Our teacher was Miss Ina Phlieger, The pupils were: Sherry Yelter, Jackie Lee White, Dorolyn Strobel, Io Ann Snyder, Keith Slckafoose, Peggy Sell, Jerry Seese, Robert Ripley, Beverly Raber, Dick Norwood, Pete Minear, Judy Lan- caster, Earl Geist, Phyllis Garrison, Linda Fox, Sharon Crago, Karen Crago, Dale Carroll, Mabel Bolinger, and Tom Callison, August, 1947 This year when we came back to school, we found that Phyllis Garrison, Keith Sickafoose, and Karen Crago were no longer with us, but Bryce Whelchel came to join our class, Mrs, Hazel Eby was our teacher in the second grade. We felt quite superior to the first grade. August, 1948 We came back to school with eighteen members in our class and Mrs, Swlhart was our teacher. Mrs. Swihart was more than a teacher to us, she was a friend. She would invite two of us at a time to go home with her and stay all night, This year Jackie Lee White and Jerry Seese left us. August, 1949 ln the fourth grade one student was gained. She was Nancy Furnace, We set up a grocery store in the back of our room, and we had great fun pretending we were efficient store keepers. This year Mrs. Swlhart wasn't able to go on teaching, so we had two substitute teachers, Mrs, Elaine Schen- kel and Mrs, Frances McDaniels. August, 1950 During the fifth grade, Pete Minear, Sharon Crago, and Sherry Yelter moved away, and Ted Campbell, Dorothy Elkins, and Harold Finton came to our class. Mr. Whitacre was our teacher. We elected monitors and safety patrol leaders, We took field trips to Fort Wayne and Bluffton. The boys had a basketball team and played other schools. We also made scrapbooks for the Red Cross to send to the Soldiers Home at Marion. August, 1951 In the sixth grade Sharon Crago came back to our class Mr, Whitacre was our teacher again, At the end of this year we had a farewell party. We went to the movie 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. At this party we had our first datesg the couples were: Linda Fox and Dale Carroll, Mabel Bolinger and Dlck Norwood, Judy Lancaster and Bryce Whelchel, Dorolyn Strobel and Ted Campbell and Beverly Raber and Tom Calllson. We also had a sixth grade graduation ln the school gymnasium. Mr. Sam Blrk was the speaker and we were very proud to have graduated to the seventh grade. M-1 - w August, 1952 Being in the seventh grade, we found it was somewhat dif- ferent than the first six grades, but we soon got adjusted to going without any recess, This year Beverly Raber left and Mary Jane Andrews and Larry Coble joined our class. We elected class officers and had two class parties. Our spon- sor was Miss Williams. now Mrs. Rethlake. August, 1953 In the eighth grade we lost one student, Mary Jane Andrews. Annette Newsome and Sue Reeves came to our class, and Beverly Raber came back in the middle of the year. This year we had three sponsors, Mr. Garber, Mis. Paddock, and Mrs, Burkhart, This was also the year that Mrs. Burkhart asked us girls why we thought we were so sophisticated. US, sophisticated at thlrteenlll???l ll August, 1954 In the Freshman class our new sponsor was Mr. Ward. This year Bryce Whelchel moved away and Beverly Raber left again, We had our first class party at the school house and went bowling at Huntington for our sec- ond party, We had Freshman Initiation at the beginning of the year. What a sight we were! I I The girls in our class joined the Sun Shine Society this year. Jack White came back to our class this year. August, 1955 Our Sophomore class sponsor was Mr. Tilson King. We went to North Manchester to go bowling for our class party. This year some of the class members had their first experience in the all-school play, The Canni- bal Queen, At the end of this year we ordered our class rings, In the summer we had an Ice Cream Social at the school and we also had a swimming party at Center Lake. August, 1956 Our Junior year in hlgn school was very busy. Mrs. Swales was our sponsor. At the beginning of the year we got our class rings. Of course. we were very proud. We sold magazine subscriptions, sold candy and ice cream in the candy room every noon, and sold candy, ice cream, pop, and pop corn at the home baseball and basketball games to make money for our trip, In the spring we had a class play, Arizona Dude Ranch, and a bake sale at Hunting- ton, We also planned the Junior-Senior Reception at North Manchester. In Mrs. Swales English class this year, we almost had a fatal accident when our class- mate, Ted Campbell, fell off his chair, In this English class shoes, sweaters, books, and purses were always accidently falling out the windowsg much to the disturbance of Mrs, Weist's room. We thought the floor in the recreation room was slanted because the shuffle-board disks kept rolling off the tables and down the floorQThis was much to the disturbance of Mrs. Swales.J August, 1957 Seniors at last! ! And we thought we would never make it. Mrs. Swales was our sponsor again this year. Ted Campbell moved to Andrews. Early in the fall we got our Senior Pictures. We sponsored a Waffle and Sausage Supper and a Christmas Program to earn money for our Senior Trip to Washing- ton D. C. and New York, We got our commencement invitations in January and ordered our caps and gowns for the baccalaureate and commencement, Part of the members of the class were also in the Junior-Senior play, Little Shepherd From Kingdom Come, directed by Mr. Bittner. We all agree our Senior year was our busiest year planning our commence- ment, and Junior-Senior Trip, We are proud that of the twelve graduating Seniors, ten of us started out together in the first grade. Sul- tana, This is the start of a world-wide cruise to gather information for Look Magazine. First on the agenda is lunch at the Captain's table, As I arrive, I notice that the Captain's face seems familiar. As his wife enters the room, I saw that it was Mrs, Emie Slessman, the former Mabel Bollnger, We talked over old times and recalled the days when she was still in High School, writing to Ernie. She told us that her seventeen year old son, Emie Jr. , was planning to join the Navy, too. After lunch, we decided to find some activity on deck. The Social Director, Miss Judy Lancaster, seemed to be quite busy with several handsome young men who just didn't seem to understand the game of deck tennis. She was rather preoccupied, so we didn't stop to talk to her. The first stop on the schedule was at the beautiful island of Hawaii, We were stroll- ing along the beach at Waikiki and saw two American sailors surrounded by lovely native girls. Well, what do you know! It was Dick Norwood and Dale Carroll! Of course, we couldn't get close enough to talk to them either, We didn't have time to wait at the end of the line? We retumed to the Sultana because it was time to leave Hawaii. The next stop was foggy London. We decided to look around for some interesting gift shops. We found one, and were looking around, when we bumped into another member of the class of 58. It was Larry Coble and his wife, the former Marge Wohlford. Larry told us that he was still farming on his 5, 000 acre farm and that he and Marge were taking their first vacation away from home. Marge was looking for gifts to take back to the four grandparents who were taking care of their five children. We left Marge and Larry in the shop and retumed to the boat, We arrived in Paris, France, where the weather was considerably better than foggy London. Paris is noted, among other things, for its food. looking around for a restaurant, we saw another class member of '58, It was Dorolyn Strobel, Since we didn't have to return to the Sultana right away, she asked us to join her for lunch. As usual, we talked over old times. Dorolyn was doing quite well as a fashion designer and was in Paris for the summer to pick up the latest styles. She also told us that she hadn't gotten married because she had been too busy with her career, but that she had been dating a French millionaire. Whoops, it's time to leave Paris, so we said our good-byes and hurried back to the boat. We arrived in time to see the passengers coming back. There were quite a few getting on for the first time at Paris. Among them, we recognized Linda Fox. We stopped her to see how things had passed for her since she graduated. Linda said that she was going to meet her husband in New York after she had taken a few week's vacation on our pleasure cruise. She was sure that her husband, who was on Wall Street, would not appreciate the fact that she had spent too much of his hard earned money on Paris fashions. Now we travel on to romantic Venice. As soon as we got off the boat, we went to the Grand Canal, We spent a lot of time riding in a gondola. We passed quite a few other gondolas and were surprised to see a couple waving to us. Why, it was Tom Cal- lison and his wife, the former Norma Urschel! As the two gondolas passed, we had time only to say Hello and note the two small children seated behind them. Back to the boat again. The next few days of the trip passed uneventfully, The next place the boat docked was at Hong Kong, China, What a place for sight- seeing! We were wandering around the city, looking at all the unusual things around us, when we ran into Sue Reeves! We asked her what in the world she was doing inChina Sue told us she was here to visit JoAnn Snyder who was teaching in a Sunday School Mission in a small village outside of Hong Kong. She invited us to go out with her and, on the way, she told us more about herself. She said that she could stay only a short time because she had to return to the States to help her husband in his Post Office. She was so proud that he had worked up from being just a mailman to running the New York Main Branch Post Office. When we arrived at the Mission School, JoAnn took a few minutes off to talk over old times with us, We asked her how long she had been in China and she replied that this will be her seventh year. She had also spent five years in India. Time was getting short again, so we had to leave the oriental city. We found things slightly different in Japan. In Tokyo, we saw quite a few Amer- ican servicemen. We passed an Army hospital and saw a white-clad nurse who looked rather familiar. We stopped her and found that it was Sharon Crago. She told us that she had just been transferred to the Tokyo hospital from Thule, Greenland. Sharon had to be on duty in a few minutes so we wished her -luck on her career and left, Senior Class Prophecy fCon'tj Now, we're homeward bound. We reached the Mother Continent after long days of smooth sailing. The U. S. S. Sultana docked, we checked through Customs, and started to drive back to the office. We stopped at a service station and were enveloped in a cloud of dust! When it cleared, we saw a hot rod, Who was driving? Jack White! He hopped over the door, which refused to open, and came over to talk to us. We asked him how he had gotten along during the years that had passed since he had gotten out of school. Jack told us that he spent most of his spare time with his hot rod but that he also still did a little bit of dating, His favorite pastime was taking his girlfriends riding in the hot rod. He also said that he is stlll dating Norma Deemer, Whoops, there goes Jack, leaving another cloud of dust! I must say that this has been a very eventful trip with surprising meetings with the members of the class of '58, SENIOR CLASS WILL I, Tom Callison, will my ability to get the mall to Tom West. Rooney's Hatchery PROLOGUE Usually, something like this is written in the first pages of a high school annual but in this case we felt it more fitting to have a prologue rather than an introduction, It is always a little sad when something good passes from your life, no matter how necessary the passing may be and no matter how much better the replacement may be. To know that the Tigers will never again trod the hardwood floors of the county, the Bipponet will never again go to the presses, that the halls of the high school will never again echo to the voices and the clamor of the upperclassmen. This is to know that Bippus High School is no more. This is to have some idea of what Poe meant, Quoth the Raven, Nevermorel It is with mixed emotions that we present this, our final Bipponet, to you, We take pride in what we think is a job well done. We are looking forward to entering a new phase of our educational life, We are sad at leaving behind us all the old, famil- iar things which over the years we have grown to love. It is with feelings of nostalgia, anticipation, and pride that we conclude this 1958 Bipponet, We hope you have enjoyed our offering this year and will forgive our being a little sentimental.
