DEDICATION TG DR. NISHIDA I'll treat you students the way I want to be treated . . . l'll take you as far along as you want to go -1 the sky's the limit, stated George Nishida revealing not only his educational philoso- phy but the whole pattern and pace of the Sociol- ogy department. Nishida, presently chairman of this department has seen this particular major materialize and become o reality in eight years. Working exclu- sively with a written blue print plan, his accom- plishments now include five well-qualified faculty members, working closely with the Missions Department, and over 60 Sociology maiors. Elaborating on his philosophy, Nishida stated further that he considers himself also as a student of sociology. We're all students. Maybe my function can be described as a catalyst, guide or someone who can bring up pointed questions but I always like to get back to the basic question, 'What do you think?' Real learning does not happen until a student can sit in a class listening and absorbing, then going back to the dorm recalling facts two hours later iotting them down, Nishida continued. He would much rather see The faces instead of tops of heads of students taking copious notes. Sociology is not a static course in Nishida's opinion. Everyday something's happening . . . lt's dynamic and moving. Ranging from probation officers to teaching, to missionary work, opportu- nities for Sociology maiors are innumerable. Biola is a unique school. I like the students and I can talk to anyone of them on any topic, Nishida openly reflected. The Sociology professor attended the downtown L.A. campus of Biola from i951 to 1953. He received his BA from Pacific Nazarene College and was planning on going into the ministry. After serving in the Army and receiving teachers' training there, Nishida went on to Cal State LA for his Masters. He is presently working on his doctorate. In his own matter-of-fact manner, Nishida has brought a higher academic level to Biola as a Christian liberal arts college. Because of his hard work, a Sociology maior and department has been formed under his leadership. As one student stated, It gives me hope to know there's teachers around like him. The yearbook staff is more than honored to dedicate Biolan I973 to George Nishida. IJ ir,
