want to know where our classmates will be. So, with the aid of our crystal ball. Our magic wand, our insight, all-- We’ll travel ahead to ’ Seventy-four, Just twenty years and not a year more. A little white cottage with roses we see, And Papa Don Childs with a son on each knee. He’s just returned from a grueling day In the contracting business of making his way. Near him stands Thelma in apron of white. Keeping two of her daughters from trying to fight. All twelve of their kids and Thelma and Don Live in this house with the roses upon. Going a little bit west of Birch Run, We find that Glenn Conner has joined in the fun. On chemicals et cetera he can give us a slant, For he’s head of the Taymouth Dow Chemical Plant. Much farther away from Birch Run, you know. Is our man of the world, Gene Duranseau. He’s finally succeeded in routing out “Ike”, And, As President, speaks from the White House “mike’’. We see Nancy Fent’s kept abreast of the times, And returned at last to the scene of her crimes. She’s back at Birch Run, the high school, we confess, And teaching, of all subjects, English no less! Grease monkey, Ken Gray, has turned at last To something he thinks will make money fast. He’s slinging hash at Cafe Greasy Spoon! ’Twill be his own place someday very soon. Wedding bells rang for Rosemary Grew, And now she has a child or two. Of modeling clothes she has made a career, On T.V. her sponsor is Frankenmuth Beer! “Golden Throat Annie” is the name that they give her And because of her voice men have jumped in the river. Ann Hubinger tops the Metropolitan crew Of mop women! At least we’ll give her her due. Another gal whose heart sore did yearn For her childhood home, and so did return. Is Carol Langley who’s teaching the golden rule To first graders who go to the Rottiers school. Always good at stringing a line, Carol Ann Morse is now doing fine. As Duranseau’s campaign manager, she’s made a big hit! In helping him win, she sure did her bit. FECHTER HARDWARE Compliments of Frigidaire - Easy UNIVERSAL ENGINEERING Frankenmuth • “Rich” Leslie Frankenmuth, Michigan Continued Donna Muehlfeld of the tresses of gold Is rich as Croesus--at least we've been told. She now owns a factory, ’tis nothing to hide. Where they manufacture new types of peroxide. Emma Reis, of whom we’re quite proud, Though she’s always been very shy in a crowd, To foreign lands has followed her star, And is a missionary in foreign fields far. About Chancey Schmidt, we’re happy to tell For that one certain girl, he never fell. One thing, though, we’re happy to say, He finally bought a new Chevrolet! Bob Schmunk is still working to graduate From high school, that is, though it is a bit late. But Hermie’s decided to take a vacation. And Bob’s inherited his recreation. Bill after Carole has always kept running, And now Miss Schmitzer is Mrs. Dunning. She’s just returned from Atlantic City Where, as Mrs. America, she looked very pretty. Deciding that she liked Birch Run pretty well, Doris Schram decided her house not to sell. She’s stayed at home and taken up knittin’ And organized a local “Bundles for Britain”. Four years of college and even more And Dale Schumann’s returned to a local store. Ah, yes, as pharmacist great He’s bought out pop Brandei, we’re glad to relate. Betty Snellenberger known as chatterbox queen Is now heading campaigns to keep Birch Run clean. She’s taken, because her career’s been quite checkered, Mrs. Sartwell’s place on the BIRCH RUN RECORD. Glen Snelly has an unusual occupation One, to which, high school has no relation, In training new barbers, he makes good money But some of his haircuts, are, to say the least, funny. Glen Tanner’ has finally build his dream nest On top of the hill, where at night he seeks rest. In Birch Run, he, too, has held firm his ground, And become the head pig farmer for miles around. Delores Wilson, we’re sorry to hear, Has maintained her queer ways year after year. She’s been hired by some nefarious louse To drive Mr. Boeskool into the bug house. Again we go South to Arkansas Where we find Nina Whitlatch with her “Paw” Nina is used to a great deal of noise, For she’s nursing Truman’s poor soldier boys. Don Witkop, we see, is one of the few From our class who’s established a record quite new. He’s at the A.C., where he’s worked many a year; His absence and tardiness record exceeds none, we hear. Continued Norma Zuellig, too, has become settled down To being a housewife very near town. But her buying new clothes has drived her spouse. Poor Don! right smack into the bug house. And now we come to our man about town, “Homah” Harpst, for whom each girl wears her best gown. He’s the town’s leading bachelor guy In Blackmar township he catches their eye. We know now where another boy is, Also the teacher who’s at typing a whiz Glenn Harris and Mrs. Irish have gone to “Kaintuck” Where at moonshinin’ whiskey they make a fast buck. Finding she was about to be left on the shelf Betty Hobson’ s made a big name for herself. Head of Hobson’s “Lonely Heart’s Club” she’d doin’ fine. Also at dropping lonely soldiers a line. We also find the class’ handsomest man Has gone just about as far as one can. Senor Larry 0’Henry’0 and his “hot” guitar Can be seen on T. V. and heard near and far. Deciding that baby sitting is right up her alley Dorothy Hickmott has decided to get very “pally” With Don and Thelma and their family So Dotty sits while the Child’s have a spree. So into the present we now return We hope our predictions you will not spurn And as the future years you soon view You’ll find that these prophecies all will come true. H. Oct. 7th and 8th were for most of the students a holiday, but not for us. We sang a program for one of the district meetings of the M.E.A. in Saginaw. This performance was followed by an appearance for our parents at the open house held by the school during National Education week. Our next performance was a program of Christmas music for the Masons at the annual Christmas celebration of their home for the Aged at Alma, Michigan on Dec. 6th. We furthered our Christmas in song by caroling through the streets of Birch Run and by participating in the school’s annual Christmas program. Christmas over, we found ourselves at work on numbers for the vocal festival. We were hostss to the festival participants this year and hosts of choristers filled our halls and auditorium on April 6th. We were pleased with the superior rating given our glee club by the three judges. And so, as our year drew to a close, we had several more engagements to fill - the state festival, and exchange assembly with Merrill High School, our spring concert, a program at Taymouth Church, and our final appearance at the Baccalaureate services. The Panthers came close to winn- ing when they played Saginaw St. Joseph’s to a 6-6 tie in Saginaw. The seasons record: no wins, five losses, and one tie. One of the high lights of the season the night game with Michigan Lutheran Seminary at Veterans Memorial Park in Saginaw. Again Captain Glen Tanner was the outstanding player. He was high scorer for the season with 13 points with Harris close at his heels with six. All in all the squad did a pretty good job and when next season rolls around they should show the results of another year of apprenticeship. Coach Vitany should receive special recognition for his work in converting the boys into clean but tough football players. Most observers of local athletics feel that it will take at least three full seasons to teach the fundamentals and build a background of experience that will win games. BASKETBALL 1953-54 The 1953-54 basketball season was high-lighted by the Panther’s win over Millington in the semi-finals of the Class C District tournament. This enabled them to play in the finals against a powerful Mayville quintet. Since the Panthers played as an independent team it enabled them to meet three new teams on their schedule. Although the competition was keen the Panthers came through with a winning season with ten victories against nine defeats. They defeated Our Lady, Merrill Sacred Heart, and School for the Deaf twice; and beat Montrose, Saginaw Sacred Heart, Hemlock, and Millington once. The high scorer for the season again was Glenn Harris. He came through with a fine 17.4 average and set a new school scoring record with 314 points. He broke his own record of last year by 11 points and made it more impressive by playing in fewer games. The Junior Varsity also had a good year with 11 victories against seven defeats. The high scorer was Roy Andrews who played a consistent brand of good basketball to average 10 points in each of 18 games. THE LETTER WINNERS-Harris, Witkop, Hauck, Childs, Capt. The league disbanded at the end of the year due to the formation of the new Gratiot-Saginaw C Conference. Although their record is not impressive, with a few breaks they might have turned some of the losses into wins. The team ended the season with one win and seven losses in regular season play. They played four practice games in the fall and one sophomore game at the end of the season with the Frankenmuth tenth graders. The Panther’s only win was over Merrill, but they came close to beat- ing Seminary, Maple Grove and Frankenmuth in the regular season. The only thing that kept the Panthers from winning was their lack of hitting, of the regulars only Sproul hit over 300 and only Harris and Schmidt managed to hit in the .200 bracket. TRACK TRACK 1953 The 1953 track season opened with the Panthers taking on the Arthur Hill Sophomores, April 8. Inexperience was the main drawback of the Panther squad with Glenn Harris and James Adomeit getting the only first places, those in the 440 yard dash and the 220 yard dash respectively. The score was 84-25 in favor of the Lumberjacks. On May 12 the thinclads traveled to the Arthur Hill field again for the big event of the season, the Little Six Conference meet. Seminary copped the trophy, scoring 49 points, Maple Grove was second with 35 and Merrill, Birch Run and Hemlock trailed with 30%, 16 and 12% respectively. The Panthers last meet was with a strong Michigan Lutheran Seminary squad on Birch Run’s home track. The Panthers could score only 49 points which was not enough the Seminary thinclads who picked up 60. High scor- ers for Birch Run were James Adomeit with 11 points and Ronnie Rottiers with six. Glenn Harris took Birch Run’s only first place when he romped home first in the 440 yard dash. One of the highlights of the season was the inter-class meet. The Junior class ran away with the meet scoring 63 points out of a possible 108. The seniors tied the freshmen for second place with 22 and the soph- omores finished last with only one point. Letter winners for the season were: Glen Tanner, Donald Witkop, Donald Childs, James Adomeit, Glenn Harris, Ronald Rottiers, and Arthur Cicalo. Kenneth Gray and Eugene Duranseau received manager’s letters. (Shown in the picture above is Robert McNamara, class of 1952, who holds the school record in the 180 yard low hurdles.) The visitors jumped to an early lead of 8 to 0 and the Cubs couldn’t recover quickly enough to over- come it. The seventh graders followed in much the same pattern as did the Cubs. The little Cubs fell only to Beecher 40-30 while scoring victories over Millington and Zilwaukee. The seventh grade squad finished with a four won and one lost record. JUNIOR HIGH INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL The Birch Run Junior High Intramural League play came to a close on March 8 with a contest between Michigan and Michigan State to decide the playoff champs. The struggle was won by Michigan when they came from behind, scoring five points in the last quarter, to win 28-26. The rally was highlighted by Larry Hadsall sinking a long shot in the last minute and two free shots by Leo Belill. Norman Breiler kept his team in the game by scoring 17 points. Michigan, although beating M.S.C. three times during the regular season, lost the last game for the championship in overtime 29-25.
