Christmas 1985 was highlighted by the first annual Christ- mas tree lighting. Located between the newly constructed University Art Gallery in Marshburn Hall and the Rose Me- morial Library, the school Christmas tree was decorated with red and white lights. Sponsored by the Student Alumni Association the event program began at dusk with traditional Christmas carols sung by the University Singers. As the tree was lit, the Uni- versity Singers were then joined in singing by passers-by who had gathered. Christmas was truly in the air. Finally, after more singing, the evening was topped off with the candle lighting. As each participant held a candle, a flickering flame was passed from one person to another. Each was reminded of the important role they played in God ' s purpose to spread the light of Christ to those around them in the up coming it (

Commencement will always be the highlight of any educa- tional institution. Biola students representing some 24 differ- ent majors were honored as charter university graduates in the fall and spring commencement exercises. Graduates from the School of Arts, Sciences, and Professions, Talbot Theological Seminary and Rosemead School of Psychology were involved in the ceremonies. Fall graduates met in the Biola University gymnasium in December. Graduates were challenged by E.V. Hill, pastor of local Los Angeles ethnic church. Following his address, Dr Cook honored Mr, Hill with an honorary degree. Spring commencement was held on Metzger lawn, being usually the larger of the two commencement ceremonies The weather looked clear as over 250 graduates stepped out of the Biola Bubble and received their diplomas. 28
