'Nineteen hundred seventy-one marks the fulfillment of 'a dream envisioned nearly a decade ago. In June, the fiitsjt class oh Baccalaureate nurses graduates with .the Bachelbr:-of Science Degree, afterlhaving completed antivfe year program. This .program was the dream ,of Miss .Leonie V. Squbirou, which came tot life through Sher tremendous contribution of long hours of devoted work and sacri- tice. Miss Soubirou's life work started when she was a .studentt at the Bible Itnstitute of Los Angeles. In the 'first semesterof her freshman year, the dean of womenl llediher to the Lord, adding a new purpose to her stu- dies. After ggraduatjng from B.1.0.L.A., she worked diligently to,ob'tain many other degrees: R.N., Emanuel .Hospitialg 'B.A., Allbany Collegeg1P.Hl.,N., University .dT'Orego.n Medical Schoolg MA., New 'York 5Univer- sityg Administrative Credential, University of Cali- fornia aft Lossfxngeles. Starting her' career as a nursing instructor at Whit- worth College, 'she later went Ito Multnomah School ofllthe Bible tot teach missions and health, and 'later still to Hollywood Presbyterian School of Nursing, until the Lord ledl her back to Biola. ln. 1945, she pio- neered the nursing program by becoming dean of the newly formed School, of Missionary Medicine. Later, this school became the department oflnursing, and Miss Soubirou became the head ,of that department. 'Work- ing many hours overtime, she has been very active in getting the' nursing .programg endorsed and tinancially supported. The ladies in her program deeply respect the example oil' dedication set for them 'by Miss Soubirou,Aandl are highly spoken lofi in the four hospitals where they have clinical' training. Evelyn M. Hamil, fR.N., of U.S'.C. Medical' Center isaid in a letter, We'v,c alwaysjknown youfd haveiolnly A + quality students . . . llnu addition ltb her many tasks at Biola, Miss Sou- biroiu uses- her knowledge and .concern in other or- ganizations. She serves on the National League for Nunsiri'g,Public Health Research Committee. Shealso demonstrates her world-wide vision by serving as Presi- dent of the World ,Fellowship Guild of her church, which .promotes missions. Miss Soubirou's ministry exteildsl around the world, with 'graduates of her pro- gram serving in 68. countries under 70 mission boards.
